The England national football team have appointed a German head coach, and it would be fair to say that not everyone is best pleased about it.
Thomas Tuchel's appointment by the Football Association has brought out some weird and wonderful responses from journalists, pundits, and English football as a whole.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look - and gently mocks - some of those reactions, examines why England have appointed a foreign manager for the third time, and what a Thomas Tuchel England team might look like.

Tuchel has shown tremendous warmth towards England and English football. He's been open about wanting to return to England and so for me I'd rather have him as manager then some tax avoiding inept who spends most of their time burning themselves on the Costa del Sol. If Tuchel at some point decides to join in with singing God Save the King and maybe even at some point he comes to identify as being at least part English - based on the fact that he's lived in England for some time, has mastered the language and has made a tangible contribution to the nation (as our national team manager) then I'd be happy to call him a fellow countryman. Good luck Mr Tuchel. I'm looking forward to this next stage in the England story.

TBH I started paying attention to football more regularly when he was with Chelsea and nothing about him really gave it away to me that he wasnt English. Given I didnt listen to interviews closely but even then he's got the language down better than 2/3 of Americans or Brits.

That's the funniest thing about the racist angle via/Tuchel. Not only has he repeatedly expressed an affinity with English football, but he's felt unappreciated in Germany for awhile now. The German press mocked this appointment, labelled it desperate. I'm sure he'd take just as much satisfaction & pride at knocking Germany out at the World Cup as England manager as an Englishmen would. Probably more as his reasons for it go beyond some archaic sense of values, it's a personal prejudice for him.

So... Only 3 managers out of 20 in the Premier League are English (4 if you want to include Russell Martin. Born in England but represented Scotland). The 3/4 English managers haven't won a single major trophy between them and the last English manager to win one of 4 trophies was Harry Redknapp in 2008...16 Years ago. No English manager has won the Premier League. The last English manager to win the 1st division was Howard Wilkinson in 1992... 32 years ago. The vast majority of the backroom staff are foreign. Only 2 owners / majority shareholders out of 20 in the Premier League are English. Under 50% of the players in the Premier League are English. (think it's about 40% but don't have the data to hand) But all the sudden it's a big problem that we've got a foreign person managing England...

Another thing is that no English manager has won the premier league, since 1985 only two have won the main league twice (Scotland may be to blame), when you did have an English manager there were so many insulting his style of play. To remind those (not you), his worst performance at a tournament was a quarter final finish in the world cup against France. To me, the English fans really remind me of Ghanaian fans, but in a way better position: they can never be happy, nor patient, with their managers

La liga whilst teams may vary slightly stick to their spanish roots in football, italy stick to their defensive roots, netherlands stick to their footballing roots, ect.. However the premier league is the one of the only large nations who look overseas for their style of play, to bring spanish football to the premier league, italian football to the premier league, dutch, german ect… never looking for their own identity as a nation.

Things you should notice: 1.Only 3 out of 20 current Premier League managers were an English. 2.The last time an English manager had won the trophies was Harry Redknapp in 2008 with Portsmouth (FA Cup). 3.The last time an English manager had won the league happened just before the inaugural season of the Premier League, which was Howard Wilkinson with Leeds United in 1992. 4.The last time an English manager had won the European Cup/Champions League was Joe Fagan with Liverpool in 1984, although Bobby Robson being the last one if we counted all European club competitions (he led Barcelona to the 1997 Cup Winners Cup triumph). 5.Even worse, there are only 2 Premier League clubs whose owners/majority shareholders being English. 6.No foreign coach has ever managed to win the World Cup. This is another big problem. George Raynor in Sweden 1958 and Ernst Happel in 1978 were the only 2 foreigners that had almost won the World Cup. The women's side also followed this script. Last year, England did lose the World Cup Final to Spain with their foreign coach from the Netherlands (Sarina Wiegman).

As a foreigner I have to say though, Nigel is incredibly charismatic as a speaker. He is very dangerous when he's fighting for something that makes even a little bit of sense. That's part of how Brexit happened, he was able to drum up support on a legitimate issue without getting bogged down in the specifics of it. If it had to be a clear comparison of the issue and the consequences of course they would have lost, but with someone like that you dont have to talk about those boring but important parts. Especially when Brussels gave him a lot of ammunition to work with. TBH he's who I wish Trump was. I dont agree with either of them at all but when it comes to populist rhetoric if I had to choose one of them, its Nigel. Also I believe he doesnt openly Crime quite as hard.

While he wasn't the best people have to remember England were in shambles after the Iceland defeat in euro 2016 no one expected the 2018 team to do anything in the world cup and we did amazing expectations grew because between 2018 and 2024 we've had amazing young talent I still think we should have a won a trophy but he still an amazing job tbh

The issue for England is that the PL is a very international league where it’s unusual to get the top players in the top clubs to be English. And it’s even harder to find an English manager at the top of our game. Whereas that’s not the case in the other top footballing nations. So I sort of get the appointment. But it doesn’t really make sense because Southgate made a final twice. And he hasn’t been a top manager in the PL and neither has Lionel Scaloni or the last German manger before this one. So I think it’s a lot of bs. You don’t need a top club manager to win an international competition. Which is the fa’s logic.

The thing with the international game is its pride vs money that fuels the play. To win is one thing, to win with your own country.. absolutely different gravy. Glory is different to success. Glory can only be obtained through significant hardship, pain and sacrifice. Glory is always respected. Winning isn’t. If we do win with a foreign manager it will be nice but other big nations will just laugh to be honest. They will never take it seriously.

Tuchel is a perfect fit. He has shown on several occasions, that he thrives in cup tournaments (DFB Pokal with Dortmund, CL with Chelsea and the final he reached with PSG). And he is one of the best in game coaches, when it comes to reding a game and changing tactics and formations at halftime...also his private live as he said was at a highpoint when he coached in England: 16:57 he loved his time at Chelsea, loved living in London and his girlfriend is English. Congrats on becoming relevant contenders for the next world cup 👍 And didn't the English fans call for Southgates head during euro 24 for showing boring and uninspiring football?

Honestly, I am happy to hear that Thomas Tuchel is the manager of the English national team. It's scary for me to hear how outdated narratives are perpetuated in this day and age. The English national team has the potential to be champions; they just need an individual who knows what they are doing and to bring out the best of the players. If one were to look at the premiership, how many of the coaches are English? Since the advent of the premiership in 1992, how many English managers have won the title? As a non-English national, your last manager was your team's biggest hinderance, and he was out of his depth. Currently, I can't think of any English manager who I would rate as top class in the level of Pep, Klop, Tuchel, etc.Yes, I understand the desire to have an English manager; I honestly can't think of one who can really fulfil the potential of the current England team. I have listened to the whole video, and there is not even one argument that holds water as to why the coach should be English. We live in an ever changing world, and holding on to old ideas that no longer make sense is just detrimental to progress and surviving.

As an American think about it this way. I do not care if the manager of my national team is foreign or not because we do not create great managers or players for that matter. Our best player is Christian Pulisic. He’s by no means bad he’s good but he’s no Jude Bellingham. If you do not create great managers do not expect your country’s football association to select a manager of that country. I get that you guys made football. We made basketball, but if we didn’t create great coaches then I wouldn’t have a problem with selecting a foreigner to coach our national team.
