Thanks Lee for all your advice. I bought one of these and 2 months later, made 7 cuttings. I tried lecca and water propagation with the works: heat mats, lights, etc. Only 2 that I just stuck in soil and put outdoors survived.😅 But now, as we enter into autumn, those propagations, as well as the mother plant, have given me 3 offshoots each 😊. They've started to come inside at night. In a couple of weeks, they'll be at my window sill. I hope I can get them through the winter. I'm looking forward to more advice from you on that.❤

Can I be your friend??? 😂 Man I need this plant, it's gorgeous. I really do appreciate your talking about not shaming people for their ignorance, 🥰 everyone can't be an expert at everything. I'm a florist ffs, but I have no clue about Monsteras except I've loved them from afar. I have finally decided to take the plunge and have no problem admitting my ignorance, but don't need anyone trying to make me feel stupid.

I appreciate your channel. I'm broadening my houseplant horizons after keeping a Thanksgiving cactus alive for about 6 years and recently acquired one of these delightful plants, but am paranoid about killing it. My previous plant parenting practice has been barely benign neglect and I vacillate between hovering nervously over this thing and ignoring it until it seems to be crying out for attention. I find your relaxed approach comforting.

I've said it once I'll say it again.... you are in my top 2 plant sinsei 👌 sure I like a handful of the youtubers who give there time and energy to shine a public light on there ideas a d opinions... however alot r either kinda boring and hard to listen to😅 Or it feels like they are trying to actually show off there knowledge not in a teaching capacity but as an over confident ," look at me everyone" , like they just do it cus it gives them a chance to get praise or whatever ... BTW half the time they don't explain the important details. ~ however , I'll admit my №1 sensei is Amanda (planterina) ... you and her have different styles but it carries the same heart felt/sincere vibes of spreading knowledge /guidance through honesty and humility . That is what makes you 2 diff. You both seem to be comfortable w/ your own strengths and your short comings... wich is why you both seem to reach further for me ! I knowni don't gotta request this but keep being you and doing how you do 🙏.

I really like the Rhaphidophora Decursiva. Totally underrated plant. I found mine in the back corner of a local nursery for $14. It's kinda similar to a Deliciousa, but it's so much neater in its growth pattern. It grows horizontal along the dirt, until you give it something to grow on and then it shoots straight up. And the leaves mature FAST. Also it's called a Dragon Tail which is cool.

Great video! I did have a question about changing the prop water. I heard probably from some random KZbinr that when you change out the water too frequently it prevents the rooting of hormones that occur naturally in the plant from building up and it impedes route hormone. Any thoughts on this
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant 2 жыл бұрын
True. The water will have some hormones that will help the plant establish faster. In my experience the differences between changing the water and not is not large enough to exclusively choose one or the other. If your cutting is struggling with rot, changing the water maybe helpful. If not feel free to keep the same water and refill as needed.

If i started a pot with only one stem cutting of a mini monstera, can I later add more cuttings into the same or will it be detrimental to the original growing single cutting that was already on the pot (I want a more jungly look, but already started my pot with one cutting)
@TraciBunkers
@TraciBunkers Жыл бұрын
I'm curious how your water propagation with these turned out. A friend and I both have had zero luck--they just rot. We've also tried propagating them in moss, leca, stratum/perlite combo . . . . . and they still rot. What's the secret? We've had success with propagating other things. Thanks!
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant Жыл бұрын
That's odd. I usually get 90% success rate with these in water. They do respond well to air layering. Maybe some of these strategies will help stop rot. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b56ufWmXj9xgnrM

P.s. 😅 quick question... * I had to repot my mini monstera last night (10/28/22) I noticed the soil is usually wet since I brought it home 2 months ago..only watered 3 times since but it's been just booming new growth out lately ... even so I decided I should not risk r.rot .. thing is the only soil I had was moisture control from miracle gro ... Then I read that wasn't best choice for it and when I watched this video u explained soil and it's contents. What I'm wondering is a I'll my "Rhaphy" be ok or should I yet change ot again?

