The downfall of the Comanche began with the introduction of the revolver back in the 1840's. Captain John “Jack” Coffee Hays, by himself and armed only with a single shot rifled musket and two revolvers took on a small war party of Comanche at Enchanted Rock just north of Fredericksburg Texas. The Comanche had a tactic where they'd sacrafice 3 warriors to get you to shot your 1 musket and two pistol shots, then they'd swarm you. This Texas Ranger captain used that to his advantage, he fired 3 shots, the Comanche then charged him and he unleashed 10 more shots at them. It stunned them so badly they hunkered down waiting to get him in the dark of night. This allowed him to escape up and over Enchanted Rock. Several Comanche died that day with the Texas Rangers taking no loses.

They went from swinging at people with swords to putting more kinetic energy into a tipped wooden shaft fired half a demesne away.

And they gave us the middle finger as an insult. French archers would show British soldiers their middle finger, the one they use to draw a bow, as a way of saying "I'm going to kill you." As a LotR fan, I gotta let out my own "tism". Elves can draw their bows back and hold them because they're stronger than men and their bows are "magical" in the sense that they're made from Elvish hair and are very easy to draw without compromising their strength (same way they can have light armor that's incredibly durable). Rohan's bows are nowhere near as good as the elves', but if I recall correctly, their bows are made from only the finest horse hair, which Rohan's are EXTREMELY good, and they'd still have some Numenorean technology floating around. LotR's war technology while on the surface is comparable to IRL medieval tech, in actuality it's much greater due to Tolkien's themes of everything being "lesser" than over time. With that said, it's still "rule of cool" for the movie, but there is some basis in the books for certain bows, swords, armor, and what not being far greater than their IRL counterparts due to our own primitive technology being "lesser" than that of LotR's.

1:15:43 There's a story of something similar-ish in India with the British Empire. When a wealthy man died, his wife/wives were expected to throw themselves on his funeral pyre. If they refused, the crowd would do the throwing. When the Brits said that was no longer allowed, local leaders argued it was their culture. So the Brit commander informed them that part of his culture was to execute anyone who did such a thing. He went on to say, "so you build your pyre, and my men will construct a gallows. 1:23:39 Just a note on that fresh water thing; the journey of Lewis and Clark is pretty significant in MT and just since then we’ve had marshes develop in areas that, according to their journals, were dangerous because of how dry the area was. The opposite has also happened where there was once a large pond that’s now a silt flat. So with how fast the environment can change in a very inland area you’d have to do some in depth soil sampling across entire regions to get an accurate picture of water tables through history.

Here's the thing about the sword discovered in the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor (Qin Shi Huang): there were originally far more swords because the terracotta army soldiers all had real swords (for realism) that were stolen by graverobbers. The sword (and other weaponry such as arrowheads) discussed here was indeed in pristine condition and still sharp, but it was not due to metallurgy. A 2019 paper showed that a thin layer (10-15 microns thick) of protective chromium dioxide covered the weapons and played a protective role for over 2200 years, and that this was not an intentional process but rather due to contamination from nearby lacquered items; moreover research has suggested that the slightly alkaline pH and small particle size of the tomb site's soil played the primary role in weapon preservation.

36:16 Funnily enough, this sort of happens in The Walking Dead, both the show and the comic book. Mainly at the end of the comic, someone actually has to pay a fine for killing a walker because at the end of the apocalypse a character has a roaming circus to show off the zombies, because at the end of the series there’s people who’ve never seen a walker before. Basically someone had to pay a fine for destroying someone else’s ‘property’

I’m a competitive horse archer and it’s such a specific skill set and is very tedious to learn in a lot of ways. Spent two years training my horse to be able to do everything on his end (speed changes, turns etc) based strictly on my voice and body language so I never have to touch the reins, then I separately taught myself instinct shooting in archery and got the muscle memory down to the point that I broke a world record for speed. Still hold that record. Then I spent a few weeks getting my horse introduced to and comfortable around the equipment and the sounds, and after that I was finally able to start shooting from horseback. By then you have to be able to read your horse’s movements to keep your arms steady, be aware enough of your own body language to know what you’re signaling to your horse and accurate enough with your arrows to hit the target. It’s a ton of fun and it’s not horribly difficult to do, but it takes countless hours of repetitions to be able to build up the individual pieces to it and piece it all together. Your horse is your battle buddy, so the trust you build and have to have in your horse is incredible. Super super therapeutic to go out and be able to be on the exact same wavelength as this massive beast without ever even having to say a word.

