You know, I think my favorite thing about Missouri Star quilt videos is the way they respect different methods and remind us that there is no "right" way. When I first started quilting in the 80s it was full of rules you had to follow. I love the way you remind us that it is OK if you are not perfect. Thank you for that. As a perfectionist, your frequent reminders that it doesn't have to be perfect takes any stress out of quilting and reminds me that it is pure joy. You guys are awesome!

Okay, Natalie is a new found gem for me! She has her moms genes! She is calm, relaxed, and real about the journey--it’s not about perfection it’s about accomplishing goals, taking baby steps, getting better in time, and mostly enjoying the process! I teach sewing and quilting in my private studio and I’m always looking for new and different ways to achieve great results! I love this painters tape technique! I tell my students not to worry about small stitch irregularities -concern yourself with the overall beauty with your creation! Hugs to Natalie for clear, honest, and great teaching instruction and advice! I’ll be following her!❤️✂️🧵

Thank you so much for doing these Natalie! I love all of the elaborate quilting designs but I appreciate that you took the time to show us the basics of home machine quilting. I feel like it gets overlooked because it’s not the “cool kid” long-arm quilters are. 😄 My budget doesn’t allow for sending my quilt off or buying special tools and it’s great that you speak to that!
@howbethdoesit56954 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I cannot justify 15k or even 5k for a long arm machine, no matter how many quilts I make. What I do...has to do. And I'm ok with that!

I've tried using my walking foot, FM, and I always end up at my local favorite Current River Fabric Store here in Doniphan, Missouri. They are reasonable in price and of all the many sizes I piece, they do an exceptional job.

I have use painters tape, but instead of using a new piece of tape each time you can reuse the same pieces of tape over and over to go the other direction etc.
@joshuaharper3724 жыл бұрын
I used painter's tape for a complicated repeating curved design: first overlapping several pieces to make a big "piece", then drawing the outline of my curved design and cutting it out, then positioning it on the quilt to quilt the outline. (I had some negative space in the center of a quilt that I quilted with a double wedding ring design.)

I made a quilt for my moms bday that was safari animal print 10" hexis. I didn't have time to send it to a quilter so using my featherweight, I ended up making a zebra stripe stitch in each hexi. I was so happy with how it turned out because I didn't need to have dropped feed dogs, lots of experience and the lines didn't have to be perfectly straight. I live that Natalie is giving us so many n options. Quilts that go to a long armed are beautiful but there is also a lot if satisfaction when we can say we did everything on the quilt ourselves. Thank you Natalie! 😊

It really is quilter's choice. I swear by my walking foot because it comes with an adjustable guide I can use to stitch lines equidistant by aligning the guide with each previous line. I would never be able to get painter's tape straight! I also agree that the density of quilting goes with the use. Thanks again Natalie, for keeping things simple. So many UFO's will get finished this holiday season.

For stitch-in-the-ditch, just like for garment sewing, it's better to have thread a bit darker than a bit lighter. Sometimes having the ditch stitching a few shades darker actually helps give a "shadow" effect in the ditch.

I did free-motion quilting of all kinds for more than 30 years on several different home machines, usually the cheapest machine I could get on sale from Sears. Drop or cover feed, and set the stitch length to 0, and adjust the foot pressure to just barely skim the top of the quilt. Most of the time I didn't even have a darning or quilting foot. For straight-line quilting, use a walking foot, and just like driving, focus ahead of the needle. Keep it slow and steady; if that is a problem just try hand-quilting for a while, that makes any kind of machine quilting seem quite speedy.

Another great video! I have a favorite straight line stitch pattern on my Bernina. But it's a wavy line that I can vary the width of the wave to suit. I use it exactly as Natalie did. I have also used specialty stitches that are in my machine instead of just a straight stitch. But it's amazing how great just the plain straight stitch looks all by itself. Natalie's video shows that sometimes less truly is more. Thank you, Natalie! Can't wait to see what you show us next.
