My father always told me, “If you’re going do it, do it right the first time, or don’t do it at all”. When it comes to spending money, this is absolutely true. Many times you go with the more economical option, then end up buying the more expensive option down the road. The money you initially spent is just a waste. As I’ve grown older I’ve developed my own saying, “Spend a lot of money on things you use a lot, spend a little money on things you use a little bit”. Always buy the highest quality you can afford, even if it means delaying your purchase to save up the money. This razor is something that I will use almost every day for probably the rest of my life, so in this case the price difference means nothing. I’m looking between the Feather, Wolfman, and Timeless. I think I am leaning towards the Feather. It seems to have all the qualities I’m looking for in a razor.

Diminishing returns yes - until you factor in quality of life. The AS-D2 is the only razor I've ever had that doesn't tear my face up. Several years after buying it I'm still grateful every time I use it, and for me that is a return that you can't put a dollar value on. I'm a gear-junky but after using this razor for a few days I experienced something I hadn't in many years - a complete lack of desire to ever use another razor, the 'hunt' and 'fear of missing out' were gone (at least when it comes to razors!).

Y D when I tear my face up it’s usually because of my bad technique or dull blades. But I agree with you about the quality of this razor. It even protects me from my own bad technique-even when I’ve dropped-in a brand new Feather blade!

Okay... 3 years ago I was looking for a folding knife for backpacking, found Nick's reviews and ... now I have 9 (3 spydercos). Earlier this year, after years of not owning one, I decided I needed a watch ( I can hear you yelling "don't do it") but I did .... saw your reviews and bought the Citizen BM8180-03E (very nice and didn't empty my bank account). When I decided that I was sick of paying way too much for cartridge razors (plus I hated the idea of putting all that plastic in landfills) I returned to using a DE razor ( started shaving 50 ..yes 50 years ago) and bought the Merkur long handle 23C after your review (FYI I'm a product designer and I do a ton research you are not my only source but you are one of them). I now also own the Razorock game changer (love it) and I look forward to your review. One thing about wet shaving though, the blade and razor are only part of the equation, the preshave, shave soap, brush, and post shave are also key elements to a good shave.... not to mention technique. That said I'd like to see you cover some of these items too .... I would reccomend soap and brush selection 1st. Sorry for being long winded... love your vids.

I bought I Merkur long handle because of Nick and absolutely love it. Shaving is easier faster smoother cleaner cheaper more comfortable and even more fun. There are literally zero downsides to double edge shaving except maybe that swapping blades takes slightly more seconds than a cartridge swap. But they last so much longer so it easily wins out. I don’t even shave my full face but it’s worth it so I think everyone should use DE razors

I've been using a Merkur 34c and Feather blades for the past 6 years. It took me forever to give up the "Mach" stuff. The replacement blades are way to expensive and don't last. DE or straight razor is the way to go in my opinion. Thanks for the review Nick.

I've got two simple Mühle DE-razors, one closed comb, one open comb, and I just keep experimenting with different blades and soaps. I used to hate shaving before I discovered DE-razors. Now it feels almost like a hobby, especially since I figured out how important good shaving soap is!

I know, right?!?! There will always be the next one out there that you want to try. I will reward myself by ALLOWING me to try (buy) a new soap when I finish an old one. That discipline is the only thing that prevents me from having cabinets and boxes of half-used products. I hate to let anything go to waste but..., if it doesn’t lather well, doesn’t protect as good as I want, or I just don’t enjoy the smell.... I let it go or maybe give it to a friend to try. I don’t make it a gift-just tell ‘him to try it and that it isn’t what I expected. It’s still a win for me ‘cuz I feel like it isn’t wasted and I still get to buy a replacement.

My recommendation: KAI DE Blades. Just as sharp as the Feather but a smoother shave. I have a thick beard and sensitive skin. And the KAI blade works perfectly with my Above The Tie S1 Slant Solid Bar with Kronos handle. Nick might like the Colossus if he prefers long handles. It's more than one needs to spend for a good razor but I love the fact that it's precision crafted out of stainless steel rather than cheap plated pot metal. It's attractive, particularly with the stand. And it's a one time purchase that will last virtually forever. Nick might also want to review shaving scuttles. I’ve owned the Original Scuttle from Dirty Bird Pottery for years and I’m spoiled. Nothing like warm shaving soap, my favorite being GLIDE Morning Ghost by Cold River Soap Works.

