I really don't see why this is the main topic in the comment section of every single phawx video

Appreciate the power consumption figures near the end of the video. More NAS videos definitely need this since NASs are intended for 24/7 use and electricity ain't cheap these days.

My home NAS is an OrangePi 5 plus with a 4TB SSD. Consumes around 2-3W in idle, and 3-5W under load. Very relevant at 0.45€/kWh energy cost. These dedicated NAS systems seem like a luxury item but maybe I'm just poor haha.

What is the idle power with no drive connected, or when all the drives at idle?

There are still low power D series Xeons which would have been nice for ECC support but the i5-1235U has more PCIE lanes and it looks like they are using all of them. If I wasn't a DIYer when it comes to my NAS I'd have gotten one of these, pretty solid hardware for the money minus the cooling, hopefully they come out with a V2 that addresses those issues though I know some people have replaced the stock fans with Noctuas.

Thanks for the review - I'm looking for a large capacity low power storage solution for my home. Thinking about buying a NAS with 12 bays & a slot to connect an external SAS card and enough CPU & Memory to run backup software. I want to run backups & archive data to an external SAS LTO-9 Tape (18TB native per tape) as there is a ton of capacity I want to keep but don't necessarily need it online 24x7 so building a near line solution will give me the extra capacity at a low cost, reasonable restore times, security of local & offsite backups and 24 x 18TB Tapes sitting in a cupboard don't need electricity...

This class of NAS has improved so much over the last decade, compared to the arm powered units or similar. I still prefer my home built NAS, but the density and simplicity of these solutions is unbeatable. Do you know if you can run unraid on it?

Any advice to accessing ugreen's shared folder through the guest OS that was created? The guest OS doesn't seems to be able to view any shared network resource.

A big question for me that no one seems to cover is if the drives are hot swappable or if various size drives can be used (to start with at least). I'd love to use drives from a drobo and upgrade them closer to your setup as budget allows.

Yeah the Synology Hybrid Raid is a really nice feature and I want to upgrade from a 4 bay device to 8 bays that I can slowly fill a bay at a time as I need it. In my case I might just be stuck with Synology for now.
@nadtz3 ай бұрын
Not with the Ugreen software but you could put something like Unraid on it which would do that. Not sure if it would work with drives from a drobo unit though.

Ugreen might just have saved me from joining the cult of Synology. But it sounds like I'll have to get a doctorate on Windows servers to use this though

Where did you get 8 20TB drives for $1700? Are they refurbished?

From Server Parts Deals. Yes they are refurbished and SPD has their own warranty for them.

I would say do NOT use this for production until such time that we know their OS is suitable, regularly updated and secure. Unless you're going to install a 3rd party OS on it.

Jesus christ these are expensive. I just need a case for a bunch of drives that I can plug into my own pc. I have a Dell i5 8500 I got for 30 bucks at an auction site and that will do plex fine. This looked great but they put an entire pc in there which I guess just isn't my use case.
