As a dad with 7 kids, 3 wives, and 9 jobs, I get 13 seconds per week to play games. I spend that 13 seconds relaxing and afk farming lv 55 grawls in Guild Wars 2 and I don’t appreciate this toxic community trying to take that experience away from me.

Honestly it ruins my immersion of the game whenever I come up to a bunch of afk farmers, especially if they are in a spot that is common to go across. I don't have much time to play the game myself as I indulge myself in other hobbies/games, but when I come back and I want / need something I make sure I really really need it / want it before I spend my gems to convert to gold and buy the things I would want / need. AFK farmers just make the game feel in the dying stage due. But I am also of the opinion that if it is not forbidden abuse it, so eh I am conflicted on the topic.

I agree with everything you said. But I'd make a difference here. AFK bots should be fought hard by Anet. Bots don't need human interaction and if Anet don't fight them, eventually, and if the game becomes worth enough for gold sellers to come back in mass, will start running around killing everything they come across. An AFK farmer (to me) is a different thing. They are players leaving their alt account logged in while playing their main and checking them, every now and then, to re log them manually if they get disconected. Another point that afk farmers cannot hurt other players is that they are standing in one place and if you come across one of them you can tag and get loot from the same mobs. Not having kill stealing is fundamental to make afk farming mostly inoffensive. But watch out for bots. If the game grows in population, bot makers will create bots that can run around or participate in open world events, that'd be dangerous for the comunity.

I tried to lead Palawadan yesterday bringing 30 players into the map. The map filled very quickly and people couldn't join my map. You might not be able to see them, but they do impact the average player and action needs to be taken.

I'm less concerned about afk farmers farming materials and more concerned about afk farming those crystal balls from map rewards... which then gets spent on materials and that has to hurt the economy. Less materials, more expensive materials, 0 return of materials. As an experienced player, my farming methods get dwarfed by someone afk farming who spends 0 effort while I'm doing all the hard work. Now it's not new players who are driven away from the game, but veteran players.

There is a reason why daily fractals and weekly chest gold rewards are limited. Only outputting gold will ruin the economy. There has to be a balance of gold income from materials and gold. Gold is there to substitute the materials you lack, not completely make up every material you lack. Afk farmers who only farm those 30s crystal balls ruin this balance. 17:38 this is what I'm talking about. Crystalline ball afk farmers are not sellers, they are only buyers.

People just want to blow this out of proportion. AFK in a meta hurts the game more. I have play GW2 for 10 years, things are working fine, AFK farm does no harm, they actually help with the T3/T4 resources which are not obtainable unless you go and specially farm them. Farming anything is boring. Just play the game and enjoy, move on. There is so many things to do. Just stay away from reddit and you have a nicer time.

Also a portion of new players have played other MMOs that have a far bigger bot problem. Big example is Runescape and that game pretty much learned to coexist with bots. Most people aren't gonna quit just cause they see a few AFK farmers.

A few weeks ago I started to play on a fresh account and the very little inventory space forced me to open all bags and sell/mail everything. Okay... I knew that even normal playing gave you a lot of profit but I was not prepared for this insane amount.... even through I'm pretty much a slacker if compared to Mr. Teapot. 😅Knowing this I doubt afk famerns earn anything close to a significant amount to influence the economy compared to normal players. As a player with huge inventory/material storage space it's easy to miss the amount of profit you are actually earning when everything is just getting stored while your gold doesn't seem to go up. Sure, then you may get the impression afk farming is more profitable than it actually is...🤷‍♀

afk farming is 100% profit. You are considered as not playing active. They are afk while working from home or whatever. Once in a while they come and see if all is fine and continue to do the dayjob. by the time you come home from work, he's already home. Earned some afk gold while you didn't.

You laid out a reasoned argument against all the complaining. My main complaint against farmers is that they can take up player slots on maps that could otherwise go to actual players of the content. I suppose the AFK farmer would simply say that they are playing the content appropriately, seeing as their activity falls within the EULA guidelines. I don't like farmers, but it's hard to argue against activity that ANET tacitly condones.

the megaserver system seems to alleviate any concerns with "taking up map slots." If I wanted to do a Lake Doric meta and couldnt get in, id get into an overflow map, tag up, and then ferry people in. I know not everyone can or will tag up, but it does seem to be that getting people into a map that is that popular isnt super difficult but YMMV

I personally don't see anything wrong with AFK farming. But note that AFK farming by a single player is not the same as a bot farm. That being said, I'm over 600 hours in and haven't ever seen any definite proof of bot farming. I doubt it drives away anyone, nor do I think it has a substantial impact on the community or economy.

