@@facundobritosgonzalez621 what worked for me was to first immerse in the language, to kind of get a feeling for it, so I listened to german songs and watched tv shows with subtitles in my native language. It was hard though because idk for some reason i find a lot of German media to be kinda boring but maybe with you it’s different :) after that I just took normal classes. Also when I read in german I do try to translate every little word i dont know, idk when I learned english and french i didnt need to translate every word in a sentence to understand it but with German i really feel like i dont fully understand whats being said unless i know every word and thats also been helping me expand my vocabulary so there is that 🤷🏽‍♀️

ESL teacher and a multilingual here. My advice to my students is always to incorporate the language you want to study on things you like. The absolute best thing is watching movies in that language WITH SUBTITLES ALSO IN THAT LANGUAGE. When you watch something while reading subs, you'll automatically read in harmony with the speaker. This will improve your reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Yes, at first it'll be extremely frustrating since you'd have to pause and translate often. But there's no shortcut to increasing vocabulary. But trust me it's so much easier today since you can translate on your phone. Back then i had to get up and look at physical dictionary and dictionaries don't have a section for expressions or informal words. This method is tough, but you'll improve dramatically fast! AND you'll be doing something you like anyways to reduce the frustration.

Linguistics major here - he is definitely not wrong. The most important part of fluency is practice and exposure. By forcing yourself into a target language environment you will inevitably pick up on stuff (start with small things like changing your phone settings to your target language). And by speaking (doesn't matter how bad your grammar is, just mumble to yourself during the day) you will accustom yourself to forming phrases and in no time you'll feel the language as the flexible living fluid that it is. Edit because so many people seem to misunderstand what I meant: I'm mot talking about learning a language, I'm talking about the ways of achieving _fluency_ while speaking and understanding it.

Hello I am interested in possibly being a linguistics major and researcher. Do you have any recommendations for things I should do in my senior high school year?
@s_lasgalen
@s_lasgalen Жыл бұрын
@@bingbonghafu Hey! This possibly depends on where you are from because schools in different countries have different possibilities and programs. In my school I had to choose a few subjects that I would study on an advanced level (I went with history, English and social studies) so if your school gives you a choice, focus on the subjects that will matter in the future. We also had an obligatory research project and I did mine on the topic of Greek and Latin roots in indo-european languages, so having some research experience with languages was very helpful for me. Don't stress yourself over learning too many languages at once, if you want to be a polyglot, you'll have time for that in college. If you are studying a foreign language, having one is enough (if you're *not* from an English speaking country, like I am, practice your English to the max). Also I'd recommend you to research universities with linguistics programms as much as possible because some of them have special requirements which you will need to be prepared for. Hope this helps.)

@@Kai92 I went to school in Switzerland. It's mandatory to learn a second language of the country here (+english) so all the german speaking people learn french and all the french speaking people learn german. Yeah. But almost no-one from the french speaking country can speak German after at least 7 years of learning it in school and vis versa. Most people who graduate from Gymnasium can't even speak it. Instead, if we come across someone from another part of Switzerland we're just gonna speak English with them because that's what everyone speaks and understands due to it being universal and parents being way more likely to finance a trip to England for a few weeks to learn it because it's so important.

40 minutes is a fricking lot, if it's strictly every day with no exceptions. That's almost 5 hours a week. And doing the speaking or writing part can be tricky on some days.
@brohvakiindova4452
@brohvakiindova4452 Жыл бұрын
@realauthority202 No you don't have to do 40 minutes every day. The most important part is the consistency, you can also pick 3 days a week and do 1 hour each. Also different people learn on different speeds and as you said depending on the similarity to your native language it can be super hard or super easy. What I think works really nice is having some passive inputs once you have a good foundation. English is of course everywhere so people are constantly reminded etc. but with other languages you can just have certain media you consume set to the language and don't explicitly use it as studying but just to keep your brain invested in it. Randomly using a language in day to day life is a hugely powerful tool that doesn't make it a huge chore / investment to learn a language. Also nobody pressures you to be fluent in 2 years, maybe you need 5. Maybe you love doing it and are there in 1 year etc.

I know enough basics to do my job but I can't fully express myself in this language and it's so frustrating. I know the alphabet, I can read greek and speak it as I read it but I don't know what it says!! I just can't memorise the words. It is so embarrassing, and so disheartening. I'm not a stupid person but the grammar is so confusing and try as I might I just can't wrap my head around it. It's like every word has 10 different variations depending on the context and I can't memorise all these different rules and apply it.

When I was 1.5 years old to 10 years old, my parents made me listen to english songs everyday after school until dinner time 😂 I helps a lot with accent, new vocab, listening skills, and grammar. Just make sure you listen to a credible songs 😅 For writing I learn by writing short stories about my stuffed animals doing human activity 😂

I don’t think that it’s ever possible to reach a native-speaker level as a learner. That doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to speak ‘more correctly’ than some native speakers, but according to many linguists, like Chomsky, there are some things that only a native can do.

I speak English natively, I’ve been doing Spanish through the school system for 4 years, self taught Greek for about a year (forgotten most now 😭) and am currently learning Italian both online and self teaching. I found that I learnt Italian a lot easier and faster than Spanish. And that’s because I was able to immerse myself in the language. Reading Italian books and magazines, watching Italian films, talking to Italian people, IN ITALIAN. You don’t get that in a class room where it’s just translation after translation with the odd listening task.
