I’m not Dutch, but I agree that the Netherlands is decades ahead in solving a huge number of human transportation problems through clear thinking, on, followed by actively constructing, cycling infrastructure. What a civilized country. Leading the sensible, affordable, and let’s face it, the most fun way forward out of this current situation where cities are overwhelmed by cars. Hooray for the Netherlands !

@@coastaku1954 Well, that's why the roads are seperated over here. If that is done in Canada more often as well they don't anoy each other on the road. Besides, almost every adult Dutchie has both a bicycle and a car (sometimes North Americans claim that we are car free which is a weird thing to say). So therefore we understand each other because we all use both forms of tranportation on a daily or weekly basis.

After watching so many of your videos, last week I finally visite the Netherlands. Just amazed. Cycling is safe everywhere, and the advantages are notorious. Quiet and busy streets at the same time. So jealous of you, I am from Spain and in my city (Valladolid) things are improving a bit better than before, but not as much as in your country with a national-wide cycling planning.

1:25 In Japan, visitors walk on the left when climbing the stairs to the shrines. Never in the center. This is the god's path, where the local gods can go up and down without bumping into people. Conveniently, it also keeps the people from bumping into each other. I like seeing god paths on the roads in the Netherlands. A clear demarcation of space makes the whole road work better. A very nice touch. i hope it becomes more common.

Update: It was great! The asphalt was very smooth, the path really wide so there was plenty of space to overtake people safely and the amount of people cycling on it was remarkable for how rural some of the areas were! Stop signs were rare and and the waiting was incredibly short compared to what I’m used to in Rotterdam. I also just think the green line looks really cool and it was very easy to follow the highway just by the line. And yes, I did complete the 113km ride from Rotterdam to Eindhoven, what a ride.

Good to see more bicycle highways are being built, I really love these. Flanders is currently building a lot of them as well. It's odd the clear signage wasn't approved. One would think it is common sense to use bigger signs for higher speeds, just like we already do on motorways. And yeah, it's high time "fietsstraat" is put into law because for the moment cyclists still technically need to ride on the side and let cars pass like on any regular street. Luckily Dutch drivers know how to behave so it's just a formality. In Belgium drivers routinely break the no-passing rule and the police don't care at all about aggressive drivers on bicycle streets.

The Dutch loosen the purse strings when it comes to infrastructure. You should see how ambitious and expensive our bicycles' parking lots are around our cities and towns, most countries will not even spend half of that on car parks...Dutch design is the best in the world...
@hendrikdependrik1891

@@jentulj9611 Actually, Dutch infrastructure is quite cost-effective due to smart and pretty efficient planning and public procurement. Asphalt with brick print is cheaper and less labor intensive than real bricks for example. Using the old version of bike signage is also a way to save money, because those signs get less vandalism and money can be saved on cutting grass and bushes.

All roads are re-paved every 20 years or so anyways, turning old car roads into new cycle ways isn’t more expensive than repairing them and keeping the bad design. If people can get around without a car they save so much money that the upkeep of bicycle infrastructure is negligible.

About the sign for fietsstraat, I prefer the Belgian design, especially because of the "auto te gast" line. The German design may fit better into the existing road signs, but often isn't fully understood. Cyclists often expect these to be completely car free and car drivers often behave like in a regular 30-zone and react aggressive, when they can't overtake. And nobody really reads that often long list of exceptions.

Depends on the signage by law, as inline skaters are pedestrians for the law and should behave as such, but in practice it depends on the direct surroundings. If there are no pedestrian facilities nearby it usually can be used when keeping to the sides. However by law you should use the pedestrian dirt/sand/gravel/pavement/asphalt path next to it if that is present. We know some of those are bad for those small wheels, but the law doesn’t care, so neither do cyclists. But if you keep up with the cyclists and don’t block them when they want to pass, usually no one cares either.

There's a national road sign service (Nationale Bewegwijzeringsdienst) in Utrecht that makes all the new plans for wayfinding signs and keeps a database with all the signs. Their wayfinding committy has made an advice on how to design these new signs. At first there was a pilot cycle highway at Tilburg, which was researched in depth by a.o. Eindhoven University of Technology, and after that, 3 pilot signage projects (Mark shows one of them in the video above) were made, and researched by the company of Goudappel Cofeng. The NBd's advice was used by CROW (a non-profit platform of government and companies) to develop a new set of regulations that sets the new standard of bicycle highway signs. CROW conducts research into traffic, transport and infrastructure, develop regulations, and act as a knowledge platform that a.o. makes standard handbooks of how to construct roads and all their details. It's a standard set by the government of which all signs must abide by else it gets taken down. Here in the UK, all signs must be in Imperial mesurements otherwise it's illegal with the exception being width & hieght restrictions of which all new signs must be in Metric & imperial mesurements, Roundabout signs and other directional signs much be of certain design i.e. the text must be Transport Heavy or Transport Medium and a load of other rules outlined in the TSRGD which is a design document from the UK Government. Each country has their own standards or they'll use someone elses' standards i.e. in Germany signs must use DIN 1451 font, in Botswana and the surrounding countries of South Africa-Lesotho-Zimbabwe etc. must follow the SADC design standards and in North America plus Ireland, Malaysia and a few other places must abide by the MUCTD standard or some variation of it which puts warning signs in Lozenges (diamonds) with Highway Gothic typeface. In short, yes this is why the "better" sign was taken down and removed, because it did not comply with the Netherland's sign design standard and so it was an "illegal" sign