I started shaving with double edge razors about 5 years ago and havnt gone back since I manage to get myself a classic Gillette 1963 adjustable slim razor and find myself using it more then anything else

Rob Howell That was actually my first razor. In the ‘70s, my dad gave me his old Gillette Slim when he decided to switch over to the Trac II. I learned to shave with it. After some years it became nearly impossible to get DE blades and I switched over as well. Six years ago I dug out that old razor and ordered some Feather blades and I have never looked back. I picked up some other razors. You will like the Merkur Futur as it is also adjustable but OMG this AS D2 is the razor they will have to pry from my cold dead fingers. It IS expensive so start saving your pennies and treat yourself one day.

I have several razors. I can't decide if I like the Feather AS-D2 or the Rockwell 6S better. I like them both better than the Merkur Progress (my former favorite) and Edwin Jagger razors. I use Feather, Astra SP, Personna Medical Prep blades, and Gillette 7:00 in the black package. All are good.

Watching your wet shaving video, I believe over a year ago, was what prompted me to move from cartridge to DE razors. I own 4 RR Game Changers, a .68 blade gap safety bar, .84 blade gap safety bar, .84 open comb, and .84 JAWS (an open comb with fewer, further spaced teeth). I bought the solid safety bars before deciding that I really prefer open combs. My experience is that RazoRock razors provide excellent value, and I really like their Barber Pole handles. I also prefer exposed side blade tabs, especially for a design where the blade alignment pins are on the base (where the Game Changer's are) as opposed to being in the cap, but I wasn't consulted. I considered a Feather AS-D2 early on, but decided on a Rockwell 6S instead due to its 6 setting adjustability by flipping or swapping among 3 base plates. The 6S was also less expensive (even before the military, and former military, discount that Rockwell offers). I used the 6S and other solid safety bar razors for a good while before working up the nerve to try open combs, but I rarely shave with anything except OCs anymore. The first OC I tried was a RazoRock Old Type; that and their SLOC (Self-Lubricating Open Comb) are still in my rotation. This morning's shave was using a PAA Bakelite Open Comb Slant (BOCS) razor.

Absolutely love Feather blades. I use a 60 year old NOS Gillette that i found for $10 Australian (yes, I was very happy) or an adjustable Mercur. Great shave from both but the Mercur has a better handle and balance.

You should try an Above The Tie (ATT) R1 or H1. The R1 is my absolute go to with a voshkod blade. Also, Declaration Grooming or Murphy & McNeil’s soaps and aftershaves.

This is my favorite razor. Perfect for my medium beard growth. Baby butt smooth everytime.. The AS-D2 was my first razor and now a have a dozen great razors but none is as smooth as the Feather. I would recommend it to anyone with a light to medium facial hair growth and sensitive skin. Or people who ont like agressive razors. Worth every cent. Plus its easy to clean, do not scratch or get spots you will obsess about. I just love it

I feel like my straight razor is the epitome of “I’m gonna cut you!” when properly stropped… which is why I have a beard. Jk, I wanted to feel like James Bond in high school so I shaved with an antique straight razor back then, but over the 6 years since, I’ve woken up to the fact I live in the PNW and having a close shave is not the norm here. However, I’m considering enlisting in the Navy and if I’m gonna shave every day, this razor looks like a good way to do it.

I have this razor and love it. I wish I bought it with the stand. I use a traditional stand and the razor has the propensity to slide off of it. The Feather stand is made to the diameter of the handle. It is also a satin stainless steel, and it does not look exactly like the razor. Feather uses a special coating on the razor to resist stains, including rust stains from the blades. I use feather razor blades and have never had an issue with the blades rusting. I am considering a Rex Ambassador adjustable razor. I'd like to have a little more aggressive blade when I have 4- or 5-days growth. I find I have to make multiple strokes to cut through the stubble when shaving after 4 or 5 days, with the Feather. The Rex razors have a stand also. $100.00. The Rex Envoy has a blade gap that is virtually identical to the Feather. Both are high end razors that are heirloom quality and will last a lifetime.

