This brought back some lovely memories. My maternal great grandmother taught me to sew by hand, my paternal grandmother embroidery, my mother to use a sewing machine. I used to make heirloom clothes for the children of friends and family, as well as my own clothes. My mother tried to teach me to knit but I did not have the knack…everything turned into a triangle! I can make simple crocheted lace and button holders…nothing fancy. I’m quite disabled now, but going to see how hands hold up to making doll clothes again, which were my favorite. Thank you for this!

Stories and handcraft go together and are who we are. There is a reason that the child’s toy top lives on into today. It was such an important skill that everyone did it. You spun, made thread, had clothes to wear. While you worked in groups you shared your experiences. Useful, Respectful and Beautiful Life.

I so agree with your statements about spinning and knitting. I have spun at public events where women and some men would walk up to us(spinners) and get a strange look on their faces. The question was alway:"What are you doing?". They had no clue.

My first up-close view of spinning and weaving, I got so excited I had to be dragged away (I did recognize what was going on, but wanted every detail of how? where? when? can I? how do you do this?)... I was monopolizing everyone with questions. Like a kid in a candy store, and I was well past 30 years old at the time. Love the textiles...Still do.

But isn’t it wonderful when people are curious & brave enough to let others know that they don’t know something?! Then you have a chance to teach and perhaps spark interest 😊
@Kayenne54Ай бұрын
@@KitKatToeBeans Most craftspeople and artisans are more than happy to share their knowledge; it's how it gets passed on, now there are far less "cottage based" industries, where families learn at their elders' feet...

This was lovely to stumble a cross. What an amazing accomplishment to gather and knit a pair of socks. I cannot wait for your next adventure. Happy creating 💚🧶🩷

I got her Scotland book a few years ago, so happy to have opportunity to "meet" her here. Amen to happiness would increase😊 if everybody knitted...or any such hand work creativity.

Love this! What a wonderful person and a lovely video. I did find I had to put on subtitles as the sound did fade out in parts. Overall this is so very enjoyable and reflects how I feel about spinning 💖

Loved every minute of this, Debbie. Thank you, Harrie. I go to fairs and sit down with the "older women" and card and spin with them. They love the idea of a youngster like me caring on the traditions. I suppose I should say that I am in my 60s? But then again, they are all at least 20 years older than me. The advent solar dying calendar is something I will definitely do next year - as soon as the sun comes back! Thank you for the idea

Thank you so so much for your lovely comment! Hope you get as much joy and success in your solar dying adventures as Debbie has done - I’m such a fan of her advent beanie

I love spinning, and learned in my 20's! I went backwards and started out on an Ashford Traditional Spinning Wheel, now I'm using a Turkish Drop Spindle or a Spindle and Whorl depending on my mood! I'm almost 50 now and I love pulling out my spindle and just spinning wherever I am!

So inspiring! I traveled around Scotland in 2018 and picked up little bits of fleece everywhere I went. I've been waiting for my skills to be advanced enough to spin and knit it up and I think I'm about there. I love the socks and the idea of a knitted object telling the story of the land where it grew. ❤️

I can’t believe you are starting to Vlogcast! I have just finished In the Steps of Sheep (a Christmas present) and I loved it. At the young age of 58 I have just purchased my first drop spindle and fibre. I can’t wait to start spinning although hubby says I have to wait until after cervical fusions in Feb. We’ll have to see if I can wait until then!❤😂🎉

Such a lovely video, but for me, a little bit of a challenge to hear because of the background sounds. The best bits, were the bits without the music. We could even hear the birds singing outside and that was perfect.
@harriebaxterstudioАй бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment! Note taken on the sound - I was using new audio equipment when filming this video, and sadly got the levels too low, so it does get quite quiet in places I totally agree! Will be tinkering with my mic set up so that there’s more clarity in upcoming videos ♥️🥰

just came for a gander as I like watching spinners , weavers and all fibre arts.. In places I could hardy hear you because the music was too loud.

The one thing I disliked about the book is that it's a spinner's book. But they gave no details on the spindle or the yarns you spun.
