Violence may help within the region affected by oppression, but will be used as a tool to discredit the would-be victims and thus prevent the opressed from receiving help. Therefore, it is important to only use violence when the world remains silent. Even so, it's hard to know how long you should really hold your breath for a world which may not care or know at all.

It has brought varying levels of change multiple times throughout history. Gandhi and his movements and the Civil Rights movements are easy examples of this. If you mean that they don't completely erase inequality most of the time, then yes you are correct, but neither do violent ones. Take the French revolution, which ended up with many reforms being reversed as soon as Napoleon declared himself Consul and then Emperor before he was kicked out and a new Monarchy put into place.

The mainstream progressive left-wing position in the 1960s was that you supported civil rights, Johnson and Kennedy's efforts to "contain" communism, and the Vietnam War but were critical of the military's "conduct" of the war. Actually opposing the war effort itself was seen as dangerous radicalism and could get you fired from your job. Many people who opposed the war also believed that the changes necessary for black people to have civil rights and protection from violent racists were not happening quickly enough. Being a feminist was also very unpopular in the 1960s. Siding with the Soviet Union and the Peoples' Temple were both completely indefensible positions, but it's understandable why she sided with them given her own background and how marginal her views were at the time.
