In 2001, Leeds United were within reach of the summit of English and European football. They had made the semi-finals of the Champions League and were knocking on the door for a first league title since 1992. Then, with a £100m gamble on players by Peter Risdale, Leeds missed successive Champions League campaigns. They were now in debt. They had to sell most of their players. They have been out of the Premier League since 2004.
