My Dad actually met Stephen Kings back in '89. He was touring with a band then, and they found out what his address was. So they parked in front of his house and said "Hi Mr.King!" And his response was "Hi kids, now get off of my property!" XD

I'm so glad I found your videos! You're one of my favorite film and media reviewers now! I remember watching Pet Sematary and several other Stephen King novel-film adaptations with my mother when I was younger, so it's really awesome to see this review, and I'm grateful that you review movies that you like instead of just pointing out the flaws in bad movies -- it's a nice change from watching other film reviews that just bear through the worst in cinematography with a huge dash of cynicism (which I still like, but I really do enjoy a variety of views). When it comes to the gore, one of my best "coping" methods is to actually think about how they designed the effects, and when you can see through that, it almost becomes cheesy and kind of hilarious (which is how I'm able to laugh through Jud's brutal death -- because if I'm not laughing, I'm cringing). Granted, there are some deaths that are just too brutal even for thinking "it's just red-colored corn syrup!" All the same, this review was awesome and I am totally in love with your videos, and now I'm probably going to binge watch most of them over the next week or so.

Many great performances in this flick, music was on point, lots of reliance on atmosphere and mood without TOO many jumpscares (although there were a number). Awesome movie all around. Why wasn't Dale Midkiff in more stuff?? His performance in this felt so natural (as did Rachel and Jud's, but as the protagonist a lot was riding on Louis). He played the early "straight" Louis well and seemed like a loving family man, and the later, more complicated Louis also very well.

Pretty cool. I actually saw a movie where the actor playing Pascow was a lawyer in, I believe it was a remake of "Judgement at Nuremberg". Took me awhile to spot him, but his voice gave him away. I totally marked out about it! like "Thats Pascow!! PASCOW!!" I dont know why exactly, but this movie and book really made a lifelong connection that I carry. It could be that I saw it as a kid (6-8 yrs old) and never forgot how haunting it still is for me.

As far as I remember, Jud was actually Louis father, but neither of them knew it. It´s interesting, because this is revealed at the very beginning of the book by the narrator, however it is never developed as a subplot nor even mentioned at any other point in the story.
@Cyborcat5 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure you're remembering wrong--there's no way a writing flub like that wouldn't be a well-known fact. More likely their friendship was worded poetically, along the lines of "should have been his father" or something like that, and maybe you misinterpreted it--that sounds more like something SK would do, rather than randomly reveal something like that for no reason and then never bring it up again.

+Alex Martin One of the first things he does after meeting this family is take them to the pet cemetery where he scares Ellie by saying it's where the dead speak, his delivery of that line is borderline creepy. Then when Church dies he takes Louis to the place where the dead walk, knowing it changes whatever is buried there for the worse, without telling him about it. He does this after saying children have to learn about death sometime. In the meantime, he's still getting closer to the Creed family. Finally after Gage dies, he's so worried that Louis will take him there that he falls asleep on the front porch smoking a cigarette instead of stopping him. Considering this is a Stephen King movie I doubt he was just a kindhearted man innocently trying to spare a little girl from grieving her pet. I think he was an evil old man trying to destroy the Creed family and he was also suicidal but didn't want to actually have to do it himself. He had to have known that Gage would come for him with how close he became with the family, which is why he never attempted to stop Louis.
@lindabowen1038 жыл бұрын
The film adaption of Pet Sematary glosses over the Wendigo demon/spirit that is largely spoken of/referenced in King's novel,and is in fact the demonic presence that uses Gage's corpse as an avatar to torment & murder both Jud and the mother Rachel
@daveruda6 жыл бұрын
I think Pet Semetary has tonal issues. Its kind of scary and disturbing sometimes and then its silly and cheesy sometimes. Its a shame because I think it would hold up much better if the scary vibe was maintained. As a kid the funny stuff was what made it watchable...It was almost too scary sometimes. So I guess that was what they were going for.

Just finished the audiobook of this, read by Dexter Morgan himself Michael C. Hall, was the first time I'd "read" it in years. It had always been a favorite, but I forgot just how good it was. Still remains the only King novel I ever found genuinely scary. Also, holy crap did they age Zelda up for the film or what? In the novel she's only a couple of years older than Rachel, so she should've been like..10. She looks like an adult in this. Would have been far creepier, far more impactful if they kept her young.

a Wendigo that's an interesting myth creature to have around. now its main stick is that people that preformed cannibalism, murder or were extremely greedy would be possessed by a Wendigo and be driven to either harm those closes to them or consume more and more human flesh and be cursed to have a hunger that was never satisfied. now while normally its not related to things like resurrection there are a few myths of some those were possessed by a wenigo that there hunger grew so great that even death could not keep them and they would rise to feed again. is it possible that someone used the resurrection spirt circle thing to bring back a loved one and that well zombie is still around stalking the wood?

