Thanks for this update. I actually bought two pieces of the K688 last year for me and my sis (right after your review convinced me to buy). One's diaphragm was closer to the grill, and the other was recessed. I assume it was a QC issue. I did contact Fifine about it. But it was not really that big of a deal. I didn't know until now that I actually bought 2022 and 2023 variants. Also, I replaced my mic's foam with Samson WS03 (just 5 bucks) last April at a music store. So for those who want to upgrade the foams, replacements are just few miles or clicks away. 👍

Both of them are pretty good for spoken words. If you have to choose one, then the K688 is better because its slightly clearer highs offset the bassy sound better than the AM8 does.

Hey Dave! I think it would be cool to compare the new Fifine K688 with (what I am almost certain is new) the new AM8! I had an AM8 I had to return due to it being faulty suddenly. My boyfriend has his old version, however, my new AM8 arrived in a purple box today, and I can see that the microphone also sits further back like the new K688 does! And dare I say that the foam also looks and feels slightly thicker? Awesome review!

That's an interesting new update! I can't guarantee I'd be able to review that, as I tend to receive versions specific to my region (the Philippines). So it might have to do with that. If I get an official memo from Fifine that there are updates, that's something to consider!

@@DaveSoltura Understandable! It would be cool though! I will stick with my AM8 for now because it’s cheaper, but like so many others, I like the design of the K688 more. Will definitely check to see if there are any updates as I am curious which one would win. Only thing I find annoying about the AM8 is the plosives, hopefully the new design fixes that!

It's nice that they upgraded the product, the biggest drawback preventing me from buying one was the plosives sensibility, but it seams to be worked out on the new version. The problem is that I want to buy the new version in black and it appears the market still got a lot of the old ones in stock and there is no way of telling one from the other at online stores before purchase. They should have at least added mk.II or something similar at the name of the product.

I wouldn’t recommend “upgrading” just because of a small product update. It’s an “update” only, but still the same tier of mic. If you’re going to upgrade, I suggest saving up for something at least mid-range to hear a noticeable difference. :)

I received my white K688, it is no different from what you have in the video, but for some reason I did not have a tripod in the kit, and it has such a shortened capsule and a dark gray pop filter

Yes. You can tell by the foam being thicker and the diaphragm on the new one does not go all to the end of the capsule.

So far, in recent testing, the PD100x does a pretty good job at that. However, you’ll still want to get a high gain audio interface like the Focusrite Vocaster 2 later on for best results, when speaking from a distance.

@@victornguyen2480 That’s already a fantastic mic! It wouldn’t be an upgrade- more of a switch to a different mic type. The Quadcast S is versatile. The K688 is slightly better and rejecting background noise, but you have to bring your mouth much closer. I wouldn’t make the switch if I were in your place, unless noise is very much an issue.

I accidentally applied a phantom power using unbalance cable on my K688. Will it damage my mic?

@@kojirokayano8220 I accidentally do that once in a while too, but I’ve never had any dynamic mics break on be because of it. I wouldn’t intentionally do it over a prolonged period, but an occasional slip now and then should be fine. Some insist 48v won’t do harm at all, but I err on the side of caution.

Better than condenser mics, but since it's still a mic built to pick up sound, it's inevitable to capture sound around it. If you're quite concerned about those noises, then you still need third-party plugins or filters to reduce those sounds.

If your voice is quite bassy, the Tank3 is a better pick over the K688.

If the K688 didn't have such atrocious resonance and handling noise it would be one of the best deals in audio. But even moving the cable makes a noise. Just unusable for a streamer who needs to move their mic.

i got not too long ago this mic, and the noise is SO BAD (on usb), idk if something is wrong with my mic. i just bought a good quality xlr cable and the fifine sc3 mixer, and i hope this solves it, because it is some REALLY bad noise edit: and i would like to know what do you make to have such a high quality audio with this mic, because mine is more like a 20 dollar mic quality. as i said, i hope with xlr it solves my problems, because i am really disappointed.

@@DaveSoltura i do talk really close, with not so high volume, the noise im talking about, is not like background noise... it's more like some noise u would expect from a bad mic... or something like that lol. and this noise happens even with the mic muted completely, like, 0% sound and mute button. it just has a really bad noise it sounds like an interference of some sort, idk how to explain it lol

@@DaveSoltura fortunately, it's not the same problem haha the noise im talking about is more like there is a fan directly pointed at the mic in the background noise (and believe me, when i equalize my mic, it becomes REALLY loud, kinda like a cheap mic). and i have a fifine a6v mic (condenser usb mic), and it doesn't have that same kind of background noise, which is strange, since a condenser mic should pickup MORE noise. im confused. edit: forgot to say it, but the background noise like cars and people talking in the background is not really loud, it's what u should expect from a dynamic mic, so it confuses me even more on why the hell there is this "fan noise" kinda thing edit 2: now that i searched for some static noise in yt, it does sound kinda like a VHS white noise sound effect lol (but like... in the background)

@@ahpisthebest ah! That fan noise is what you would call preamp noise. So both the mic, and headphones, have some kind of noise, as you boost their gain. If you listen to the mic using the headphone port on the mic itself, you’re introducing even more noise to what you hear back. The headphone preamps aren’t that clean. If you listen via speakers or your monitors, you’ll only hear the mic’s “fan noise,” but through cleaner playback. It should be less than the noise of both combined.