I remember the 55hp monk in GW1. I remember stumbling on a farm where there were troves of these bots. They were terrible bots making ridiculous movements that clearly where not natural. This stream of bots continued in a constant precise unstopping flow. I reported it and don't remember anything happening. I didn't quit the game back then. Recently i saw some necro afk bots. I didn't even bother to report them this time, though their numbers were not obnoxious. I have seen maybe 10 afk bots in GW2. In GW1, I bet it was hundreds. I think anet is doing a good job with the game in general. The economy is robust, I don't think the numbers you discussed would make a dent.

The problem I see is that each map works as an instance that you cannot simply just change to a different instance until there is a reset or if the game overlords just transfer you to a better instance of that same map. When you get trapped inside an instance with so many bots, you miss all group content that takes hours for it to happen again. Thos, not only you miss the experience of that map, but also, getting the achievments is almost impossible because now it relies on if you are lucky enough to get a nice instance each time the event is active. I gave up on so many maps because they were dead, full of afk players either just standing there or just standing there with pets around them. I would have loved to experience those events at least once but I guess I'm late to the party. It is an afk farm now and people know that so they gave up on them too. If they weren't instances then maybe I wouldn't care but it feels like a literal trap, a whole event that I have been waiting for, wasted, because the map, even tho it's full, it is also dead.

If the instance youre in isnt full, more people will join to complete the event. If the instance is full, there will be a new instance soon, so you join the squad and transfer instances.

Blame Gen 3 legendaries on that one. How many legendaries coming out at once and how those legendaries are made effect trophy prices. Prices went up significantly when Shining Blade, Sharur and Aurora came out at the same time and maintained. During Ice Brood Saga with no legendaries coming out, those prices fell. EoD flattened them out more. It also doesn't help that trophy shipments are easier to purchase with every content update.

I think one important point to mention if we're demanding ANet take action rather than simply commiserating in forums is false positives and collateral damage. Especially a new player probably won't notice the bots standing in a remote corner somewhere but they sure as hell *will* notice if they get banned for "botting" after leaving their game running over lunch on an MM necro! Likewise most skill, UI or mechanics reworks attempting to counteract afk farming will probably degrade quality of life for legit players a fair bit before they become even marginally effective, and the simple countermeasures become more susceptible to abuse the less paid manpower is invested. Quite frankly I'd rather play the content I enjoy in an economy so broken we might as well be getting exclusively account-bound loot than risk getting banned because some unpaid intern or asshole streamer and their 11 viewers decided I shouldn't be playing the game at all.

AFK bots? I don't know what server you're on or NA or EU, but I'm guessing NA due to your accent, but probably close to 100% of all AFK Farmers I run into in the last year have been real people just playing the necro and mechanist spawns. We tend to have fun with them because they are often in an area where there is a trail with a meta or an event and it's a lot of fun kiting the mobs into them. Anet knows about these people and I've actually seen Anet move these players a distance away from where they were sitting and watch to see if they moved back to where they were farming. If they don't, then they get a short-term ban or a long-term ban or a warning or whatever. If they do move back then it shows that they were actually aware of their character and the GM moves along.

Hah! Well done. I'm actually more fed up with the whiners than the actual afk farmers. While I never used the logic that you did, I have always been convinced that this group of folks did not impact the individual gamer at all. This belief mainly came from never ending up with significant amounts of the materials that were being farmed during normal gameplay. While I do believe it is a bad look, I also believe that folks doing "proper" (i.e. not botting) afk farming are also experiencing the game in a way that gives them pleasure which is what we all strive to do. I can tell i only met afk farmers in LW3 and LW4 maps. Sometimes there were a large group of 30-50 farmers in 1 place, like on a lake doric crossroad. They actually killed a champion that tried to move through them. So i can add that afk farmers not only get some materials, they farm volatile magic, unbound magic and spirit shard. But it seems the number of bots is a bit lower now then it was a year ago. Seems some players just farmed all they wanted with bots and now just stoped running them...

Very good video! Goodd explained arguments and counter arguments! The only thing that I think it could be missing is the difficulty of removing bots in mmos, it seems like even the most succesful mmos in the market like lost ark and wow have problems with this so trying to eliminate bots is way harder to do than simply getting more sinks for materials / gold so the bots that will forever exist just dont matter as much. Also the places where the bots farm are usually very hard to notice cause those maps are dead usually so as long as that keeps being the case or anet makes it so its more profitable to bot farm even in deader maps we should be ok with the perception of the bots.

