A pity 45156 was not preserved as for steam itself the 9fs were scheduled for withdawal in the mid 80s lol ,and the rebuilt southern pacifics from 86 on

It makes sense we needed to upgrade to diesel and modernize but it still hurts seeing those old Steam Locos go.

It was a bloody disgrace that they disposed of steam in that way as some of the locos got thrown on the scrap heap after less than 10 years, 92220 Evening Star for example only had a working life of 5 years before being withdrawn. Had they run it for a minimum of 30 years then it would've remained in traffic until around the 1990's, with most of the BR standards had they got the same chance as the older pre grouping locos they could've lasted until the late 1990's or even into the early 2000's. But nobody back then though even thought that preservation would be such a big thing and that 3 years later in 1971 steam would return to the BR network. Nobody would've even thought we would have ever built a brand new steam engine or steam engines either, but with what they did creating Tornado the talent and skill to build these things still exists. We just need the younger generation to take over from those who are ageing and reaching retirement.

Really interesting video. Shame such much has been lost but at least we have quite a few black 5s with us still

Flying Scotsman was the only one allowed to run on British railways after pegler persuaded British railways to allow the engine to run on mainline including the non stop kings cross to Edinburgh

It was indeed a real shame that they killed off steam era in the 1960's as those engines had many more years left to give. The BR standards some of which had only been in service for 6 years while others managed better by getting over 10 years, 92220 only ran in service for 5 years.

A harsh ending to steam on the railways of Britain as they threw away good locos in favour of diesel and electric locomotives. However preservation now makes up for it.

Scrapped is not one of my favorite words! How many of these engines were scrapped?
@MasterMoyle3 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say how many were scrapped but with the locos in the video. The black 5's there were 842 engines built but only 18 survive. The standard 5's had 172 engines built but only 5 are preserved and with the Britannia's shown in the video of the 55 engines just 2 are left (70013 Oliver Cromwell shown in the video is preserved) the other engine being the prototype Britannia engine no 70000 Britannia. The 8F's had 852 engines built but only 14 are known to survive (and I say known because not all of the 14 surviving 8F's are based in the UK as they were also built for use outside of the UK in country's like Turkey and Egypt).

53 years by this august which is shocking.

ordinary music overriding the 'music' of the steam locos the reason for the video. Very bizarre

No offense, but it's possible that it was originally a silent film, so it'd make more sense to have a 'soundtrack' to back up the footage
