In my opinion, the fifth element is love. That's why it was a human, not a stone. She had a short time to learn love before it was too late, but all she learned was destruction. That's where Korben played the important role in teaching her what love is. It can't be taught, it has to be felt.

That's why they have that entire scene of her finding out about war, etc., all the bad stuff, "Is there anything about humanity worth saving?" ... "LOVE, love is worth saving." It's like almost half the dialogue from the last 5 minutes of the movie (slight exaggeration :P ). But they're pretty obvious / unequivocal about what the Fifth Element is. They damn near beat the audience over the head with it, via the dialogue in the last few minutes of the movie prior to the climax (no pun intended).

Luc Besson, the writer/director stated "Milla Jovovich was cast as the elemental living weapon", so it would seem that she was the actual 5th element". In describing the plot he went on to say that after observing the actions and history of war of mankind, she had given up on life, but after Bruce Willis professed his love and kisses, she reconsidered and combines the power of the 4 stones and defeats evil. She is the 5th Element that releases the power of the stones, she is not a 5th stone.

@@vanhattfield8292 Ya I get that. There is even a scene where she points at herself and says she's the 5th element. Hear me out on this though. You blow air on the air stone, it activates. Fire on the fire stone and so on. In these cases the stones weren't the elements but were symbolic representations activated by exposure to their respective element. So when leeloo "activates" so to speak, was she exposed to herself? Or did she fire off the moment she was put in place? No. Leeloo activated when Bruce Willis expressed his love for her. She was the symbolic representation of love. Love was the 5th element. I believe the director may have said otherwise. I contend that just means he didn't understand his own larger concepts that run deep in the human story. Hollywood and their ilk never fail to surprise me with their shallow nature and inexhaustible incompetence lol.

I love Chris Tucker going off the wall. I love President Deebo. I love how it shows a future that is not a Star Trek-esque utopia nor a post-apocalypse or dystopian evilverse. I love the crackhead mugger with a photo of Corben's hallway strapped to his forehead to fool his doorcam. I love the drive through future McDonalds. I love the by-your-window homemade chinese food from a levitating barge. I love Leelu drawing down on Corben for kissing her without permission. I love how you can throw some pills in a super-microwave and get a full chicken dinner in 3 seconds. I love how 10 different Corbens all tried to go to the airport and get on the flight. I love how Gary Oldman just vanishes into every character he plays. I love how they "bug" the presidents office by putting a radio transmitter on a roach. I love Corben's negotiation. I love how future cigarettes are like 5 inches of filter and 1 inch of smoke. I love screaming at Aziz for more light. I love Ruby Rhod describing the Mangalores and the general immediately knowing who they are. It just so gleefully embraces every single thing that makes it nuts, and no other film is anything like it.

My takes: - 'The Fifth Element' that the film is referring to, is... LOVE. I could be wrong about it, but if the fifth element was Leeloo only, then Leeloo wouldn't have had to DO anything once she was re-created. She had to be 'activated/engaged' by someone who loved her. Also: If the Fifth Element was Leeloo, there's no 'larger lesson' to be learned: The other four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water, are of critical importance to all people in our daily lives. If there was a Fifth Element, wouldn't it be something that also has that same status (love), rather than Leeloo The Supreme Being? No one expects people to worship Leeloo... but each person could be expected to seek and provide love, whenever they're able to. - The blue alien's name is Plavalaguna. She has a whole range of superhuman abilities - like her ability to emit deep bass tones and hi falsetto tones at the same time. So... why couldn't one of her other superhuman abilities, be to open her mouth & throat, and to 'eat' the stones for safekeeping? -The Ruby Rhod character was supposed to be modeled after a combo of Michael Jackson & Prince: everything about him is done to wild-ass extremes, to get & hold peoples' attention. ...when he says, "BZZZZZZ!" while waving his hands around, that's his shorthand for 'BUZZ OFF!' ...Chris Tucker deserves an award for his performance. (The one thing I don't know: When Ruby Rhod lets out that extended scream during his and Corbin's escape - is that really Chris Tucker's voice? Or did the filmmakers have to tweak or create that sound? :) ) I also think that Corbin first kissed Leeloo because he has a romantic side/Prince Charming complex: He's looking for the PERFECT woman, and said woman literally drops into his cab. She asks HIM for help, then faints. If he was 'fated' to meet her, and fated to take on the role of Masculine Rescuer, could it be that the thing he was 'supposed to' do... was kiss the Sleeping Princess, to wake her up and 'break the spell'? Yes, he was mistaken, but the combo of the way-out-there circumstances under which they met, AND the fact that God/fate seems to have chosen HIM (a guy looking for the Perfect Woman) to save her, is so jarring that his thinking, "maybe a Magic Kiss is the thing to do here?" is at least understandable.

Both characters are portrayed as having inside information, as well as being trustworthy. So... could Leeloo have been the fifth element all along? ...Or, was LOVE the actual fifth element, and Leeloo and Plavalaguna both THOUGHT they knew what they were talking about, but were actually mistaken? :)

@TARAdubbleyuu

Nope. The world was saved by a woman being respected, then feeling loved. It was after just one man recognized how valiant she was, really SAW her, that love could muster a force of creation that rivaled and stamped out destruction/death. It's an allegory about life being in women and how the world doesn't recognize women for what they truly are.

Was gonna post this on patreon but figured I’d post it here. For those who didn’t figure it out, the fifth element is love. That’s what she’s meant to represent and why she’s the critical puzzle piece for extinguishing evil. That’s why the diva told Corbin she needed his love or she would die, and also explains a couple other critical bits in the movie… In the scene where she’s hiding in the vents and zorg is trying to kill her, then by the time Corban gets there he literally has to pull her out and carry her in his arms. You guys were like “What happened to her?” It wasn’t that any of the bullets hit her. She was just so emotionally broken and distraught by someone wanting her to die that badly. A similar thing happens when she researches “War”. She doesn’t see a world desiring of love. She sees a fallen world content in darkness and destruction. She sees a world content without her in it. That’s why, afterward, she can barely muster the strength to stay awake or keep on living. The fact that she represents love and all its needs therein automatically makes her that sensitive. Only after she can feel the love from Corban is she able to amplify it to destroy the evil. Honestly, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s very rewatchable, not just for the funny parts but because its message is always relevant. Really enjoyed watching this with you guys. Good pick lol

If you like the opera piece, it's from Lucia Del Lammermoor. The piece is named "Il Dulce Suono" translated to "The sweet life" Basically, it's her hallucinating her life with her love and lamenting the fact that she can't be with her true love because she was married off and stabbed her husband to death on the wedding night. I would recommend Pretty Yende's rendition of it. Just look up "Pretty Yende Il Dulce Suono" and it'll bring you right to it.

Ruby Rhod really needs a spin off. Like maybe after Corben takes off with Leeloo the government recruits Ruby assuming he played an integral role in saving the planet and he starts doing covert operations under the guise of a TV personality. Goes on missions, hijinks ensue. It could have a sort of Pink Panther / Inspector Clouseau premise where the inept protagonist manages to save the day through luck and maybe some help through a competent assistant. I'd watch it anyway.
