Fun fact: Luc Besson wanted Prince for the Chris Tucker rol, but when Prince got the designs and concepts for the character, he declined because he felt the wardrobe was too fem. There you go. You're thoughts and instincts were on point regarding Prince and this character. A classic film. Saw it in theaters when it was out. It was a blast and still a fun watch. Glad you enjoyed it!

The "Divine Language", spoken by Leeloo, was invented by co-writer and director Luc Besson, and further refined by Milla Jovovich, who had little trouble learning and developing it, as she was already fluent in four languages. The language had only four hundred words. He and Milla Jovovich held conversations, and wrote letters to each other in the language as practice. I understand why the Chris Tucker performance was so polarizing (because it's so extreme every single second), but I honestly think that's the genius of it. Given the extreme stuff that current entertainers and internet-celebrities do to try and keep the public watching, it makes perfect sense that in the future it will be even MORE absurd and relentless. Would I wanna spend a whole movie with Tucker's character? Hell no. Do I think he offers the perfect garnish to the bigger story in this film? Absolutely. :)

Not to typecast a person, but, this movie was made when Chris Tucker was the hot thing for a fast talking annoying sidekick. He umm, kinda has a thing, and he does it very well. No idea why the dress thing came up. It's well known that Gaultier himself teased Tucker with even worse outfits during the production of the movie. I am pretty sure everyone involved in this movie had a lot of fun making it.

Chris Tucker's character was definitely eccentric and feminine and odd. But so was the deaf celebrity white guy in a dress. There are some critics that just have a bigotry of their own....because they can't see that the entire movie was making it out as everybody being a different subculture from what Korbin Dallas was (and what the male audience of the 90s would expect in their present day) . In truth, it is refreshing that you don't have just one black character that needs to be perfect as a representative for an entire race in a movie..... and rather you've got multiple individuals from the criminal henchman to the eccentric entertainer to the galactic president where being black is their least interesting feature. They're all individuals, and you can like them or dislike them as individuals rather than being a test for the infallibility of an entire racial category.

The director is French. His movie "(Leon) The Professional" set new standards for realistic/dark action movies like John Wick did in this decade. And I don't get the hate for Tucker either. His role is realistic in that eccentric human celebrities in a world of aliens would have to be even weirder than they are today.

One of my favorite behind the scenes facts about this movie. The opera singer alien is actually the directors wife. She wasn't originally the singer the person hired got Pneumonia bad and couldn't do the film so when they brought her out as the replacement nobody else in the cast knew their reactions in close up shots during her solo were genuine reactions to her for real singing.

A friend of mine hates everything I suggest when it comes to movies. But with this I put my foot down. She was rolling her eyes, talking through the first 5 minutes to annoy me and tell me how stupid I am for liking stupid movies, then she went quiet, then she laughed and from then on all I heard was:"this is so cool/wow/omg haaaaahahaha" and then she said; I did not expect to like this movie but it was great. He never totally cracked Hollywood OR British TV due to him being primarily associated with screwball/slapstick stuff like Norman Wisdom or Jerry Lewis before him, which is kind of sad, but personal favourites of mine are his early live shows from the 90s, his lead role in MouseHunt opposite Nathan Lane and playing Prof Malcolm Taylor in one of the Doctor Who specials.

Just for yourself, rewatch this movie. Reason: you made the point during the tri-way scene between the pilots, ruby rod, and the conversation with zerg, on how it all intertwined. I would say a good 75% of the movie is just like that. Lots of the conversations are set to ironic visuals that compliment and insult each other to create jokes and gags that just keep on coming. awesome stuff!

I think it was maybe my 3rd of 4th watch that I started realizing how intertwined everything was. Like Zorg talking about firing extra cab guys just to do it and then Dallas gets fired a few scenes later, it was maybe my 6thvwatch when I realized that. I've probably seen this movie over 30 times at this point. It was my favorite since my teenage years and it helped me through a dark depression in my mid 20s, at that point I was watching it every couple weeks..

