You cannot be totally free while as a human, you can however chose where the little freedom you have is applied, yet while under a modern society the institutions that regulate social behavior (not so much the economical structure) are so big you really have no choice as you can't live outside system if there is nothing outside of the system.

Freedom is very often an empty buzzword that, like many other buzzwords from all over the political spectrum, is used to justify the status quo or justify atrocities in the pursuit of them.

Maybe freedom is the responsibility of learning our roots and living in accordance with nature? I know this question is much much more nuanced and complicated just an idea.

A professor I once had this to say about the reality vs. perception around Davis. He said when he was a student he went to a Communist Party of America rally to see her, and the only 5 people in the audience were him, his buddies, and the two FBI guys in the back. Leonard, I hope you're doing well, you taught me a lot.

Fun fact: A mural of a Angela Davis quote was covered up at my local high school the day before spring break because she supported Palestine and a pro-Israeli group were angry (I think that's why). The students held a sit-in and everyone went home early.

Personally, I saw this video to be very informative and educational, with little bias. I was not aware of Angela Davis in specific terms until this video, so thank you. Whatever the opinion of the people is, it is still important to acknowledge what we know about all kinds of philosophers and their school of thought in order to understand the world we live in today.

Even if there is a leaning to what's covered in general, the ideas that are covered aren't pushed in a way to be seen as positive. It shows their ideas and leaves it to you to decide if there was any good in their philosophy. I don't agree with a lot of ideas discussed in these videos but thinking about them and how they coincide with your own moral compass is a healthy exercise.

Violence may help within the region affected by oppression, but will be used as a tool to discredit the would-be victims and thus prevent the opressed from receiving help. Therefore, it is important to only use violence when the world remains silent. Even so, it's hard to know how long you should really hold your breath for a world which may not care or know at all.
@AlbornozVEVO

@@somkeshav4143 1. "Because it always happens" is a fallacious argument. There have always been pedophiles, doesn't make it morally acceptable in of itself. 2. You are factually incorrect here. It has brought varying levels of change multiple times throughout history. Gandhi and his movements and the Civil Rights movements are easy examples of this. If you mean that they don't completely erase inequality most of the time, then yes you are correct, but neither do violent ones. Take the French revolution, which ended up with many reforms being reversed as soon as Napoleon declared himself Consul and then Emperor before he was kicked out and a new Monarchy put into place.

@@aiden-sy3ex yea Marxism is literally a methodology of socioeconomic analysis that examines and criticizes whatever flaws there might be in a system, no matter if it’s socialist, capitalist, whatever. The mainstream progressive left-wing position in the 1960s was that you supported civil rights, Johnson and Kennedy's efforts to "contain" communism, and the Vietnam War but were critical of the military's "conduct" of the war. Actually opposing the war effort itself was seen as dangerous radicalism and could get you fired from your job. Many people who opposed the war also believed that the changes necessary for black people to have civil rights and protection from violent racists were not happening quickly enough. Being a feminist was also very unpopular in the 1960s. Siding with the Soviet Union and the Peoples' Temple were both completely indefensible positions, but it's understandable why she sided with them given her own background and how marginal her views were at the time.

Seems like the Jim Jones critique may not be warranted. Prior to the mass suicide, JJ was an activist who did a lot for the black community. Seems like the exact person a black communist might get along with.

@@FunkadelicPancho Lenin turned in to a bourgeois dictator, and I don't believe that Stalin was ever really anything more than a domineering thug. But socialism isn't really about creating a totalitarian atate, it's about people having control over their workplace.

@@1337w0n Socialism and Communism create a power vacuum that makes tyrants easily get to power. I think that's the problem with the ideology, if it was a perfect world, communism and socialism would be a utopia.

@@SGR403 MLK advocated for peaceful but constant protest in which the violence of the opposing side against the peaceful protestors was the message, displaying the violence as entirely unacceptable given the protestor’s actions. During BLM organizers tried the same thing, but national media and video causes the few riot cases to overwhelm the majority peaceful protests.
