I think Lord Randal is doing a fantastic job, and I wish him all the very best with it. It is going swimmingly, it seems. But I have to question one of his comments: he says he thinks the grasslands on his estate are not reverting to woodland immediately despite his rewilding programme, and he says this might explain why his ancestors established a base here, because they believed it would remain grassland, for some reason. Sorry, Randal, but that makes no sense to me. The land will become covered in trees in due course and the most likely explanation for the delay that you see is that your red deer are feeding on the tree seedlings, as these are more nutritious than grass. This is what is holding back the woodland regeneration on your estate. The deer density is too high, you need to bring it down a tad, or a lot, so the saplings can get ahead. Best of luck with that.
