---------------------------------
Imagine being the last heiress of an "old money" family dynasty that has spanned more than a half-century. On the surface, it appears to be a dream life filled with magnificent balls, exclusive gatherings, and sprawling estates decked out in the utmost luxury.
However, beneath the shimmer of endless festivities and priceless heirlooms often lies a tangled web of personal sorrows and sensational scandals.
This was precisely the case for Gloria Vanderbilt, an heiress of the storied American Vanderbilts, born in the middle of the Roaring Twenties.
Gloria’s life, though rich in promise, was equally marked by trials that tested her strength and resilience.
From a young age, she faced the glaring spotlight during a bitterly fought and highly publicized custody battle, earning her the heartrending title of "poor little rich girl"-a label that struck the core of the complexities of her opulent yet turbulent life.
The challenges didn’t stop there; Gloria’s heart was destined to be a battleground for love and loss.
She experienced whirlwind romances with iconic figures like Howard Hughes and Frank Sinatra and weathered four tumultuous marriages, with each relationship adding a chapter of hope tangled with heartache, playing out in the full view of an ever-watchful public eye.
But Gloria was more than a mere heiress or a fixture in society columns; she was a creative powerhouse who reshaped the fashion landscape.
With a visionary mind, she transformed a humble pair of jeans into high fashion, creating a designer denim line that catapulted her name into a multi-million dollar brand.
Her creative spirit soared beyond fashion as she poured her passion into painting, writing novels and memoirs, and even crafting an erotic novel in her 80s.
From the very start, Gloria Vanderbilt's life was set against a backdrop of lavish wealth and high society drama.
Born to Reginald Claypool Vanderbilt and his young bride Gloria Morgan, "Little Gloria" entered a world where her last name carried the weight of American royalty. Reginald, a great-grandson of the legendary Cornelius Vanderbilt, inherited a fortune but his life was marked by excessive spending and personal struggles.
His early death from cirrhosis, merely 15 months after his daughter's birth, left young Gloria without a father and plunged her family into financial uncertainty.
Gloria’s mother, instead of focusing on her daughter’s well-being, chose a life of luxury and travel, often leaving Gloria in the care of others.
This led to a highly publicized custody battle initiated by her aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who viewed Gloria Morgan as a neglectful mother.
The custody battle, dubbed "the trial of the century," was a public spectacle that laid bare the private lives of the Vanderbilt family, portraying Gloria Morgan as an unfit mother and eventually resulting in Gloria Whitney gaining custody of young Gloria.
Throughout her life, Gloria Vanderbilt chased love and faced numerous personal trials.
Her first marriage at the age of 17 to Hollywood agent Pat DeCicco was abusive and ended in divorce.
She then married Leopold Stokowski, with whom she had two sons but the marriage was strained by Stokowski’s controlling nature. Her next relationships included a fleeting affair with Frank Sinatra and a quick marriage to Sidney Lumet, which also ended in divorce.
However, it was her fourth marriage to Wyatt Cooper that brought her a semblance of stability; they had two sons, and this period was one of relative happiness until Cooper's untimely death in 1978. Tragedy struck again when her son Carter died from a fall, a devastating event that profoundly affected her.
Despite these challenges, Gloria thrived as a creative force in the fashion industry, turning her designer jeans line into a huge success.
Her later years were marked by continued artistic endeavors, including writing and painting, even as she faced financial difficulties and battled stomach cancer, which eventually claimed her life in 2019.
Gloria Vanderbilt's life story is a poignant reminder of the complexities that often lie beneath the surface of a seemingly glamorous existence, marked by resilience, creativity, and the enduring power of family bonds.

Carter Cooper didn’t fall from her apartment balcony. He jumped. I saw a documentary that Anderson Cooper made about her before she died and she spoke about it. She was sitting on the terrace, and he came out, climbed up on the balcony and jumped before she could do anything. How horrible to see.

The intergenerational trauma of wealthy families is so often minimized in contrast to the way society views other forms of oppression. We all need compassion. I’d be curious to learn more about the Bouvier family. Jackie O is reportedly my sixth aunt; the lineage being split by way of one of her cousins who’d gambled away his father’s estate. Mental illness runs on my father’s side so I’ve always been curious about our connection to Big and Little Edie. My grandfather was Aldege Bouvier, a talented musician who raised his first family in poverty.

That trauma breaks my heart and is exactly why we should all be advocating to compassionately reappropriate all that troublesome dynastic wealth. Forcing a modern capitalist class society upon these poor families is simply sadistic -- no one asked to be born into their family you know?
