You should point out that the "federal land" there is actually *unceded* land, that belongs to the natives. The federal government is trying to _buy_ that land from the Sioux tribe with $1.3 billion*, and the tribe has consistently refused. This land belongs to them in accordance with the Ft. Laramie treaties, and has _not_ been ceded.

You forgot to add that initially the pipeline was supposed to go through Bismarck, but due to safety concerns it was rerouted to go outside of the town, through the reservation's water supply. And that results of spillage are virtually irreversible.

Bullshit, the Kalamazoo spill was cleaned up and down stream was drinking water from it in 3 weeks. The tribe wants the pipeline to go throw the reservation so they can get money.

The reservations water supply has been under plans to be moved 70 miles away from the pipelines crossing for years before the end of 2016 because of natural gas pipelines that go through the same spot, so the pipeline was not going to affect the reservations water intake at all. Also going through Bismarck would have been 11 miles longer and it would have been way harder to route through the more densely populated area.

Bismark's overwhelming white population protested the pipeline for health reasons, just like the Sioux. But when it comes to the welfare of the Natives... well, any accurate history book can tell you where the favor has typically fallen.

Have you heard the NASA news reports about unobtainium? Unobtainium is the most energy dense element on the periodic table. Scientist have already detected it on planets outside our solar system. They say a few grams of it could power a large city for over a year. If we could bring some of that back to earth, even 100 KG worth the time and cost to get there would be worth it. They think the tech will be ready to travel outside the solar system by 2100.

I'm sorry but I really don't think you understand anything about Native American Civilizations. The reason why Europe, Asia and Africa prospered so much is because of geography. The latitudiness of the East Hemisphere allowed plants and animals to grow anywhere from China all the Way to Western Europe. This helped foster trade and advancements among Asian, African and European civilizations. On the other hand North & South America are very longitudiness and rugged. The unfavorable geography of places like Panama and the Andes made trade and technological advancement difficult. A majority of the Native American Tribes were nomadic people, they rarely if at all grew crops or domesticated animals. When the Europeans arrived, sure foreign disease wiped out a large portion of Native Americans but looking at it in a social darwinistic view, the Native Americans did not possess the "genes" in order to adapt and survive. It is the hard truth that the Europeans were so technologically advanced that even if no Native Americans died from disease or alcoholism, they still would not have been able to fight off European guns and steel.

You should take a moment to look at a map and realize that there already is a pipe north or Bismarck and that if this pipeline would go north of Bismarck it would be a few kilometres longer, making it more expensive

Fossil fuel energy is not only limited and hazardous, it is also outdated. Coal and oil have been in use since the 1810s. That's 200 years of the same process. There needs to be a push for new ways to harness energy. An outdated terminal system isn't effective anymore. The environmental effects from fossil fuels add more only add to the problem. Another fact is that oil, coal, and natural gas are very limited compared to something like wind, nuclear, etc. The question to ask is what will happen when the world runs out of oil?

Irregardless of the question over land rights is the simple fact that the pipeline is too close to a major source of water and the company has a history of leaks. Also, It would be great if VOX made an attempt to interview a representative of Energy Transfer Partners and gave us more of their side. What are the alternatives? How many pipelines actually run through the US already and what is their safety record. Everyone complained about the Alaskan pipeline because it would suffer from earthquakes and affect wildlife but it turned out Caribou liked humping each other near the warmed pipes and it actually benefited the country as a whole to the tune of $400 billion.

Taylor Braithwaite People will cite some instances where things have failed, like the oil leak in the gulf, but it is important to know those situations are an extreme rarity. "Oh no, 5 planes crashed in the last month. Flying isn't safe at all!" Never mind the thousands of flights that take off every hour and land safely. People love a good fear story as reason to not do something regardless of the facts.

I wish this video would have spent more time addressing whether the concerns about environmental risks are overblown or not, since that seems to be the crux of the issue. This is incredibly one-sided coverage. I'm very disappointed. Here's one example: the video mentions an increase in oil spills, but it specifically ties that to the increase in oil production. The net result: no actual information about the intrinsic safety of *this* pipeline. Also, having a single water source is unremarkable; what is worth mentioning is the tribe's new water treatment plant, whose intake valve is far downstream of the pipeline. Almost every other piece of information here is pointedly *the tribe's interpretation* of the facts. How about reporting on the pipeline's risk to the water supply and cultural sites, and the credibility and nature of the tribe's legal claims? How about doing that by consulting with independent experts in the respective fields? I hate that there's no honest journalism outlets which can be appropriately skeptical of both ETP and the Standing Rock Sioux. I feel like this protest has been given way too much credit in liberal culture.

There has been no archaeological evidence of any burials in the area cited. The Missouri River is already crossed a billion times by oil pipelines, including one a number of miles north of the proposed new pipeline. The water supply, if its going to be ruined by an oil line, is already ruined. All they have accomplished is delaying needed infrastructure, requiring a vital resource to instead be trucked or transported by rail to where it is needed. Also, that it is stopped is a bit of an overstatement. Its delayed pending more evaluations.

This is factually incorrect. Prior to any pipeline, the land being occupied by the protestors is not Indian land. What happened was the tribe said they owned that land and it was unjustly taken from them by the Federal government. The court agreed with the tribe and awarded the tribe $150 million dollars as compensation for the land. The tribe did not accept the money and still claims the land is theirs. It is not, the court stated it is nit their land and compensated the tribe for it. That's as good as it is going to get. Now the pipeline company owns the disputed land and is putting a pipeline through it. It is the pipeline company's legal right. There has already been environmental studies which all pasted. In realty this has nothing to do about water or the environment. It has to do with the fact the Tribe did not like the original court ruling and still wants ownership of the land. The tribe should have taken the $150 million. It is private land, so do you want the government to tell you what you can or cannot do on your land? That's the question.

You don't seem to know a lot about how small midwestern towns actually get money. Not everybody lives in the city of the suburbs you know. A pipeline going through the area would bring thousands of jobs to towns that might only have around 50 people per square mile. That makes a BIG difference percentage wise to these small towns.

While this is good as they should try to minimize risk from pipelines, I hate that so many people on my side of the aisle just reject the idea of pipelines in general. In this case (since it goes through aboriginal land) and with this company (since it does have a bad leak record when compared to other oil/gas companies), it makes sense to protest it. However, as an environmental engineer, I see pipelines for what they are, inherently better than the alternatives. Oil is going to be transported and produced regardless of whether there is a pipeline or not. But when oil is transferred by truck or by train, there is a far greater risk of spills happening (see the Lac Megantic disaster in Quebec, Canada only a few years ago). We shouldn't just reject the building of all pipelines like I see many on the left do.

Thing is, the risk for using rails isn't actually worse, There was a single year when it skyrocketed due to two specific disasters, but the general safety record is better. There are also legitimate questions about how much it needs to be transfered, or more specifically, how many times. The pipeline can be seen as a gift to refinery owners down in Texas, making it cheap to move crude to them and the need to transport the finished product a second time. Refineries could be built up north, but the southern ones do not want the competition nor do they want to carry the full cost of moving raw materials to their sites. So the pipeline can be seen as a massive, expensive bit of protectionism.

***** Oh for sure, it's never going to be easy to determine where to put pipelines. It's always going to be a compromise. And also, the money that IS invested in pipelines isn't being syphoned from renewable energy. It's money that was going to be spent on transporting it other ways. These pipelines are paid for by the respective companies. Now, if tax dollars are being used to subsidize the building of pipelines, then I would definitely agree that that is not a good investment for the government to be involved in. Then I agree with you, this money should be subsidizing alternative energy instead.
