Little note for people, advice I picked up from watching Etho. Placing rails on ice doesn't effect the speed of boats while also spawn proofing, so if you feel like you may ever want to move mobs via rail through the nether, planning ahead when building your roads would save you that effort later at the cost of using more materials. Might not be worth doing if you change worlds often, but if you plan on playing one world for several years, it'll probably come up eventually.

Question: In theory, wouldn't you only need to spawn proof the parts of the ice road that are within your simulation distance at the start & finish of the ice road, and not the entire length of it? I would think that, once you hit full speed, you would be moving faster than the game could generate mobs on the path.
@Pixlriffs3 ай бұрын
You're moving at 72 blocks per second, but the game makes a spawning attempt every game tick (1/20th of a second) and spawns mobs within 128 blocks of the player regardless of simulation distance (on Java, simulation distance only affects whether or not the mob's AI is active, not whether they spawn at all.)

@@JoelRipke I’m not certain, but since carpet does have a collision box, it might change the friction the boat has on the ice. Even if it doesn’t, it’s about how the materials break down. Hey Pix! I can't wait to see the projects you have in mind for such a lovey location! Why did you not make this highway on the roof? It would require fewer resources seeing as though the roof itself is spawn proof. Is it because you feel it will be inevitable that Mojang will nerf the ability to get to the nether roof, thus future-proofing your content?
@Pixlriffs3 ай бұрын
I prefer to do stuff inside the Nether cavern unless it's mechanically necessary - like a gold farm, which I guess isn't strictly necessary, but the alternative is spending hours removing or spawnproofing the surrounding terrain. The bedrock of the nether roof is spawnproof but any material you take up there is not, so spawnproofing would still be required (and I'd need to build walls either side of the track to keep the boat from sliding off.)

@THE_bchat3 ай бұрын
Because he is teaching people about the game, not showing-off his knowledge & skills.
@Pixlriffs3 ай бұрын
Here's a few reasons: Mechanics like these work perfectly fine without the nether roof, so there's really no need to go there - unlike projects like a gold farm where you're sparing yourself a lot of time and effort spawnproofing terrain inside the nether cavern. Despite this being a Java guide, I like to keep it inclusive where possible, and the nether roof isn't available to build on for Bedrock Edition players. It's harder to connect portals accurately up there because the lowest possible Y coordinate is 128, so overworld portals have to be built higher if you want them close together. Spawnproofing has to be much more accurate because you don't want ghasts or other mobs spawning. You also can't rely on natural terrain to guide the boat so a lot of extra building is required. And, honestly, the nether roof feels like a boring and sterile environment unless you want to do a ton of building there.

The point of these tutorials is to appeal to new players, or people who skipped the videos explaining these mechanics in previous series. I figure anyone who’s watching beyond one season is here to see the long-term progress of this world, and would be more interested in stuff like the start of this video where I introduce areas for new build projects. But this really can’t be a tutorial series if I do stuff like this off camera and never explain it.