Rescued mine from Lowe’s clearance…. She can be a picky bitch if I can be honest. Frustrating. She didn’t seem to like soil after awhile, so I moved her to a nice jar of water. She did great!! Lil bebe leaves, got tall… For 8ish months. NOW she is turning yellow?! Like over a week I lost 3 leaves!! Wha?! 3:41 shit, I’ve been pronouncing it Monstera “Jenny”- and even named her j-lo… so “mispronunciation” is a day to day dealio for me!!! LOL! I 100% agree!!! Keep your corrections to ya self!!!

I cut two of my branches and put them in water and they rotted. How do people on KZbin make it look so easy? I also found a millipede crawling on the yummy aroid mix, so out the door that went. I will repot in a few days when I get my new batch of Aroid mix or maybe I will put it back in PON where it was in growing heaven.

@@KillThisPlant Sorry There were two leaves on each section. I had the same problem after the vendor was kind enough to send a bunch of free cuttings. The lighting is indirect bright light.

I’m hesitant to speak up about this, but several days after watching this video it’s still nagging at me. You seem like a genuinely nice person, and I don’t think you meant to be unkind to anyone. However, not everyone who waxes on about the correct Latin names of plants is doing so in order to show that “they’re smart.” Many may simply wish to share information that they themselves have enjoyed learning. They assume others will have that same enthusiasm. *For some, the reason behind this (to some, obnoxious) level of precision is much more profound: One of the hallmarks of autism is obsessive special interests, taking what might be a ‘hobby’ for most people to an intense level of learning everything possible about it, and talking about it in such detail and at such length that the people around them become bored.* Since someone with autism typically struggles with understanding social cues, they often don’t know when they have gone too far, or have come across as rude. And, no… *you* can’t tell whether someone is autistic or not. Many autistic people are very adept at masking overt signs of their autism while they’re in public, though much struggle may be going on internally. So if someone exhibits behavior that comes across as ‘off’, or inappropriate, please don’t rush to judgement; there may be something beyond their control going on that you don’t know about. We should all give each other a break and not judge so harshly. Your tone sounded contemptuous, and that was unnecessary.
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for speaking up. As someone who often info dumps about my own special interests, plants and otherwise, I do appreciate the sharing of "correct" information. I must not have done a good job explaining what I'm actually seeing. If you'd like to hear more let me know. I don't know if it'll be enough to convince you my tone was anything other than mild frustration, or if it'll convince you I'm aware of the differences of communication of people on the spectrum. But I'll figure I'd put it out there.

@@KillThisPlant I really appreciate appreciate you responding. I *do* think you’re genuinely nice and didn’t mean for it to come across the way I -and possibly some others- heard it. As I suggested, I’m not very good at reading social cues and can take things the wrong way sometimes. Given the current atmosphere online, I can only imagine the types of aggressive, critical comments you may be seeing. If you wish to share, I’m open, but it really isn’t necessary. If you weren’t aware why some people (specifically, those with autism) may be coming across as arrogant know-it-alls, I simply wanted to inform. Then again, some people ARE arrogant know-it-alls, and I’ll bet you have to deal with far too many of them! Again, thanks for ‘listening’ and responding so thoughtfully. And thank you for the many informative videos that have helped me with my own (obsessive 😉) special interest. The deep dive is half the fun!

@@altitudeiseverything3163 Thanks for the openness and honesty. One frustration I have is when a relatively simple question is asked. For example, "Do I cut here or here to propagate my mini monstera?" -Some users, who I already know can answer the question (because I've seen them respond to more complex posts in the past) some even owning a Rhaphidaphora, they will just correct the user on the name, telling them they're in the wrong place, but not answer the original question. Yes aim for accuracy and clarity, but when you know the answer, and educating is as simple correcting the name AND as saying "yes/no" or "cut at the blue line". This is just withholding information. To make things worse the Rhapidaphora reddit is 3% the size of the Monstera reddit. So they are, in a sense, sending someone off to probably not have their question answered at all.