Just ordered this razor as I’m at my last hurrah on “traditional” wet shaving, being it a straight or safety. I’ve gone the whole gamut of store bought blades to custom straight razors (and accompanying Shapton stones). I’ve been looking for a razor I can get a “quick”, but “quality” shave with and nothing in the safety or straight realm will do that, imo. Safeties and straights are really meant for “quality” shaves. Every time I use a straight (not so much safety), I finish with a Mach 3 as it won’t cut my face. If you’re not careful with a safety or straight, you’ll cut the shat out of yourself (Feather straight w a pro blade). I’m optimistic this one will be a bit better, but the Mach 3 continues to be my standby.

I wonder if Nick has tried Personna med prep blades, the best. Also for budget and awesome shaving check out the Razorock Lupo. I have used the Game Changer and Mamba, the Lupo is better and costs less.

I took the plunge and made the purchase 6 months ago . I use it every morning. It is mild and I am razor burn free, but don't be fooled . I still get razor cuts but nothing like before.

You should try the KAI blades 😉 I asked Feather once an they said this: the body is made from stainless steel and it's plated with chrome or nickel (i forgot exactly witch one)

Alexandru Badea I believe it is a brushed chrome finish. Kai blades are produced practically right next door to the Feather plant. One difference is that the Kai are stiffer and don’t flex as much. There are advantages to both qualities depending on use. Both are incredibly sharp!

Astras are not dull blades though not as sharp as Feather. Definitely sharper then most out there and a really nice blade overall.

True. My favourites remain Feather, Kai and Perma-Sharp. But Astra SP (Green) are very decent blades, not dull by any means. Nick should have said Derby, Dorco or Treet for dullness. Or maybe Nick meant the blue Astras ; they are rather mild.

I find Feather blades to be high quality and very sharp, but the slightly less sharp Astra Platinum gives me equally close shave and is smoother, more comfortable, gets more shaves, and cuts me less, so for me, on balance, the Astra wins.

Three weeks out of a feather blade?! Two three-pass shaves and they're done for me... If you haven't done so already I'd recommend checking out Polsilver, Gillette ruby and Nacets. as sharp as feather and last longer to boot. Wilkinson sword are my favourites (sharp as a feather, smooth as a Voskhod) bit most folks hate 'em...

For a knife guy... why not a straight-edge?! For me, I've been back to a DE razor for the last 10 years or so, after being suckered in to the perceived convenience of cartridge razors for a while. I'm back to the razor I had when I first started shaving some forty years ago... my grandfather's WWII-era Gillette. Using your words, what a freakin' gem. My wife has purchased some new, quality, DE's for me, but none compare to that classic. My only "objection" with your review here is stating that a blade can last three weeks. Whew, for the cost of the blade, I change them out after maybe seven shaves. Also, I've been flipping the blade over after maybe three or four shaves. It's an experiment I'm running to see if it makes any difference (shave on one side, then switch over to the other). Doubt it does, but it's easy enough to do. Great stuff Nick. Thanks for being as passionate as you are about the stuff that matters (to me at least).

I started with a straight razor bit found my neck too skinny and has too many large contours so I switch to the safety razor and was able to get into all the contours with the smaller profile .really good option if your looking for that classic shaving experience

Those of us who are into DE shaving can have too many razors. Check ebay or Mercari and get a better quality slightly “used” razor that one of us will have offered-up for much less. Then when you are hooked... (I did write “when” on purpose) and you have checked out more reviews you will know what “nicer” razor you really want to invest in.

Feather’s are lovely, and my choice will always be my favourite choice of blade, but I feel their razors are a bit over priced. I have quite a few DE razors and prefer either the Mercure Progress (the 4" version) or one of my mid 20th century Gillettes (Fat Boy, Slim or Flare Tip). I’m also quite taken with the Future. A mild razor will often shave closer because you can get in there; up close & personal. Using an adjustable razor on an aggressive setting for a first pass, then moving down to a 2 setting for a second or third pass works really well. On the plus side, the Feather is cheaper than a refurbished Fat Boy! Have you tried any of the adjustables that use interchangeable/reversible base plates, rather than a mechanism?

