So... something happened. The FBI shocked me with the FBI Director's Community Leadership Award (#DCLA) -- an award that truly goes to the folks behind The Very Asian Foundation.
It comes from FBI Special Agent in Charge Jay Greenberg, who appeared on Today in St. Louis to make the announcement. I thought he was there for a segment on women's history, and I really didn't understand the whole situation until way after the live segment!
Greenberg said, "By being mature in response to hate, Michelle Li turned ignorance into a celebration of diversity. Ms. Li’s effort proved critical for some young people. During a panel discussion with AAPI students nationwide, some revealed they or their peers created suicide plans because they felt unseen and afraid of being attacked and blamed for COVID-19.”
We don't want awards, but this recognition helps legitimize the volunteer and non-profit work we do, the programs we believe in, and the hours we spend away from loved ones to commit to our greater community at large. We are so humbled and honored to receive this award at the FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.!
While most people don't want to get recognized by the FBI, this is a little different! LOL
Thank you Rebecca Wu and Jay Greenberg and everyone at the St. Louis field office for this wonderful moment. Big thanks to the #TISL team Tram Anh and Rene Knott for organizing and keeping a major surprise!! ❤
