The Fermi Paradox asks, “where is everyone?” Even using the lowest estimates, there should be tons of civilizations in the universe, and yet we’re alone . . . or are we?

I recently started reading the sci-fi book Project Hail Mary (same author of The Martian). I can't put the book down! It's a really intriguing work of fiction about other life in the universe. Definitely recommend for anyone that likes the movies Contact or Arrival. Loving the content!

Great video, thanks for uploading. One thing to note, your up vote to view ratio is insane. 860 views so far with 200+ up votes. It'll slow down but dam, those are some solid numbers. Great job on this!

I enjoyed your tiktok content, but I like this better. I do hope I am able to keep up with watching if the length expands. I’m a firm believer that the answer to the Fermi paradox is the great filter and I am firmly in the camp that the filter is still ahead of us. I also think the filter is self destruction. The qualities that help us to advance are also the same qualities that make us more destructive. Eventually destructive capabilities get to a level that a small enough group of people have and utilize species ending technology.

I’m so happy you’re doing long form content. Tbh I could still listen to longer😅. My question is what are the odds were some of first civilizations forming. We keep theorizing that there are more advanced civilizations but what if we are some of the firsts? Also do we know how old the universe is? Like is it in its infancy still? I asking because it does make me wonder if it took us this long to form and develop. Maybe we’re just ahead. I whole heartedly believe we aren’t alone, but not to the ET level. Maybe there’s another planet full of creatures staring out wondering if there’s other life out there too.

They, many types likely, have “visited” and do frequently. The insurmountable amount of ufo data and evidence suggests this is the case or something like it :) what a fun and amazing topic!

There is a zero among the factors in the Drake Equation so N is quite literally and unavoidable zero. The existence of life on the Earth ranks as the greatest unexplained mystery of science. The existence of civilization is a mystery, too, but given that civilization self exterminates it isn't a mystery on the same order as the mystery of the existence of life.

“Eight planets”…maybe. This is not a “Pluto is a planet argument”, this is a “it seems likely there is another planet” argument. Although I have issues with the current definitional rules that make a “planet”, particularly what does “clearing its orbit” even mean? I think demoting Pluto was the correct decision and people who still argue it is a planet are just fueled on nostalgia and will be seen similarly as “Ceres is a planet” people would be.

Why do you think the 6th mass extinction is undeniably human-made? Asking because I'm genuinely curious. Surely we have an effect and correlation, though I'm not certain there's causality.
@sentientflower7891

There are entire books written on the topic but if you must know the reason it is because humans are destroying entire ecosystems and polluting the entire planet.

Stating that "None have come" takes a lot of hubris. He doesn't know that. We don't know that. It would be way more accurate to say "I'm not aware of anyone having come". It's really astounding to me how scientists find themselves stating things in strong terms when they have a belief about something rather than being honest and making factual scientific statements about it.

Not sure that it was an actual quote, but even if it was, it wasn’t a public statement, just a conversation among colleagues. The statement is perfectly fine in a colloquial sense, no hubris involved

I would assume a postfix of "...that we know of" for any scientific statement that covers thousands or millions of years tbh

@meltedwing It wasn't a scientific statement... Just a private conversation about Aliens between some very famous scientists. I mean one theory of the "paradox" even is that the Aliens know of us, but don't want to be seen

I mean, we are able to detect the smallest asteroids from a vast distance. I think we would have seen some aliens now if they have come. So I think it is safe to say that none that come. But it is true that it is better to say: "none have come that we know of" just because it is more accurate.