Nice video..Now I have both of AS - D2 wood edition and regular all stainless..would be nice to how show or make chart of angle how to shave with this razor without Blood Bath?? I have in my shaving DEN TOP NOTCH Razor's and Products but FEATHER I love you but shaving don't like you lol.. I hope you have taken the plunge. If not or you didn’t have the quality experience you wanted.... I suggest to new shavers that they start with a good non-lathering shave cream. I recommend Cremo. They even have some nice scents in what is a great starter experience. Don’t forget “WTF” (or Wet The Face). With this product you will have good protection that is consistent everytime you use it. That way you can focus on learning how to use that razor. When you feel that you are finally ahead of the learning curve it will be time for you to look at the next step. That could be trying a different blade or another razor to see how you like/don’t like the difference. Or, you might want to purchase an entry-level brush and try lathering a soap. Stirling.com has good quality soaps and inexpensive brushes that you can trust. Great scents, too. After that, you will be totally hooked and you will want to think about a razor upgrade. Just start simply and inexpensively. Don’t make lots of changes too fast. Master the learning curve on each step and you will feel successful while enjoying the experience.

Counterpoint re: diminishing returns.... I’ve seen Nick review A LOT of pocket knives, that you will use less, a lot less, than this razor. And you will buy 1 (one)..... singular. How many pocket knives do the guys and gals that watch Nick own? I know I have lots over 165, and they’re not used as much as this razor.

I use a Merkur Futur and I totally get what he means by "I gonna cut you" don't get me wrong I love it but it's more like worry about don't get bloody than it's about trying to get a good shave if you dont see blood it was a good shave

May I suggest you have a look at the Razorock Game Changer 0.84, which is a very well built SS razor and for a lot less than the Feather. It also works very well with the feather blades.

How's the aggressiveness of the Razorock compared to the Feather? One appealing thing about the feather is the non-aggressiveness when paired with non-feather blades. Looking for something similar without spending so much.

I'd always thought of this razor as the place where our sensibilities on wet shaving diverged as I couldn't see myself ever being able to justify the psychoticly high price tag. I was happy with my Merkur 23c (over the dozen other razors I had) and nothing would or could ever touch that. Which was true...right up until I dropped it in the shower, breaking off top cap in the process. So, while I waited on my replacement cap from Merkur, I idly entertained the idea of getting something more sturdy and stainless as a replacement. That said, finding one within my budget led me on a merry hunt across the interwebs. Similar to what you found, the RR Game Changer seemed to be the most accessible option. Right up until I rediscovered this video, searched for the words "Feather Razor" and ran across a new, open box AS-D2 being sold by a little old lady on FB Marketplace for only $30. So...once again Nick, it would seem that I am destined to follow where you have led...by finding the Feather to be my very favorite safety razor. Which given my self-image as a beautiful and unique snowflake, irks me to no end. That being said, I've consoled myself with the idea that being lazy and stealing other people's good ideas...and razors is one of the hallmarks of true greatness.

You can get a high quality US made Weber stainless steel handle and a Muhle head for about 70 to 80 dollars and every bit as high quality as the Feather.

I have a Gillette Fat Boy adjustable razor from the late 50s. Shaved with it for several years, it's really an amazing product. Eventually though I got tired of the hassle of wet shaving and picked up a high end Panasonic electric razor instead. The shave is almost exactly the same, but a thousand times faster and more convenient. I'll never look back.

I've owned the Feather AS-D2 twice and in both cases sold it on for about the same as I paid. It's just not as good for me as the Edwin Jagger 3one6.

These were known as saftey razors when I was a wee one , not very safe actually , I still have the scar on my left index finger from when I cut my myself playing with my fathers razor when I was 2 years old , that was 64 years ago .

I've used DE razors for years! Try something from Ikon or Phoenix or Muhle. P.s Feather blades are the absolute best blades ever! Unless you're using a slant style razor. Then you'll probably end up peeling your face like a potato. Hahaha!
