PURE is the word tat come to mind with that kind of system. With complex setups your are walking on egg shells and EQ can really throw the balance out and break overall cohesion. I got to test this issue on a fiio iem and felt so disappointed that I returned the purchase after the first week of painful listening. But thankfully not all composites render badly.

Watching this on my own A8000 right now... I recommend going with a balanced cable for this pair. In comparison with other similar-priced IEMs, IER-Z1R actually has a deeper base (try Interstellar's Mountains with this) and even wider sound stage, but the vocal is a bit pushed back and highs not as bright/sharp; however, still extraordinary on its own terms. I'd think you'd enjoy comparing the A8000 with the IER-Z1R. Anyway, thanks, Josh, for another great review.

Final E5000 and Periodic Audio BE are my current favorite IEMs. Of course they are in the below $300 range. I think you should list the Final E5000 in your list of links at Amazon as they are the top of the line of the Final E series and they are superb (superior to E4000 which I also own). They even come with a similar case and a cable that looks identical to the A8000 cable in your video. It would be interesting to see a comparison of these with the A8000 to see how much difference there is. I do consider the E5000 one of the best IEM in the under $1000 range as long as you can drive them with something decent because of their 92db sensitivity (I have to trick my LG V-40 phone into high gain mode to give these proper power). As far as the Periodic Audio BE it has single dynamic Beryllium drivers that produce that forward "holographic" sound stage (a term I have heard used by a couple of reviewers) that you mention on the A8000. The PA BE is not as detailed as the E5000 but it has that something that makes you be immersed in a space with the music. I also have the more expensive Periodic Audio Carbons that are more detailed than the BEs but lack that something that the Berylliums have. Another Beryllium headphone that I own is the Campfire Cascade over the ear. With the XL pads it also has that immersive sound stage with great detail and imaging. Now, if they could only reduce the bass by about 5db that headphone would be nearly perfect. The ZMF Verite line (~$2,500) over the ear headphones also use Beryllium drivers and are outstanding (only listened to these from a friend that owns the open back version). I am starting to see a trend here with Beryllium dynamic drivers that sound really good, at least to my ears.
