This is the Jersey sound, no one could sing like Southside. From someone who spent years seeing Southside and the Jukes I always felt he deserved more recognition. Beautiful memories of hearing this beautiful, soulful voice. Thank you Johnny.

Johnny is the voice of the Jersey shore sound. The Jukes are one of the world's greatest bar bands. I don't know why Johnny was never a star.

1976? Can't help but think if this performance had been on SNL in '76, rather than SCTV, Southside would be today a household name. People who know his work treasure him, but there was never enough of us who knew his work.
@NevadaBoss6 жыл бұрын
the song was from mid 70s...this performance is from about 1980/81..and ya, the future Mrs Springsteen is one of the background singers. Small world, eh?

Wow! Here is an appearance by Southside in his namesake of Chicago, a blues reference to the Southside's great Blues scene. Although they refer to the Chicago as the Second City, this performance is second to none. Patti Scialfa is on background vocals too!

You're welcome. I saw them about 20 times between 1976 and 1980. I have to confess to moving on to other things after that, but never stopped following from a distance. I think it's great that SSJ has always managed to make a living from his music, even if he never became a household name.

SPECTACULAR!! Thanks, Paul Parker!! Never got to see Southside live in person, and I do remember SCTV, but didn't see this episode. Southside Johnny should have been (or should be) A BIGGER STAR around the U.S.
@bigfin89910 жыл бұрын
I saw Southside a number of times, once in Winston-Salem, NC, at Wake Forest University, in 1980 and there were no more than a couple hundred people there. As I like to tell the story, I was so close to the stage (the concert was actually held in the college church, which if memory serves me correctly was/is called Waite Chapel) that Southside sweat on me. It was a great show but bittersweet because I agree with you, he never reached the heights that he should have reached.

Probably the best concert I've ever attended because of the beautiful weather and amount and the variety of artist. Southside, Bromberg, Derringer, Dimeola, Aztec, Rungren, Charlie Daniels, PPL with Richie Cannada on Sax, Blotto (I wanna be a lifeguard), Flatt and Scruggs. We had a five gallon cooler full of Vodka Punch between three of us. I wore the three quarter sleeve T-Shirt back to high school for my senior year. I've seen Southside about thirty time since then. I last saw him in Lido Beach about ten years ago at the free 4th of July Fireworks Show......and at Coney Island Free Concert Series with Thorougood.

Probably the best concert I've ever attended. All day long. Great weather. About twenty bands. No bottles or cans but they let us bring in a five gallon igloo container with a spout. Vodka and grapefruit juice....lol. I've probably seen SSJ about 40 times.

SNL might have had some great musical guests, but so did SCTV. AND it was one funny show. Yeah, it was sometimes just local market and the states never really got it till Network 90. But, it was awesome television that overachieved week in- week out, with a distinctly Canadian slant to it that could make you laugh for hours afterward. And Yes, it could and did stand up to whatever SNL did. God, I miss this show.

@williampeachey60577 жыл бұрын
Paul Parker. Thank you so very much for this information that can finally put my mind at ease. This song has been trying to get back to me for many years. In 1977 I was a 22 year old and knew it all. I knew that this song had a beat that went straight to my soul. Are you at all familiar with the band Osibisa ? If not give them a listen. They also have a sound that goes to the soul. I have list of songs, albums and movies on my You Tube channel of stuff I am able to recall over the last couple of years. So far there are over 1,700 Items on my saved list. If you are bored some time check out my list and listen to a very wide selection of music. Thanks again
@joecorrado43652 жыл бұрын
And the native chanting on the intro is from the Clark Gable safari movie Mogambo. Hence the elephant trumpeting
