I wish there were a way we could add widgets to the desktop as in Mac. I know there are some apps like Rainmeter or Bewidgets, but Bewidgets feels like trash and with Rainmeter you need to download the whole skin just to get a particular widget which sometimes doesn't work properly. Is there any solution for this???????????????

Currently sorting through a folder with more than 10000 individual photos and it is impossible to work in file Explorer. I had to split the content into separate folders using some cmd tool as FE was just loading (for more than 24h) indefinitely when trying to access the folder... And still sorting through the split up folders is so hard to focus on as the pictures jump up when scrolling through.. So hard to track with your eyes it's actually exhausting after

I can’t relate more haha XD. The pain of this is off the charts especially when FE takes ages to load the picture or video previews with that little green bar at the top that never makes it all the way. Seems pretty neat. I will say that the improved file preview thing can also be done with PowerToy. The strongest feature has gotta be smooth scrolling and the Miller columns. Never used MacOS, but always liked how it was organized. Wish it was more lightweight, like it looks super modern and all, but what's the point when it takes longer to get from point A to point B. An option to disable or minimize animations would be great honestly.

I find it just on the edge of noticeable and bearable and unbearable, really depends on what your doing. If its alot of files and transfers the stability could be an issue but if it is for single quick and light browsing then it will be just fine in that regard.

I use Files for two reasons. It doesn't have that "bounce back to the top" bug that's brought on by a few things (like the automatic trim color setting in appearance). It also doesn't have that "wait for OneDrive to catalogue the file" thing. My internet is slow, so I have to wait 10-30 seconds to rename a file that I copy into any synced folder. Files lets me rename it instantly.

Hmmmm, not sure if your on a different version of Files cause I have "This PC" as a clickable list item in the sidebar on the left. Have you tried pinning it? There might be something in the settings but I also know that if you right click on the headings or the white space with all headings collapsed you get some reordering options. Hope that helps? I think your best bet is to pin the menu and move it to the top in the pinned menu :)

1:34 It's not a "nice, cool" animation of elements changing their position when resizing the window. It's fuckin NESSESARY! It's not just an animation that makes experience more delightful, this animation helps our brain to track where items have moved to. In default File Explorer elements just teleport to a different position, which is very confusing, because we don't understand where exactly items moved to. Like... I bet you all noticed that File Explorer DOES NOT have smooth scroll… in 2025… Yeah =_= And I think we all agree that this is terrible. Smooth scroll works in the same way, it allows our brain to track the movement of the items, so you see the element in position A, and how it moves to position B, it helps to track changes in the interface. This resizing animation is the same and it's as important as smooth scroll. But yeah... 2025 multibillion company can't even add a smooth scrolling into basic system app of one of their most important products... HOLY F...
@Productive_Tech6 күн бұрын
Couldn't agree more, I probably should of been as thorough as I was in the smooth scroll section at 5:57. 😅 I find the lack of animations in FE very jarring. Though many have divided options on Apple, which is fair, their UI design is unmatched, especially in the animation department which they got right from the very beginning. Yh they've made a a few questionable decisions but their UI decisions are usually on point and it's clear MS took heavy inspiration in the win 11 design but just didn't bother to touch file explorer...
@lozikl6 күн бұрын
@ To be honest the whole windows 11 redesign feels like they just made it, because they needed to make it more fresh looking and because MacOS had this design. So they just copied it, without having any understanding of why and for what purpose they were changing interface and didn’t even understand why Apple's designers did what they did. Like seriously… do they even have designers at Microsoft?
@Productive_Tech6 күн бұрын
Exactly, even the design side of things they literally missed stuff out and removed features in the process especially in the beginning. You only have to take a look at the control centre all these years on to know where their priorities lie. I think if this was any other company they would be ridiculed like no other but for some reason MS gets a free pass? Like you say it's like they just copied the design trends many other companies have established without thinking about usability... Maybe windows 12? 😅 Or switch to the light side or dark side instead? 🐧🍎

The problem with this app (as others have mentioned) is performance, but that's a problem with FE as well (win11 made it so much worse), I've had so many crashes and bugs with FE, and I can still replicate them. It's insane to me that no one at MS gets pissed off enough to fix it, let alone because it's their job.
@Productive_Tech8 күн бұрын
To be honest it's not just the file explorer it's other aspects of windows as well. If it was any other platform people would be going mad but windows and Microsoft often just get a free pass with some of the UI and design decisions. Windows is highly scattered and inconsistent and I don't see it changing any time soon unfortunately. Maybe it's time to switch sides to the light side 🐧 or the dark side 🍎, depending on how you look at it XD

@Productive_Tech I switched to the light side years ago and it's great, but I still have windows for a few things(I also like to check in and see if they improve, but they don't) and if I help anyone it's typically windows, every time I use it, it sucks.

