I know UGreen stated that you can't just connect the TB4 port to a computer and use it like an external drive when in that configuration. It would be super convenient on this flash model where it's more portable than the 4/6/8 bay units. Have you guys tested this? If you can't just connect it straight into a computer, I'm hoping UGreen realizes the potential of this use case and releases an update in the future so users can connect their PC's into the TB4 port if they want.

You can likely use it as thunderbolt networking to get roughly 20-32gbps

UGreen is shaking up the NAS market with their offerings or at least they are at the Kickstarter pricing.
@StorageReview7 ай бұрын
even at MSRP they're priced well on a hardware spec basis. Software depth is the next big challenge, so it really depends on what you need.
@jodajackson44896 ай бұрын
@@StorageReview Agreed, although it’s difficult to even find something on an equivalent hardware level from Synology. Typically they go with Xeon, Celeron, Atom, Realtek, Marvel or an AMD Ryzen V / R. QNAP does a better job with the hardware IMO.

@@jodajackson4489 You're entirely correct. Both however still have a much stronger software ecosystem so it's going to come down to what you want today and if you can be patient with UGREEN on apps.

You want a JBOD on this tiny system? Probably better to ask them for more M.2 bays or a system with enterprise form factors that have much higher capacities.

Yes, considering M.2 storage is still so small. Doesn’t Thunderbolt have the ability to daisy chain? A Thunderbolt JBOD would be awesome, with this as the head.

Cudos to UGREEN for putting a massive heatsink and 2 dedicated fans for the NVMEs. Do you see ASUSTORE ? It can be done. The ASUSTORE 12 bay flash nas is just a giant oven when its fully loaded , especially the lower bay has no cooling and it overheats. I think ASUS designed it with m.2 Sata drives in mind but those are pretty much end of development. Nobody bothers with them because they cant compete with NVME. I dont know how are things on your market but here finding anything bigger then 1TB is impossible. If you want bigger - you need NVME which is more expensive and hot.
@StorageReview7 ай бұрын
We don't even cover ASUSTOR.
@Oyashiro_Chama7 ай бұрын
To be fair, the asustor won't even reach 1/8th the transfer rate to cause significant heat generation. If it overheats, you probably have more issues with your ambient temperatures

No ECC = NOGO....especially with flash where long-term storage is more volatile. Yet another product catering to the lowest common denominator. Sad.
@StorageReview7 ай бұрын
You can pay for that in an enterprise NAS if you like. This isn't enterprise.
@URackADisciprine7 ай бұрын
@@StorageReview What a terrible answer from a supposed channel about data storage. No, you do not need to go enterprise to get ECC. Also don't need to pay a fortune in today's market even if you did go enterprise unless you are buying the absolute latest and greatest.
@StorageReview7 ай бұрын
@@URackADisciprine Point being, this hardware costs less than the comparable drive bay counts from Synology for instance. As to ECC you really don't see that in a packaged NAS solution sub $1K. Happy to be wrong here if you want to share an example. Typically we see ECC show up in more enterprise solutions, typically defined at the rack NAS level.

@@URackADisciprine chill foo, ECC is way too overrated. Like they said, this isn't enterprise. It's great for home use. You want ECC just to say you have it? Go buy something else. ECC Ram was crucial for servers back in the day. But in 2024 with good RAM like from Samsung or equivalent, it's totally unnecessary for low-end hardware like this. Yup and HP Proliant running mission critical business apps. It's worth paying the extra and having peace of mind. But I can comfortably say I've not seen bitrot due to non ECC for many many years.
