This movie is AMAZING!!!!! It was the very first time I've seen actress Milla Jovovich on TV- it also serves as my first memory of her, five years before she was Alice in the Resident Evil movie franchise, and practically her marriage to Paul W.S. Anderson, whom she has daughters by, one of them who portrayed young Natasha Romanoff in Black Widow!!!!😉

Costumes were designed by world renown designer Jean Paul Gaultier, famous for his punk fashion aesthetic. We got a close look at the costuming from this movie when came to one of our local museums. We had to get shooed back because we got too close as we inspected his work because it was relieving to see that a big name designer like him still had mistakes in the clothes here and there (like busted rivets, for example). We were just getting into our second or third fashion magazine at the time. He's one of my designer wife's idols.

Besson directed this futuristic French fantasy, releasing it in 1997. Initially panned by critics and the general public alike, it eventually became a cult film before settling into the beloved classic it is taken as today. Besson produced a new SF French fantasy exactly 20 years later in 2017, "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets". Set even further into the future, it features a lot more alien races, a lot more alien cultures, and an exceptional opening montage that explains the founding and growth of the City. Just as with "The Fifth Element", the 2017 film was a struggle for critics and the general audience to grasp, so was panned. Still, it's been growing on people and is beginning to move out of its cult category and into classic. I highly recommend reacting to it. But back to "The Fifth Element". The part of the Diva was played by Besson's then wife (song provided by an opera singer and electronically manipulated); Leeloo was played by Besson's new flame Milla Jovovich, a former model who went on to such things as the Resident Evil franchise, "UltraViolet", the Zoolander franchise, and a number of other films, primarily SF and action flicks. I can't help but see parallels between well-known French filmmaker Roger Vadim and well-known French filmmaker Luc Besson. Vadim made "Barbarella" in 1968, a futuristic sexy interplanetary romp, starring Vadim's new flame, young newcomer Jane Fonda. The main difference is Vadim's film was more cartoonish softcore porn while Besson's film had more substance and creativity, including social and political commentary. Besson also used great action intercutting. The 'Princess Leia buns' were an intentional jab at "Star Wars". The head lab technician was played by Christopher Fairbank, who played the pawn shop owner who threw Quinn ('Star Lord') out when he learned Ronan was looking for the Orb Quinn was trying to pawn in the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" film. Props to Gary Oldman, who always disappears into his characters. Interestingly, Zorg and Dallas never meet, even though Dallas works for Zorg's taxi service and compete to get the four Element Stones. I love how veteran actor Ian Holm, the priest Cornelius (Bilbo Baggins, "Brazil", a number of Shakespeare films, etc; RIP) flubs his line and addresses Corbin Dallas as 'Willis'; Bruce corrects him, Ian readdresses Bruce correctly, and neither break character. AND THEY KEPT IT IN THE FILM! LOVE IT! So fun! Love the reaction, the engagement; great job! Pease consider reacting to 2017's "Vaerian and the City of a Thousand Planets".

I remember seeing the first trailer in the theaters. Bruce Willis was not cast yet and he didn't appear in it. What is sad is because the movie didn't do well a lot of the costumes were destroyed. Luc Besson also did Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It is based on a French comic. I like it and it is a beautiful world like the 5th Element. I think people are too hard on it but a fun movie to check out.

@sutej725 ай бұрын
The director Luc Besson acually wanted Prince to play the roll of Ruby Rhod but he turned the roll down. So when Chris Tucker was going to do the roll Luc told him to do it like Prins would have done it. The divine language spoken by Leeloo was invented by Luc Besson together with Milla Jovovich, who had a little trouble learning and developing it, Milla already spoke 4 languages fluently. The divine language has 400 words.

Milla Jovovich (Leeloo) was indeed a supermodel, and also a singer/songwriter, but her acting career took off before her singing career (though some of her songs were good). I think this movie sort of started her career as an action star, and she went on to do the Resident Evil movie series, Ultraviolet, and some others, though she's done serious dramatic roles, too.
