The fastest eight ever - Germany (

This video is a great example of the German rowing technique. The light shallow catch (not locking in) and relatively short drive create a "tapping along" type of power application, very similar to the 1996 Dutch eight. The coach of this boat was Uwe Bender.
This specific rhythm is not disturbed by some small non-uniformity in the body work.

For all those wondering about the lack of uniformity in the bodies--it's the result of a different philosophy to coaching and rowing. Instead of worrying about looking the same to the coaches eye, or trying to replicate exactly the man in front, the athletes learn to understand for themselves the feel and sensations of what makes a boat go fast by spending time in pairs. Then they arrive independently at the result, but the difference is they don't waste time trying to be copycats. They learn how to use their bodies to efficiently lever the boat instead of dictating to the boat its speed. If you look at the bladework and rythm, the boat moves very well, and the puddles clear the stern. even the individual discrepancies of bladework can be assigned to position, bow moves quicker around the front end because that's what the bow needs and stroke seat lets it run out a bit more.

Fascinating. 2 seat and stroke seat rowing completely different lengths. When they were up at race pace the blade work was outstanding with lightning catches

The art of coaching is to know when to stop pushing the athletes for cosmetic uniformity and when to focus on rhythm and uniformed power application only. There are many examples of very fast boats which did not look good and uniformed.

Yes, I agree with your comments. This lack of uniformed body work is a result of spending a lot of time on the pairs versus us who spend majority time in the big boats. The second reason is that some coaches pay more attention to the blade work, general rhythm and the speed of the boat than uniformity of the guys.

It's very noticeable, particularly between 4-7 seat. Also, I would love to get your perspective on relaxing the inside arm/ shoulder for rowing, as this crew all seem to straighten both arms.

This is really interesting to see. I've only seen this crew at pace, and they look totally different on the paddle. Obviously they are one of the fastest crews of all time, but they look almost like a collegiate 2V or even 3V. 4 is opening his body super early, port side catch timing is all over the place, 5 is dropping his body into the catch and skying his blade a bit, and everyone is moving their hands out of bow differently haha. But once they get their blades in the water they seem to move the boat so well. Very interesting.

They look certainly much better than any college's 2 or 3v. Regardless they are human beings. Olympic silver medalists and world's best time holders are capable of imperfection

with respect to some of the comments if you're big guys in a big eight you're probably not too focused on perfect technique but rather getting the blade in and applying the power....it's not like they're out in singles...

With respect to your comment this isn’t the first crew to have serious power. I don’t think the comments are trying to take away from the crew’s achievements, more surprised that their paddling is disjointed for what you would expect of a WBT eight
