Just two guitars, one voice, and a great rendition of an old country standard. Mule Skinner Blues was never quite the same after the Fendermen made their recording. It became the gold standard for any cover that followed.

As teens, many LOL memories of younger brothers going "nuts" over this song....who could not help but successfully or otherwise try to yodel with them....And thank the earlier TV series' 20 mule team Borax sponsor for helping our younger bros n sis understand that long whip, team of mules, the captain and his vocals to the animals, etc.

*** One of the Greatest One Hit Wonders, in my opinion *** On this day in 1960 {May 23rd} "Mule Skinner Blues" by the Fendermen entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, eventually it peaked at #5 and spent 18 weeks on the Top 100... It was composed by Jimmie Rodgers and first recorded by him in 1930... In 1970 Dolly Parton covered it; her version reached #3 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart... Sadly, Mr. Rodgers passed away at the young age of 35 on May 26th, 1933 {tuberculosis}...

I’m 64 now, but as a boy, I got this record from my dad - a little “45” record. I loved this song and sang along more times than I can remember. I remember losing the plastic center, that you needed to be able to play a 45 on an LP78 record player/turn table - so we’d center it the best way we could and play it away - and goofing off, we’d get the record “off-center”, so that the song would play slow, then fast, then slow, etc., as it went around. Oh what fond memories this song brought back, that I’d forgotten 🥲

I was lucky enough to see these guys perform when they were inducted into the Minnesota Rock & Country Hall Of Fame in 2005. Talked to them afterwards and two of the nicest performers I ever met. I asked if they had their original video clip from Dick Clark's Beech Nut Show and they did not have it. They tried getting a copy but were told the cost would be $1500, so they passed on it. Don't know why they were quoted so high because I know other performers who got copies of their own clips for $100. Now that Jim and Phil are gone, I doubt the vintage clip will ever see the light of day.

Awesome! Perfect cure for a bad mood, you can't help but be laughing by the end of this. Best of all is, almost 50 years later its pretty much just like the original recording. In 50 years hand Lady GaGa a guitar and a mic and see how she does. I hope I can play like this when I am their age.
