I have seen a few Hudsons with fender skirts installed before. Its not like it hasn't been done before. It just comes down to a matter of preference whether to have them or not. Chad has done a great job fabricating them from scratch. Jolene is doing a great job with the camera as always. Keep up the great work!

I've never been fond of fender skirts... maybe it was the 100's of rusty, nearly impossible to get off, skirts I dealt with as a tire changer 😂😂 These look right for the car, though! As always, I love watching Chad designing and talking us through his process!! I learn something new every day! Chad's description of what he's doing, combined with Jolene's camera work, makes each video enjoyable!!

I graduated in 1963 in California. The last - I mean the LAST things a guy would do to customize his car was to put on fender skirts or a continental kit. Ugh! I know that those things varied in other parts of the country but just thought I would relate my personal experiences. Us hotrodders tend to stick with what we grew up with.

@@brianhiggins4832 True. In the 40's they were called hot rods but later in the 60's the same cars were also called customs. Until the late 50's the 1950 mercs were way too new and costly to tear apart and customize. Most of the ones that made it into the magazines were done after they had been purchased as a cheap used car and built in professional shops just as they are today.

For the fender skirts I think that putting a rivnut or a welded on nut on the inside of the fender. Then running a bolt up from the bottom I believe that way it’s will be easier to line up. Also if you cut the bottom of the rear door glass it would go down into the door shell without changing the fit on the top. Great work! Love the look!👍😎

How do you open the doors if you mount the spare tires in front of them? I think I'd like the looks of them being mounted there as well, but seems they'd cause more problems being there then just leaving them off (or maybe find a different location). I'm anxious to see how you do it, I like your work & enjoy following along your builds.

He is gonna put them just in front of the front door and French them into the wheel well. French meaning he is gonna cut a hole in the front fender /wheel well and slide the tire in and it's gonna be filled in with sheet metal around where the tire is gonna be sitting inside fender. Actually, the metal shrinks fastest when cooled the fastest, and vaporizing water takes heat out much faster than air. I think you might be confused about how wet the rag needs to be, not sloppy wet or dripping, just enough so the rag doesn't burn. Just a rung-out rag, no drips or puddles. and rust is not a factor when done this way as the heat pretty much evaporated all the water where it touched anyway.

when i was young i made my living as a welder/fitter for steel boat construction. we bent 3" x 1/4" wall thickness round tubing by applying heat with acetylene torch, and quickly cooling it with a wet rag. we made handrails with visually appealing bends from bow to stern with the proper application of heating & cooling. wet rags will bend hot steel - practice!!

Hello Chad & Jolene, I am glad that you guys decided to leave it as a 4 dr. I have never been attracted to 4 doors but, in the case of this Hudson I am, it is a really good looking car in my opinion and it does look unique being chopped as a 4 dr. I think it will look good lowered, it is too bad that air bag systems are costly as that would really be cool. I don't know how I feel about the spare wheels and tires I will know better when I see them sitting there but, it is not my car anyways so what counts is how you two feel about it. Nice work on the fender skirts Chad, I am looking forward to seeing them 100% finished, lol. Jolene, absolutely fantastic camera work as always, I don't know if you can get any better when you are already the best! I understand the fender skirt debate. When I was a kid, I can remember some cars having fender skirts and the problems associated with them. The number one problem you had with fender skirts is when you had a flat tire and you needed to take the tire off, you had to remove the fender skirt. Having grown up in the rust belt, the fasteners that held on the skirts were so rusty that they broke apart so you could not replace the fender skirts after you changed the tire. In those days changing a tire was common because bias ply tires did not last that long. People could not wait to take off their fender skirts and throw them away. That being said, Chad is using the fender skirts to create a look. As with any artist, the look is nothing about function but everything about style.

The idea of adding an ornament to the skirts would make them unique. If the Canadian emblem doesn't seem appropriate that area could be filled in with a piece of costume jewelry or anything to give it some pizazz. Just and unbelievable transformation.

Typically fender inserts or guards are held on with latches or bolts that tie into the guard and bolt into the fender itself. 90s LMP1 Jaguars have a tool box latch that would hook into the wheel wells at the bottom. In two places and was set in with pins at the top. These were form fit to the wheel well to keep the cars aerodynamics gains above the weight added and be removed for tire changes on race day. Basically form fit fiber glass. Obviously there is pressure pushing the skirt out, else it just falls off the car.

Hey there Chad and Jolene, Been watching you build those fender skirts from scratch. The way you manipulate the round rod to build your skirt, I wonder what it would take for you to build your own skirt accents to fit your build. The first one you tried on the skirt that didn't quite fit looked like it would match the front grill. You could make it a contest with your viewers to see who would come up with a great design and whoever wins gets a piece of the car or hat or ??? Would get your viewers participation. Anyway, enjoy watching your builds, been learning a lot about welding and cutting and just doing.

My Dad likes the car and the work you have done with it. (He is a couple of years younger than it is.) And he has an opinion on it. This is put the original wheels back on it and paint them the body color of the car. ( And he also told me to tell you to take the Maple leaf Truck ornament pieces you have and then center them with the wheels on the fender skits.) I want to say the other piece is a Studebacker, but I'm not sure.

Design is always a point of contention. The great news is that it's a personal opinion and not a right/wrong choice. My opinion... I like the look better than an exposed tire (in this case it appears not to be centered in the opening). The best part is you adapt as you go instead of drinking with your initial thoughts.

As you said yourself the car looks Gangster with the roof lowered. Lowering the car would look good as well but welding up the back doors and putting fender skirts as well as blocking out the back windows will look TERRIBLE.

Geuss my eyes deceived me before the skirts so looked flat but obviously not though I did comment possible too early in video before the weld pulled back the top to give it an amazing look, I'm looking forward to process of matching the paint so it all looks originally aged. Like it had just drove out of the barn this way, being parked for half a century.

I'm relived to hear that you chanced your mind on not making it into a panel truck. I believe that was a smart decision. looking forward to seeing this lowered and it having a side tire mount. They definitely make them look more luxurious with that addition I fully agree with you there Chad.

Chad, the reason there are always that handful of people who ask "how are you going to change a flat tire?", is that they either do not watch the video at all, but make a comment like that because it is their way of complaining. Or, they hop, skip and jump around the video, only watching snippets. On more than one recent video, I have seen at least one person comment that he does that.

I prefer no side mounts because of cluttered look, restricted access to the engine and interference with the suicide doors. I usually don’t care for fender skirts, but am impressed with your design and workmanship. Without the skirts you would need a larger diameter rear tire and the rear needs to be lowered about 4 inches or more. It will come down some when the interior is installed. The front end should be lowered at least 2 inches, maybe more.