Can this file explorer rename files in bulk? that's a mayor feature I just recently discover is not available in windows like in MacOs, I use multiple files in my work laptop (MAC) and trying to do the same in my personal PC I had to check a tutorial and use excel and the cmd just to rename files in bulk. I can't believe something so useful is not available in windows.
@Productive_Tech3 күн бұрын
This feature is available in the normal windows Files Explorer but you will need to download a "mod" app if you like. This app is designed and made by Microsoft and gives you additional features. The app is called "PowerToys" and you can get it from the Microsoft store for free. After you download it you just want to enable the "bulk rename feature" from within the features list. This will then add this feature into File Explorer as if it was there in the first place by default, there is not commands that you need to write or complex UIs, the feature is pretty neat and intuitive once you enable it. There's quite a lot of info about this online but I've also made a video on PowerToys here if you want to check it out. :D kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2mVYZ2aiL90mZI

That's Microsoft for you lol. If there was one feature that is a bit annoying for me personally it is the smooth scrolling. Coming from a laptop trackpad file explorer was alright in this regard but moving into more of a desk setup I just found that the content jumps in notch intervals which is so annoying for me. Literally no other UI does this nowadays yes this fundamental part of windows does for some reason. And yes I agree they really should put all development on the speed and performance side of things rather than that of more features cause it has enough of that advantage

I don't get why Microsoft just can't seem to make a decent file manager. Over in Linux land, there are many file managers available, most of them are free and open source, and all of them that I've seen are better than the Windows file manager. Files is better in UI design and features compared to Windows Explorer, but for some reason it is very slow a lot of the time. Again, comparing this to Linux land, all options I've seen are better on this front (in fact all options I've seen are faster than Windows Explorer).
@Productive_Tech4 күн бұрын
Never tried Linux before. Hopefully I can get around to trying it out this year but let's see... If this open source project was created for windows and the only problem with it is performance (likely for difficulty in optimising for windows) then would indeed imagine the Linux file managers to be pretty decent. Files is great I think as a showcase of what FE could be with some further tweaks and windows optimisation but MS always just puts half baked stuff out there
@fotnite_4 күн бұрын
@Productive_Tech One of the most popular ones, Dolphin, apparently has a Windows build. Dunno how well it would run, or if it will look ugly because it is expecting theming that isn't there, etc. but it's there. Probably isn't maintained as well as the Linux version so there are bound to be bugs.

What is surprising for me that from Microsoft store is paid But when I downloaded it it was free and i didn't know any other way to download it
@Productive_Tech8 күн бұрын
I think it changed at some point so that the way to get it for free would now be from the website and if you wanted to pay and support the developers for long term use there would be an easier way which was through the Microsoft store.

I havent seen the video yet but i have used this and it wont Open instantly like the default explorer therefore I am not using it anymore
@DznMiguel9 күн бұрын
Okay I have seen the section where you mention startup times But yeah those times made me not use it anymore It's an awesome app nonetheless
@Productive_Tech9 күн бұрын
Yep, I can get behind that as well. I feel if all efforts were solely placed on speed, performance, and reliability for a period of time, I think this app could fully replace file explorer for many people.
@Ayushyadav-rq3bu6 күн бұрын
But ive tried it Its nice better than original but at the same time slow and requires more hardware
@AmodeusR12 минут бұрын
As some said here, It really lacks in performance, and that's considering I use a Ryzen 5 5600G, one of the best cpus one can get currently, so yeah, it's not really a viable product, despite being really beautiful.

Will the files you download automatically go there? And will powertoys features work on it?
@Productive_Tech9 күн бұрын
The files app is simply just a portal if you like into your system files as it’s an alternative to the file explorer so if you do something in file explorer it will reflect in the Files app and same the other way around. In regards to power toys I am not sure tbh but if I had to guess it likely won’t as it would be classed as a different app by the system
@FPL_worm9 күн бұрын
@Productive_Tech I'll give it a try, but not having powertoys features would be quite a big downside
@Productive_Tech9 күн бұрын
@FPL_worm no worries, I was just showcasing/sharing it from a cool and interesting app perspective after I saw it online :)

The tragedy of all devs bragging with their file managers, TagSpaces, Eagle and even Adobe Bridge, none of which work with the open/save file dialog is a joke. It's always been.
@Productive_Tech8 күн бұрын
Tbh not sure if you can do that with the files app from the toggle switch I showed in the video, I didn't try it myself personally. Could this be a limitation that Microsoft have created so it's the best the devs can do? Just theorising
@Landekar8 күн бұрын
@ I don't really know. But I have been searching on this subject for several days now and this is hopeless still. It's obvious, casual consumer users will never agree to do this, because solutions are very tedious. What seems to be the good answer is: Hooking the apps, which is the most robust way to intercept and modify file dialog behavior. With something like Detours or EasyHook. But I didn't figure out how to do what I need with it.

I used this app many times but when I open this app every time it takes 1 minute to open it is so messy when we are in urgent works. According to my opinion file explorer is still better than this ( I have used the free version of this) 😊
@Productive_Tech8 күн бұрын
Yep I think if they can solve some of these issues for the various system variations that people use it would be a good incentive to switch to it if your looking for a modernised alternative

@Productive_Tech8 күн бұрын
That's valid as well tbh, there's nothing really wrong with file explorer and that's why I don't think they have changed it much but I think this app offers a good look into additional things that they could add for people who would value the changes.

I've cussed Microsoft for 25 years for not having a font selector. I use File Explorer all day and can barely see

Now that you bring it up I'm surprised also that there is no way to change the font natively, might there be a 3rd party way to do this?

@Productive_Tech Microsoft's answer is to change your system resolution I can't do that because if I do the software I develop will not look right for people with normal vision.
