I was 10 yrs old that day. I woke up after halftime because my dad did not want me to be awake all night. I started crying for missing most of the match, then I realized United was losing the cup, but he continuously said they will win, because they kept having luck (actually, United clearly lose 2 of their best midfielders Scholes and Kean, that's why Bayern apparently controlled the game, but if you remember the group stage, MU and Bayern were equal). He also asked me to see how United played. They attacked with no fears, with their blood boiled all the time. Then, things happened as they did. I had one of the best nights of my life. The game ended at 5AM Vietnam time, so I had about 1hour back to sleep. The feelings when you wake up in a beautiful summer morning, when your mom congratulated you because of the game, when you can see the news on TV. I miss that old time :( My father passed away 8 months ago. Whenever I rewatched this game, I just kept missing him, a lot.

Was there that night. 90 minutes of agony followed by three minutes of ecstasy. The whole United bench streaming on to the pitch after Ole scored was hilarious. In all the bedlam I didn't even know who'd scored the winner and had to ask another United supporter when we were leaving the stadium. There was also a brilliant celebration with the players all doing their party pieces in front of the supporters that went on for about an hour. Good times.

This was jaw-dropping. So was Liverpool's miracle in Istanbul. Aguero's goal (right after Dzeko's) to win the League was epic. So was Dortmund scoring twice in stoppage time to shock Malaga. They all are why you watch. But given the stakes and the suddenness, I do feel like this was the most gut-wrenching loss I've seen. In 2005, Milan had an hour to recover from blowing their 3-0 lead, and just couldn't get over the line. But Bayern Munich led all match long, the clock was ticking down, and they could TASTE being champions of Europe. I mean, just look at the players laying on the pitch. Absolutely gutted. At least for Bayern Munich, they won it all 2 years later. SAF's interview immediately afterward was priceless! :-)

Respected by small pockets of people, which change depending on where he's currently managing. After how he treated Eva Carneiro (physio at Chelsea), I have nothing but contempt for the man. If he never wins another trophy, it will be too soon. I hope he finishes his career coaching soon-to-be-relegated-again Bragança in the basement of Portuguese football, getting booed off the pitch after his last home game.

I was there ! I couldn't watch the match on video again until we won over the man utd in slightly similar way in the old trafford 2001! It's a great example of desire for man utd but an evidence that football is unfair, not because the goals scored in the last moments - it was within the match time anyway - but because the better team in that match lost in such a way. not saying this because I'm a Bayern fan but really we played better in that match with two balls on the post and the bar I felt that it wasn't going to be our night. But because the life is fair Bayern won the Bundesliga title in 2001 in the last moment of the season leaving Schalke in tears although Schalke were the better team in Bundesliga that season. 16 years after that crazy final in Barcelona we're here, the sadness isn't the same but the happiness last :)

@ArtemioVarela8 жыл бұрын
+markorevan this was better it was knockout, the germans played well all the game but they played bad 3 minutes and were out. Milan-Liverpool was a Jekyll and Hyde. Milan played well the first half but choked the rest of the game, they though they were champions already. Liverpool played a horrible first half but gained momentum through the second half and even though milan was playing poorly they could not finished them in regulation. and milan Choked again in penalty kicks. But the 1999 finals was knockout from manchester to Bayern, it was just brutal.
@njclondon20098 жыл бұрын
+Artemio Varela milan played pretty well through out I thought, aside from those crazy 10mins, I thought it was miracle that not only they came back from 3 down but they came back against such an exceptional team. Choked is a bit harsh, Dudek made 2 or 3 phenomenal saves before the shootout - including one from shevchenko that I still can't work out how he managed to keep out. But yeah, I agree, this match still tops it, it was even more dramatic in many respects - united were also getting played off the park for periods, but they still found a way to win it inside 90 (or 90+3 lol) and without needing a penalty shoot out. Plus it perfectly summed up the whole playing to the end spirit that united had under fergie.

Very gracious mate. At the time I said to myself no matter what happens after this I'm not bothered as I have seen the peak of football. For me it is the challenges overcome that year. Arsenal were exceptional at the time (best defense in Europe, they conceded 4 goals at home that year, ridiculous). The Utd Arsenal games were titanic and Utd only won the league on the last day (coming from behind). In the cup that year we beat Chelsea after a replay, Arsenal after a replay and two extra time, Liverpool, Shearer's Newcastle in the final and two other prem league teams. We had Barca and Bayern in our champs league GROUP (!!), beat Ronaldo's Inter Milan (I think first English team to avoid defeat in the San Siro for decades at the time), Zidane's Juve (unbeaten at home for years at the time) who were the top team in Europe at the time and that was before this final. Overcame the biggest obstacles that could be put in front of a team that year and with all out attacking football. Without hype it was a magical time. Have there been better club sides than that year's Utd, almost certainly yes. Has anyone overcome so much to reach the top? Not even close.

And thus 'Fergie Time' was born.

A year after this comment but Fergie Time has been around since 1993, six years before this match was played.

I wasn't old enough to remember this match but it is my favourite match due to the fact that united scored 2 goals in extra time not only to win the champions league, but the treble altogether. Brilliant stuff.

I was fortunate enough to have been in Barcelona and in all honesty I couldn't see us getting back in to the game, Bayern Munich were so resolute in defence but heart won it in the end and I believe we deserved to win the CL after the football played that season by Manchester United. An incredible night of emotion and drama!

WHAT?!! If you're going to bother watching sports, you watch until the bitter end. Spectacular comebacks happen. But they're never witnessed by fair-weather fans. Patriots trail Falcons, 28-3 in the Super Bowl...and win. Liverpool trail AC Milan, 3-0....and win. Reggie Miller scores 4,732 points in the final 10 seconds to beat the Knicks in the playoffs. Patrik Stefan botches a sure game-clinching, empty-net goal from 4 feet out with :12 left, and Edmonton goes back down the other way and scores the game-tying goal with :02 on the clock. The Phillies score 9 runs in the 9th inning to beat the Dodgers, 12-11. You stay/watch/listen until the final :00/gun/whistle/out....or why bother watching at all? Exhibit A for never abandoning a sporting event before it's over: 1988 World Series, Game 1. As TV camera's show Kirk Gibson's miraculous game-winning home run off of all-world relief pitcher Dennis Eckersley clear the right-field wall, check out the tail lights in the background of the fans that left early, assuming the Dodgers had lost the game.

Never ever turn a Manchester United game off before it’s finished. I know a guy who turned off the United 3-1 win over PSG in the 89th minute! He was gobsmacked when he saw we had scored.

MU played this final without two of their best players. MU captain Roy Keen and play maker Paul Scholes. The forces is certainly with MU.

Ricky Tan Yes such a tragedy Roy Keane (and scholes) were suspended for the final. Roy Keane was the heartbeat of that team and dragged them through in semi final in Turin.