What's wrong with Ellie Creed? She was like the strongest member of the family. I loved her in the story as well as in the movie.
@Cyborcat9 жыл бұрын
Like I said, I find her voice annoying. Had no problem with her in the book or audio drama, I just didn't care for the actress(es) who played her in the movie.
@javiergonzalez13939 жыл бұрын
Cyborcat I agree. I hate to say it, but Blaze Berdahl who played Ellie, to me, was the only person that got on my nerves in the movie. No offense to her, but her character in the movie came across as just a brat. The film is not without its flaws, but as a whole, looking back, there are so many good qualities about the film that the remake they are working on will not be able to capture the same charm again. I know that some people have complaints about certain parts of the film, but I'd point out that the atmosphere and photography really gave it a gothic horror vibe throughout. The kid who played Gage, Miko Hughes was adorable, yet creepy in his performance. For such a small kid to be able to do the acting he did is great. A lot of good elements stood out to me, like even the cat they chose to play Churchill. Even the cat acted great, like when the dad had to put it down near the end, how it laid on the ground as if dead. I mean, that is probably the scariest looking cat I've ever seen in a film! Another thing is the makeup. They did a fantastic job on the horrific makeup and prosthetics they used, like the prop of Judd when Louise finds him dead, or the makeup effects on Zelda. Then there is the haunting Elliot Goldenthal score. In my opinion, the best scenes involved Fred Gwynne, Miko Hughes, and Andrew Hubatsek (Zelda) then Dale Midkiff, Denise Crosby are second best on the scale. Then, Brad Greenquist (Victor Pascal) who I thought could have been a little bit better, but it worked for the most part. Last on the scale is Ellie. I just did not like the performance at all in the film. She did not come across that way in the book, if I can remember. There are just so many memorable and disturbing scenes in the Pet Sematary movie that overall I'd say it's one of the best adaptations from King's books. It's not as well directed as say, Misery or the Shining, but it still works for me on so many different levels, and is still pretty disturbing to watch to this day.

Mostly, but he does distract Judd so Gage can slice his Achilles's tendon (and purrs afterwards). Also, Rachel was heavily drugged in the scene you're talking about, so I doubt she LET Church onto the bed so much as he probably hopped up there while she was asleep to piss off Louis.

@Teatime77715 жыл бұрын
Cyborcat They changed things up with the remake. They mention the Wendigo creature from the book that poison the burial ground. The new Elle Creed is a better actress than the original actress that played the character. They made some changes of what happens to the Creed family. It is pretty good but the original is better. It is at least better than the sequel. The remake has no loose ends like the original had. But it does not go enough into the backstory of the burial ground like the original movie did. John Lithgow did a pretty good as Judd but Fred is still a better version of the character.

I like this movie, and the review is pretty good. However, there is one incredibly obvious plot hole that has always bothered me. If that road is a well known semi truck route, and it is common knowledge how dangerous it is, why doesn't anyone just put up a fucking fence? I think that we are well into survival of the fittest territory here.
@Cyborcat7 жыл бұрын
This video has been up for like 7 years and no one mentioned a fence until about a month ago, now there are suddenly three of you pointing it out. Starting to think you all work for the same fencing company and this is some weird advertising campaign =P In all seriousness, the story is an allegory to addiction. Building a fence would work about as well as putting a lock on the liquor cabinet of an alcoholic--it would just prolong the inevitable. Louis got "addicted" when he buried Church, and the fence was not gonna keep Church in.
@Cyborcat7 жыл бұрын
Besides, it's not as if Gage was constantly trying to run into the street. He did it *once* when they first moved there, and then presumably didn't do it again for several months until the kite-flying incident, which gave them ample time to let their guard down. Not to mention that Gage was a pretty well-behaved kid and not normally prone to getting away from them like that, so I can see how they wouldn't have thought about putting up a fence.
@thecowwarrior37 жыл бұрын
I didn't even read any of the other comments, that's funny three people all mentioned a fence. Like I said before, the fence thing has always bothered me. I happen to live right by a very high traffic highway, and I wouldn't dream of letting my dog outside without using a tie down or leash. I don't have any children, but if I did, a fence would go up before they took their first steps, no question. I see the point you're making about the addiction allegory, that Louis became "addicted" to trying to cheat death, but I still don't think that works in the story. If he had the common sense to put up a fence in the first place, his cat and kid would never have been ran over, and the "addiction" would never have begun. I know it's a nitpick, but little things like that can really take me out of a story. I suppose if I just assume the Creeds are all idiots, the story makes more sense - I just hate having to do that in order for the narrative to work. Seems like it could have been written in a more realistic, believable way. Oh well.
@mysticfishstudio38617 жыл бұрын
Characters not thinking of something or being stupid isn't a plot hole.
@thecowwarrior37 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but yes it is. The definition of the term "plot hole": "In fiction, a plot hole, plothole or plot error is a gap or inconsistency in a storyline that goes against the flow of logic established by the story's plot. " In the Pet Sematary world, people have been living alongside an extremely busy road/truck route, seemingly for generations. The fact that not a single person living there - over the span of a lot of years, when it has been the cause of many deaths - ever thought of putting up a fence is a pretty damn big absence of logic. It serves the story, but it is lazy storytelling. People in a serious story should act realistically, not like moronic plot devices. The horror genre is notorious for having characters act like complete idiots just to serve the plot.

you know it occurs to me that if they had just got a fance none of this movie would have happened the way it did. I mean if their that close to a main road with lots of huge trucks and what not speeding back and forth that the counsel or land lord would have put fances in the frount yards. and maybe some slow down signs for the road. so the real villan is a shitty city/town consle and or land lord whos surprised?

Rewatching this after seeing the crappy remake.
@Teatime77715 жыл бұрын
Rough Rambo the remake is not that bad. I liked it. I just wish the movie would show you the Wendigo rather than putting the creature in the shadows through the whole movie.
