In 1968 American Olympic lifter did a 390lb (about 177kg) strict military press. No knee flex and no back bend. He weighed around 110 kg. The press was eventually removed from Olympic lifting for various reasons.

Serge Redding did 502lbs. The reason they removed it, was because the guys were cheating it so hard, it eventually became a second clean and jerk for some guys.

@@gotzvonunentberlichingen1452 exactly. Serge was amazing. He was under 5’8. Very athletic and powerful. Bill March won the Mr Universe that night after the National Championships when he did the strict Press. It was so impressive because everyone else did the back bend with some knee kick. The back bend was done at the sticking point. Very clever. The press was too hard to officiate. The contests were so long with 3 lifts that it was good to remove the press anyway. As they would have the physique contest after the lifting. A long day for the audience. Thanks for reminding about Serge Redding. He was competitive with the Great Russsian lifter Vasily Ivanovich Alekseyev , who later became the national coach for the Russian team. Amazing men of their era as they did not have the exercise science and only a few anabolics. Thanks again

not sure what's the sciece behind this but after doing years of presses I find that wider grip actually prevents you from using leg strength. When you have a closer grip, the feet comes along more naturally to the lift. Then, when I want to strict press without legs, I take wider grip but cannot lift as heavy, obviously.
