The Final Chapter of the Raylan Givens Justified Hat Saga

I just bought a Stetson Monterey in Fawn color and had it cut down to a 4inch brim and flattened. I now have a higher quality Raylon Givens hat. Fits and looks great.

Having worked as an assistant director on many action films and TV shows I can tell you that the hat with the 4 Xs that was seen by the camera probably belonged to a stunt double. I’m sure the star had a Baron’s hat himself, but stunt doubles would get cheaper copies of the same wardrobe and accessories. So, the 4X hat more than likely was a $125 Stetson while the “hero” hat was a $1200 Baron’s.

And also if you read the books Raylan wore a 6x open road and apparently that was Elmore Lenards biggest complaint with the show was that they gave Raylan the wrong hat

I believe that’s actually the hat Boone wears and that Raylan adopt after his is shot off. Raylan says something along the lines of “I tried it on and it fit”. It’s suppose to be a nod to Elmore’s intended hat choice for Raylan.

Everything you said in both videos made sense. If I chose the hat for the last scene where I rip out the liner (so the back hole can be easily seen) and punch two big holes through it, I would chose the $130 hat rather than the $1100 hat too. One thing I noticed in the first video was that in the scene where the buckle appeared to be on the wrong side of the hat, it appeared to be “mirrored” video rather than the hat being on backward. The buckle is still toward the front. If the hat was on backward, the buckle would have been toward the back. The mirrored video or reversed video is pretty common now a days. I see it a lot more on KZbin, but do see it on professional video too. It’s just a lot harder to spot. Thanks for your videos .

You also can see it in Season one first or second episode, he lays his hat down crown down on the table and you can read it on the inner hat band, it's the scene where they are talking about Ava shooting Boyds brother. I have the old Stetson Carson but mine is black and I had to trim the brim but it's the same shape as the Beron. Oh mine is a 6X

In the first season his dad mention clearly that the Raylan Givens hat is a Stetson. (Episode 5 13:43) So if in the script the hat is a Stetson I don't think the Baron is used that often and most of the time it is a Stetson with the decoration of the Baron.

Great update! I got the download about Justified City Primeval from the costume designer and she said his hat would be different from the past show but not the one at the end of the season.

Appreciate the research and that you got some first-hand knowledge. Now, I’m going to throw out an observation having seen the series a few times (did a lot of binging during the lockdown… lol). I cannot say which season, but I’m convinced Raylan switched to a smaller brim (businessman’s dimension) for several episodes. Might have been late Season 2 or Season 3. And it seemed to me that it was prevalent when he’d get dressed up in indoor scenes. I think they might have done this for improved lighting of Tim’s face. Anyway, if you are still in touch with your costume design contact, I’d love to know if I’m right… or was just drinking too much bourbon! Thanks for the videos! 👍👍👍 ~John in Ohio

I’ve thought the same thing myself. But they just said that the Barron hat is a 3&3/4 inch brim and the marshal and the San Angelo hat are 4 inch brims. Now 1/4 inch does not sound like much but it really is. Case in point I have a vented straw open road toast color and a Route 66 in mushroom the Route 66 has a 3 inch brim and in my personal opinion looks more like the Barron hat than it has a right too . But comparing the Route 66 to the straw open road that 1/4 of brim looks so much bigger than one would think.

I have two of the Stetson Carson Marshall hats and also a third one that is a 6X in black you can get the Stetson Marshall at the Stetson Resistol outlet in Garland Texas they still have a few left in the silver belly. Stetson Marshall I wear one and the other is on display in my man cave and the black one I also wear

That would explain why when I put on the hat and looked in the mirror i didn’t look like Raylan Givens lol. I cut 1/2 inch off the brim and flattened it a bit and I like the way it turned out. It was a Marshall

The Stetson San Angelo Collection 4X Wool Marshall can be bought in 2024 for $160 & it would definitely need the brim cut down to look like the Justified Hat, from it's original size to 3.5" brim. Then reshaped, that Stetson hat is large... Timothy is a slender man with a small head. I can only see his hat being custom cut to fit him. Or it would look like a real 10gal hat on him.

I love that green fedora and was wondering if you happen to know the model and maker of that hat. I have tried to find that out since the series ended with no luck. 8 weeks ago I finally started watching *Justified* and 6 Weeks ago I finished watching it. I found it to be one of those "well that didn't rock my world but I'm happy to have seen it". I'll try to do a little research and see what I can find. As discovered from my source in the Justified wardrobe department, the end credits of the movie may even give a clue.

Bourbon and Stetson hats. You are my kinda guy! I wear on occasion, a 100 year old Stetson that was my grandfather's. It sports an acorn style cavalry yellow cord, and a CSA wreath emblem. The CSA emblem and the cord were his fathers. A veteran of the 5th Texas Cavalry regiment in the War of Northern Aggression. And I'm sipping some Jim Beam as I type this. Salute!🍷

It was a classic hat but I don’t feel the urge to mimic someone else, your hat should be a reflection of your personality. Also Elmore Leonard created the character and he wore an open road but olyphant changed it.