I was completely correct of course , the bot population got obliterated overnight. Fact is most bots were totally invisible, the main bot operation is and always has been teleporting under the map and gathering materials + map completion. There are some bot operations coming back actually but it's nothing compared to what it was.

I remember roughly half a year ago as a returning player I was progressing S4 and then Domain of Kourna happened. I think anyone who's ever been to that inquest dungeon area instantly would have a spark of what I'm talking about. It's like stepping into a pit full of swarming cockroaches or rats. You can't make two steps and not stumbling across yet another one of those afk bots. Utterly disgusting feeling. But to be fair, they were primarily there due to the absurd amount of turret parts required for an achievement. At least that's my take on it.

The more afk farmers the less profit. It's already negligible to afk farm given the cost of electricity just to grab 2-3g per hour.

Here is a good way to think about that question: AFK farms kill monsters, get loot, and then sell the loot. They funnel the money to their real account and then spend gold on things they want. Real players kill monsters, get loot, sell the loot, and then spend the gold on things they want. I personally dont believe that if more people started playing the game it would hurt the economy at all (probably quite the opposite) so therefore I dont think AFK farmers would hurt it if there were more of them either.

This was a good argument on the pros and cons of afk farming the only problem I have with afk farming slaughters mobs at key points where new players are trying to get there harts or just farming a few drops to finish an item. One afk farmer isn't bad but when you get 10 stacked on one point it messes up a player who is trying to do map completion

No, it would not result in a ban. Because AFK farming is usually not AFK. And you should not tell other ppl how they want to play their game. If someone puts turrent on a spawn while watching Netflix on a second monitor, it is not AFK farming. AFK farming, is usually done by bots. Majority of people use BUILD IN mechanics to auto attack and AUTOLOOT. They are putting freaking torrents on the ground, that's it. So do not abuse report button, because you can get yourself banned.

Which honestly i can understand since my friend does it. he has very little time. And would rather spend his time watching a movie than joining a Meta train. So he just semi-AFK farms while watching a movie. It's very little gold anyways according to him.

I don't have an issue with afk farming anymore, specially since anet has worked on lessening it's impact. I do have an issue with anet's flip flopping responses on everything, and their broad perspective on everything leaving it up to the players to figure out what they mean. Like i remember the early days where we had bots farming paths, they went out of their way to ban them. Then auto loot came out in HoT and afk farming was born, and those that were doing it back then and got caught would get a response of getting banned and being told setting your skill to auto use with the in game mechanic is a no no as it's not it's intended purpose. Then a few years later it was ok to afk farm so you can do the dishes/shower/laundry/etc. and now it's attentive afk farming, which is their way i guess of saying stay at your pc but alt tabbed out. Or like their original take on expansions being buy any future expansion and get previous ones as well, then hot came and changed to nope buying expansion only gives you that one, then a year i think after PoF, they then packaged HoT to come with it. But yet they won't package the living worlds to come with those expansions. Now that's it's been over a year with EoD, i've been waiting just to see what they do with it for package deals and sales. One thing with anet though is it's always a rollercoaster so just sit back and enjoy the ride lol

I took the test. the afk farm does not impact the game market. many people use it because they don't have time to make the meta games. in numbers it is a small portion.

No one gives a fruck about afk farmers. There's some griever types who complain incessantly about it but, that's out of greed as they simply don't want others to have anything in the game. They've complained about any type of farming events since launch.

it is not as bad as some other games hell look at blade n souls that thing is bot train city near dungeons/areas with loot wheels. only ones i seen in gw2 are in low areas which i feel is not really doing much just wish they do something about it cause they sit them at 1/2 hearts and it gets annoying to complete them because they are the ones with kill insert enemy here.

As if i9t was just about the materials. Makes me think you have no idea what one can do with the experience gained. Furthermore the most of these afk farmers i can see are typically in lower level maps. Woods/Ores can be put away, they are afk farmers not gathering bots. So it's down to find crafting mats. T3-4 blood, bones, scales etc. Now looking at the prices for these mats i'd say they are in one of the healthiest states out of all mats on the TP.

@@NikeonaBike Just saying it all may have a quite minor impact but it also does influence other areas. But overall it's mostly really just down to the aesthetics. Those stacks of 20+ engis/necros are just ugly to look at. At least it's not yet as dramatic as it was in WoW with those boomkin swarms that made entire areas completly undoable. Even made quests undoable. But i fear if Anet ain't do anything about it then it's just a matter of time until we see such bot swarms as in WoW. There will allways be someone trying to get a unfair advantage over others by any means.