Yeah I can imagine it takes a truck load of training. And even your obviously crazy amount(at least to me) of investment to learning this is nothing compared to those like the Mongols. Horse riding, and horse archery was(is?) their way of life. Children living under Genghis Khan learned to ride in much the same way they do today, starting between 3 and 5 years old and entering their first races between 6 and 12. And since horses were the main mode of transport, they would effectively spend most of their life on a horse. “To appreciate the Mongol you must see him on horseback,” author Elizabeth Kendall wrote in 1911, “and indeed you rarely see him otherwise, for he does not put foot to the ground if he can help it. The Mongol without his pony is only half a Mongol, but with his pony, he is as good as two men.”

Right so one thing I really love to talk about is how the King Tiger, on top of it's already mountain of problems, had it's turret reverse tied to the engine rpm rather than it's own motor so in order for a king tiger to turn it's turret at any decent speed it would have to rev it's engine hard and basically announce it's position to anyone in a 1-5 mile radius depending on environment.

If you're doing a "wind-up" with a bow, the bow is too heavy for you. I saw this with my buddies who are gym rats. They could not handle my 55# recurve bow; they were shaking, and doing that shit where they "wind-up," and the reason you don't do that is it's wildly unsafe. I have a 3" overdraw (31" draw) due to being 6'4", so for me, that 55# is actually more like 61#, as the 55# is at 28" (standard draw length). I used to shoot 3 times a week in 4 hour sessions, sending on average 400 shots downrange. Imagine doing 400 reps of 61 pounds 3 times a week. Dude, I didn't look jacked, because the muscles used are all in your back and shoulder, not your arms. My girlfriend back then said my back and shoulder felt like steel cables, which turned her on, if I might say. If you're serious about archery, start with a 15# bow, and get your form squared away. Form and consistency is like 99% of archery. If your form is shit, you will never become good, and you will likely hurt yourself and/or someone near you. Once you have your form on lockdown, then start easing into heavier bows. Bump up from 15# to 30#, and do that for a month or two. Then 45#. Then 55#. Go in 10 pound increments, and shoot at least twice a week for at least 2 hours straight each session. If you're feeling good about it, bump it up to 3 times a week, and 3 hours, then 4 hours. By this time, you should be pretty fit, and your form true. I can hold my bow drawn and steady for about 1 minute before tiring. My gym rat buddies couldn't even manage 5 seconds. You should also start off shooting at 5-10 yards. It looks ridiculous, but it works. Once you have consistent groups, arrows touching arrows in the bullseye, move it back to 25-30 yards. Once you're getting good groups there, move back to 50 yards. Then 75 yards. Past 75 yards is really difficult, and you'll want to start using more powerful bows, like 65# to 75#, if you can manage. Heaviest i did was a 120 pound war bow a range buddy hand-crafted. Beautiful bow, but it made me its bitch. I did manage a 90 yard bullseye with it, but I was winded using that thing. Too much too soon. I could hold it steady for about 4 seconds, and that's it. The crazy thing is, old-school war bows could go as high as 180#, though if I recall, around 140#-150# was more common, but the crazy heavy ones did exist. I remember watching a documentary where a guy used a 120# longbow from a castle rampart, and nailed a dummy simulating a mounted knight... at 500 yards. The arrow not only defeated the plate, allegedly made to spec of armor of the time, but it went through the hay bale inside it, and proceeded to defeat the rear plate, extending out the back by nearly a foot. i can believe it, because I've seen a 200# compound crossbow on Demolition Ranch go several inches through modern body armor, I think level 2. I also have a 200# crossbow, and that thing will go through a tightly packed 2 foot thick hay bale, and keep going until it hits the 75 yard berm. The bolts will melt foam targets from the friction generated. It's insane, and that's just a 395gn bolt. I can't even imagine the sheer power of a 180# war bow sending a >600gn arrow down range.
