Was thinking the same. Just googled it, apparently that's how much it costed back in 1964 when they made it, so adjusted for inflation it's about $315mil in today's money so makes sense..

If you can build a Spitfire, with self sealing tanks, surely you can build fuel tanks for the SR-71 that do not leak. Teflon lined bladders for example.

The issue is more complicated. At above supersonic the friction heats the metal up and it expands - thereby sealing the leaky bits - but in actual fact the leaks were measured in drips per minute - no biggy - and on takeoff the tanks were almost empty which is why they had to refuel almost immediately after takeoff

4:26???? Not so!, the inside air temp. never even got close to 120 celsius which is well above boiling, inside air temp. would always be kept at around 70 degrees F. which was more than tolerable.

The SR-71, while one of the best aircraft ever made, is not actually the fastest. The X-15 was the fastest with a top speed double that of the 71. It was more rocket based and was more of a rocket with wings on it but it is the fastest aircraft produced to this day

Actually SR71 is slower that the X15 and it goes mach 6.3 but that’s not even close to the fastest thing in the earth a F16 eject tester that can go mach 8.6 or 8.7 it uses rocket engines so that basically counts also it has a very fast deceleration about a few seconds.

Ok so here is the main reason why the title of the fastest jet PLANE goes to the SR-71.. the X-15 was powered by a rocket engine that would ignite and burn, providing thrust for the first 80 to 120 seconds of flight, pushing the aircraft to speed of mach 6.7 (over 6 times the speed of sound), and after that, the rocket would shut off, and the aircraft would just glide until it landed. This made X-15 flight pretty short, only being about 10 minutes. The SR-71 on the other hand, could provide itself with constant thrust as is used a type of jet engine (turbojet, to be exact), and land on its own power. So, think bout the facts here, rocket vs traditional jet engine. So, to answer your question, the SR-71 has the title because it is technically a (traditional style) PLANE, with traditional wings and jet engines, while the X-15 is more of an "aircraft" because of its use of that rocket engine, and short, stubby wings due to the speed it flew at.
