My supervisor at work insists that Dominicans are black or refers to me as "simply a brown black person," How should I approach someone lacking knowledge about the Dominican Republic when they make these remarks? I feel very offended.

Many North Americans (mainly AA or ethno centrics) insist that we are black, because notion of Color and Race in America, which is a North American construct. Outside of the U.S. ethnic groups do not associate nor identify Ethnic idenity with skin color. Period. Many refuse to accept this fact. The way to respond: Sir/ma'am I am ethnically Dominican. My identity is being Dominican. End of story. Don't entertain someone ignorance or lack of respect on your ethnic idenity. Show your intelligence.

@rubirose196 to respond first to your second question. If you are referring to AAs the ones who are ethnocentric in their perspective. Race or ethnic groups and colorism are North American constructs. Outside of North America (U.S.) other ethnic groups do not connect skin color with ethnic identity.

An ethnic group is a group of people who share common characteristics that distinguish them from other groups, such as a common language, nationality, religion, or culture. Race is a social construct that groups people based on physical characteristics, social factors, and cultural backgrounds. It's often used to divide people into hierarchies, with some groups being marginalized across nations and regions.