@@soulance8342 Same here to a lot of what you said...took me a few re-watches to even get the idea that i needed to pay more attention to it than your average movie. The creativity on display here, not only with visually linking scenes to dialogue, but with what I know as puzzle-craft in world-building. Dropping little seemingly-unrelated bits of information while one story is happening that end up, in a big way, effecting the overall story arc. For me, I was a failing writing before being introduced to this type of visual story telling, and that had me in my own dark place to be sure. But seeing this...gave me drive to actually want to study something, to actually take class. One class lead to another and it was like a path leading me out of that funk.

I've seen this movie 5 times in the 90's at the movies and once when it came back to the movies in 2019. Absolutely loved it. I even had the soundtrack. I was in Love with Milla from this...lol. All of them were great. Chris Tucker is hilarious.

I've loved this movie since it's release and never gets old. It was exactly that, Campy, but so futuristically stylish with great music and action. Fun Fact, there's an Interview on KZbin with the Actress/Model who played The Diva (Plava Lagunà) on all the behind Scenes training, costume work , etc ... She had to do for just that 1 performance.

Milla also does music, a folksy trippy style with mandolins, "the Divine Comedy". I saw her perform for a concert in Jacksonville, she was pretty wasted lol. Gary Oldman based his character off of Ross Perot, little southern man trying to rule the galaxy.

Second I said based off of not a direct imitation. Third southern man can mean a lot of things, especially when it is man from the UK playing a fictional character from the future. You have a very unorthodox, and inaccurate, definition of the term "southern man" that would not be understood by anyone below the mason-dixon line. The description of "southern man" is not a geography lesson...it is an identification of a subculture with habits and behaviors and expectations and customs and shared metaphors and historical reactions, etc. I wish Tim Wilson was still alive....because he could explain the differences. Someone living in Arizona does not have the "southern" subculture nor accent just because it is geographically closer to the equator than Kansas. Nor does someone born and raised in Texas have the "southern" subculture or accent. Frelling frell, even people living in Miami don't have the "southern" subculture or accent and they are considerably more geographically south than the south. Secondly, no...it cannot be "based on" something that it doesn't resemble in the slightest. It seems very much like there was some strange situation where someone doing a Welsh accent in a movie was described by you as Cockney.....and when someone speaks up to object to your error; you just shrug and say "close enough....they're both south of Scotland" as if that should excuse it.

@@laertesindeed Not really, I don't see a problem. He has absolutely stated in interviews he based this character off of a mix of Ross Perot and Bugs Bunny. You can look it up. He got the mannerisms, the strange expressions, and odd speech patterns down very well. It's a movie, so of course it is exaggerated. If you don't see it then you are one of the few, the scientific term being willfully ignorant. The accent is 100% accurate for a "southern man" in 2263. I would be happy to see the evidence that this is incorrect. So you aren't debating the Fifth Element you are desperately trying to turn this into something about southern culture. Which isn't as interesting to talk about.

My only real issue with this movie is just how forced everything about the romantic relationship between Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich felt. It would be a top sci-fi movie for me without that aspect. Unrelated, but I'd like to recommend movies that really show the craziness of Nicolas Cage as an actor. Con Air and Face/Off

To be fair, the romance was the point, since love was the fifth element, much like Captain Planet had 'heart' as the fifth. I understand it's hard to build a proper romance though when there's so much to get through within a couple hours.

This movie was my comfort movie when I was in school. I pretended to be sick so I could stay home and watch it several days in a row. I love love love this movie. For what it is, it’s perfect. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and as long as people watch it for the laughs and don’t go crazy over analyzing it then they’ll like it too.

This movie will have a place in my heart forever. This one and The Professional just came along with some fresh air, peppered with the perfect amount of extremes. Gary Oldman is bonkers and I'm there for it. Chris Tucker was great. The multi-layered traffic scenes are brilliant for the time, and still look great. For years afterward I expected to see people try and copy this, but I really haven't. And you mentioned it at the beginning, the music is thick and Rich and puts you there. Eric Serra, i think.
