The Final One

At long long last here we have the final episode in this series. In this one I look at why the speedo is under reading and also why the panel illumination lights do not work.
At this moment in time I do not have any more jobs that need doing on the car. I'm sure as time moves on various things will go wrong and more faults will be discovered, but for now the series is finally finished...YIPPEE
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.

Apologies if people thought I was leaving KZbin, just to clarify this is the final one in the 2 year series of Rolls-Royce videos, hence the RR logo in the thumbnail. I have no intention to leave KZbin. I've been looking at items for another project/series and so far the list is as follows...Vespa....2004 Mini Cooper JCW.... 1999 Mercedes 320 or 500SL...Mazda Bongo Campervan....Bentley Continental GT. If I could choose then I would like an older mini or the original Fiat 500, but so many classic cars are now unaffordable. Realistically the purchase price has to be £8k max, but cheaper at the mo is better for me as I have a tax bill coming at the end of July. Any ideas please please please add them under here, no matter how wacky the idea, please share. The next project doesn't even have to be a motor vehicle. I'm open to any suggestions. Thank you to everyone that helped on this series, now that it is over I have only fond memories that will grow fonder over time. Thank you!

I doubt I'd be the only one that would love to see you do an old Mini ( _The Italian Job_ vintage would be great, but I know you're right about the cost of classics) - it'd be a nice counterpoint to the Rolls-Royce, being right at the other end of cost and luxury of British cars, but still classic and desirable. And mechanically it'd be much simpler, so perhaps its challenges would be rather different. (Though whatever you pick, I'll watch the series.)

Watched everyone of Vince’s fabulous rolls Royce videos. My dad worked as a tool maker for Rolls and he had such a special affection for them. It was so pleasing to see how honest he did all of this. Nice work Vine! Yeah 2N3055 is a real classic. I used many of them. Sometimes 36 in a stage power amplifier but also in adjustable power supplies. So they are dirt cheap, versatile and powerfull. But now you can enjoy that nice car. And I can imagine that getting to this result is satisfying. Great job and ENJOY!

Hi Vince, Enjoy your videos greatly. Noticed in one of them you mention how smooth and well a yellow ratchet screwdriver works, not sure how you came to own that screwdriver, however, I have that screwdriver in my toolbox. It is the most expensive driver in the world, rightly so because it is extremely well engineered by a specialist company in America. You may have noticed that to change direction of ratchet grab the direction ring l turns in same direction as grab is required and is intuitive not like most ratchet drivers which have the grab ring turn in the opposite direction which is always confusing. Hope I have not bored you to death on this detail, it's just I have great pleasure using this driver which is very well thought out. Regards. Adam.

Morning Vince the rolls looks great I'm glad you powered through and didn't give up :) just a thought on the speedo issue why don't you approach your local MOT centre or garage to see if you can use their rolling road, you will be able to get a more accurate setup. What about a defender you can pick up one of those up for under 8k and easy to work on.

Brilliant video again!!! Amazing work on the dimming fix =D Regards the speedo - My guess is those caps have aged (high ESR) and that's what has knocked out the calibration! It might drift further, and might drift depending on temperature! The way that sender works (I think), is the diode rectifies the AC into DC pulses, the transistor amplifies it I think.

Hi Vince, I was late coming to the RR videos but have binged 2 or 3 a day and have only just watched this final one. I love your editing and honesty in all of these having made plenty of mistakes along the way also. The two things I was hoping to see were the gear indicator back with its green bulb covers and a spruce up of the rocker covers so the Rolls Royce stood out as well as it does on the air intake. Looking forward to seeing whatever you decide to do next.

This series has been brilliant, you started with little knowledge and look at what you’ve learned, I’m really going to miss it. Me and my brother bought a 35 year old Honda Goldwing that had been stripped down by its owner and left for a number of years and he couldn’t face trying to rebuild it, we had no motorcycle experience (although we were quite knowledgeable of 60s Lambrettas) but within 6 months we had it back together with a fresh MOT it was great fun😊

tip, when doing gauges before pulling the needle put a square of painters tape under and move the needle all the way that direction then draw a line so when you put needle back its in the same spot

Good job, Vince. My first thought with the speedo was to replace the ageing capacitors. They could well be leaking DC to ground. To experiment you could replace them then if you find you need to recalibrate afterwards you'll know that was the problem.

Yes that’s true, those axial (probably philips or bc components) caps are almost every time low on capacity, also used a lot in philips based cd players.

I've got to get my dash dials out as I bought a handy dandy stainless steel repair piece for my Reliant's dashboard which being plastic has all but disintegrated through uv and cold hot cycles, just pull the dials out, coat the remaining plastic with epoxy and bond the stainless bit in place then refit dials and switches to the metal and job done :) Quite funny my main speedo dial is exact size of yours 'cept only has 1 "R" although thinking about it I could use RR... I did toy with fitting a Jag, Bentley or RR rad grille on front of mine and frenching the fibreglass to make it look good, I also did find my old MK2 Fiesta XR2 bodykit I was toying in turning mine into a XR 1/2 with the lary red paint and modded bodykit but now its going to be the full rust paint with instead of Trotter's mine is going to say "Trigger's Trusty Brooms" on the only Reliant that rusted... :P

Hi vince. Do you remember the old dynamos that used to turn against your bike tyre and produce electricity that powered your bike lights? Over years the magnets would loose power which meant that for the same rotational speed, they would produce a lower voltage resulting in dimmer lights. The 'gizmo' connected to your gear box is essentially the same idea. Over the many years the magnetic field has begun to fade thus the voltage applied to your speedo at any given speed has reduced. This has resulted in your low speed reading. The potentiometer in the diel that you adjusted to tune the speedo reading just adjusts the resistance in the circuit to take this into account. A fine solution. Remember, perminent magnets weren't really a thing all the way back then. On the plus side, your milige reading should be accurate as this is a measure of the frequency of the signal emmited which will be independent of the voltage strength. Love your work.

Bravo for taking on this Rolls Royce and giving it a second chance at life. Given your skills, I would definitely jump on that Fiat 500 you've been dreaming about! I enjoy the basic, post-WWII economy cars from Italy. Those folks knew how to extract every bit of space, utility, and economy from those machines. Somehow...they even imbued them with that magically endearing, cheeky style. Given the way the world is going and the way governments...um...are...combined with your skill of video exposition, I would turn said Fiat 500 into an opportunity to create YEARS of KZbin content. In your shoes, I'd want to obtain one of those wonderful EV conversion kits that they make in the UK and fit it into some lovely Fiat 500. Surely, there are HUNDREDS of KZbin shows you could make with THAT project. I'm certain I'd enjoy any automotive project you put your hand to. LED replacement bulbs of the *proper* size are available- something the previous owner may not have had available at the time. If you’re so inclined to do so in the future, you could always get direct LED replacements for the dash that are green/blue to mimic the original color with the diffusers while being significantly brighter. I had a 240DL Volvo that I swapped to LEDs about 15 years ago and it worked wonderfully. I was able to see the cluster at night AND maintain the original green color.

I did the same as you suggested. There was a much brighter range when dimming the Panel Lights. I could barely see the High Beam Light, and the LEDs fixed this issue.

Hi Vince, if you have a Satnav it should give you your speed from GPS and help with calibration I know our TomTom gives a speed readout. Great series and you've done a cracking job on the roller.
