Goku thought Gohan's rage would be enough, but probably underestimated what it would take to bring it out Basically, Goku could fight Cell until his body is destroyed since Cell could keep regenerating and they would rather let Earth be destroyed than team up on an opponent

It was the perfect balance where technology made it possible for creative people to make what they truly imagined but it was still not easy enough for untalented people to fully master, so all the good shit from late 80s and early 90s are really good.
