After several days in Ely watching trains, we arrive at the somewhat sad final run of Nevada Northern #40 before its' being torn down and inspected and rebuilt.
For the final run they recreated the "Steptoe Valley Flyer", the passenger train that ran north every day to Cobre and the interchange with the Southern Pacific. The Consist is chair car #5 and Baggage express #20, the only original passenger cars still running on the Nevada Northern.
Because of the pandemic few seats could be sold, be we were lucky to bag a pair. There were 2 run-buys as part of the trip to Keystone Junction.

That was enjoyable and interesting seeing the inside if the seat car was great. All the little things like the woodwork just add to the feeling of stepping back in time. In the early 60s I remember Great Northern having daily passenger service from Blaine at the Canadian border south to Bellingham and I'm sure beyond. One of our neighbors use to take the train to Bellingham daily for work. He worked a few blocks from the station in Bellingham. I remember him grumbling when GN planed to stop this service. After that it was just freight service. Somewhere in there Amtrak came into being but it was a limited schedule. Watching your videos of things like this bring up long forgotten childhood memories... and a trip back in time for a brief moment. Thank you for sharing this with us.

@@ToyManTelevision the passenger service was a couple times a day run as I remember. At the time there was no transit bus service from Bellingham to Blaine. There was Greyhound but it at odd hours. Amtrak still has passenger service from Seattle to Vancouver B.C. but it's once or twice a week I remember. It's not a daily run.

This video was amazing! I love how you two were able to get out and enjoy your time with the last run of No. 40 before the 15 year rebuild. Like all great machines, locomotives need TLC too. It'll be well worth the wait to see No. 40 running in two years again. I have to compliment the railroad company for allowing your photo op by a run by. That's something that is not usually heard of, especially with railroads. Thank you for another great video! I loved how this one was dedicated to the final run of No. 40 before it's rebuild. Cheers.

Hi Robert! Yeah this was so much fun. I’m in the middle of this stupid pandemic, a chance to get out of the house and in fact in this case get out of town. We’re sort of really down at this point because with the virus taking off again we’re really staying in. So our next few shows at least will just be us staying in! So I’m trying to learn how to dance so we’ve got something interesting to showto show

They are pressure kerosene lamps, you can see a vertical cylinder on either side with a pump handle at the top of each. The larger cylinders hold the kerosene. You pump pressure into the system, it then draws kerosene vapour out of the larger cylinders piped up to the lamp head, where it’s lit. Great video as usual you guys.

I so hope they go back to the green boiler jacket. When this thing was re-built in the 1930s it had an American iron green boiler jacket. And when they first started running it here that was the same jacket that it had on it but then they painted it as it was so hard to maintain and they simply painted it black. Now I know they’re not gonna go back to a bare metal boiler jacket. But if they painted a dark dark green that would be really neat

Next year, you can make he journey over to Orbisonia / Rock Hill Furnace PA...where the EBT's new owners are getting #16 ready for tourist operations, and doing a rebuild of #14. The 16 has been moved outside for events as a large heavy object..but their engineering crew went over the 5 narrow gauge steamers there (12, 14, 15, 16 and 17) and found 14 and 16 in better shape than the rest. The line shut down in 1956, so that is when everything ground to a halt.. The line got purchased by Kovalchick Salvage... And Mr K went in to the round house, and promised them they would run again. 12, 14, 15, and 17 were used from 1960-roughly 2000....12 was effectively worn out, so that was parked in the 90's as I remember. 14 and 15 were the "normal" engines used during most of tourist time.. but flue time on 14 (after rebuilding in the 70's ???) so it got parked, and 15 repaired and reflued..... Then parked in the early 2000's...

Did you notice on the layout section of Roy Smith’s Dispatch that there was a picture of Engine 40 in front of a model of the Ely depot? Did you see my question about N scale switch stands? Good video. Glad there are people like you and Karyn that record these events for the future.

No we saw those models. Pretty darn nice. The first day we were there they were set up on the table outside the depot. The guy who had built them with their showing them to people. Later they were on display in the engine shop

Are the scenic railroads required to put an ETD on their trains?
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 4 жыл бұрын
Not in this case. In large part because they have a conductor in the rear car. And they can spot for the locomotive engineer when they’re backing up. But moreover in this case there’s only ever one train on the line at any one time. And that reduces the hazards a lot

@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. They have a tremendous amount of track as you saw but they only use two parts of it. The lineup Robinson Canyon to Keystone and the line up the valley as far as McGill on the old Highline that used to feed the upper part of the mill. They’re not using the old Main line at all

Hi. Actually nope. And that Baldwin is so robust. An Engeneer back in about 1920 made up 2 hours with the train by pushing it to over 90 mph!! And it had no problems.
