Summary(Important Notes) of The Fiqh of Salah Episode 5: The Covering of The 'Awrah The first “شرط”(condition) is the “طهارة”(purification). This is the ablution. The second is the correct timings. The people who are traveling and/or have some excuse are allowed to combine “Zuhr and Asr” and “Maghrib and Isha”. Others who do not have an excuse, have to pray each prayer at its proper time. The third condition is the ‘Aurah should be covered. The skin should not be shown. This negates transparent, thin, or see-through cloth. The ‘Aurah of a man and a slave-lady is from the navel to the knee. The Hambali, Hanafi, and, Shafi all agree that the ‘Aurah is navel(belly button) to the knee. The Maliki is relaxed on the thighs but they also recommend it. It is not allowed for a man to expose his thigh in public. Evidence: Hadith in Abu Dawood. The Prophet(SAW) explicitly says that thigh is part of ‘Aurah. The ‘Aurah for Prayer is different than the ‘Aurah for the public. In the next passage, covering at least one of the shoulders along with the navel to the knee is required for the one who can afford it to pray. This is based on a Hadith where the Prophet(SAW) says whoever has two pieces of cloth should not pray unless he has covered at least one of his shoulders. Slave girls were given some leniency in following the commandments for women. They were not allowed to wear headscarves based on a verse in Surah Ahzab. This was common during that time as they weren’t considered for marriage. So her ‘Aurah was the same as a man’s ‘Aurah. The free lady’s entire body is her ‘Aurah except for her face and wrists. This is for prayer. The limbs, thigh, upper body, and hair are ‘Aurah. The covering of hair for prayer is mentioned explicitly by the Prophet(SAW). Even the tops of the feet should be covered, the soles are excused. The Hanafis say that the feet should be covered, if it is not, then the prayer is accepted. However, Hambali, Shafi, and Maliki say that the prayer is not accepted if the feet are not covered. Umm Salama’s statement is the most explicit concerning covering the tops of the feet. The evidence for exempting the face and the hands is a Hadith where the Prophet(SAW) says that the face and hands should not be covered during Umrah and Hajj. The scholars agree that this applies to Salah as well. The mother of the child means a female slave who gave birth to the owner’s child and so has some special rights like never being sold again. Her ‘Awrah is like the ‘Awrah of the slave girl. A slave can have multiple owners. Example: Sons inherit a slave from the father. One of them frees the slave from his side. Now the slave will negotiate with the others and eventually be free. Till he becomes free, he will still be applying the rules of a slave. Note: Slaves, mother of child, partial slave, etc are terms that we don’t have nowadays. These rules are meant for times when there were things like them. The rules about covering the ‘Awrah: Wearing silk and gold in large quantities during prayer is not allowed for a man, but they are allowed for women. Actual and very expensive silk, not synthetic. Also, silk ties are allowed. Whoever prays in a stolen dress or bought with Haram(unlawful) money or in a location where he stole, his prayer will not be accepted. This is one of the unique rules that only Hambali Madhab has. All other three say that if you do something good using something Haram, then the Haram and Halal will be weighed by Allah. But the Hambali's are very strict and say that doing something good with something Haram will not be accepted. Side note: 1. Real silk duvet, bed cover, mattress, are not allowed. Carpets are allowed just for walking over, not for praying. The reason silk is not allowed is because it is associated with femininity. Silk is only allowed if there is a need. 2. There are three levels - What the soul wants, what is needed, what is a dire necessity. What is a dire necessity means if you don’t get it, you will die. In that case, everything is allowed and there is no Haram and Halal. This is known as ضرورة. The one which is needed is a level below this, it is called حاجة. This is one where it doesn’t kill you but there is a real concern like irritation, inflammation, and/or replacing body parts. In this case, gold and silk are allowed. Priority of Covering the Required Body Parts:- 1. Whoever can wear only one garment and it covers one shoulder then it is obligated for them to do that. But if someone cannot do that with his garment, then the shoulder is forgiven and the navel to the knee should be covered. 2. If someone does not have enough cloth to cover the navel to the knee, then he should only cover the private parts(thigh exposed). 3. If someone does not even have that much, he should choose one of the private parts and cover that. 4. If someone does not have any cloth at all, he should pray in the sitting position to not expose himself much. However, if he prays to stand, the prayer is still accepted but it is preferred that he sits and prays. 5. If someone has a choice where he only has an impure(Islamically) garment or he can pray naked, then he should pray in that garment because praying naked is a bigger violation. 6. If someone prayed a prayer in very bad circumstances(naked/exposing thigh/covering only one private part) and then the circumstance changed(before the ending of the prayer time) without him previously knowing, then he is not obligated to make up for that prayer. If the situation was in the control(he knew the circumstance will change before the prayer time ended), then he should make up for the prayer. Whatever you can do, you have to do, and there is a priority. People should also be conscious about their ‘Awrah while praying and should accommodate their tight pants in a way that meets the requirements for prayer. They should also not be offended if someone advises them in this regard since the acceptance of their prayer is at stake here. This ends the entire summary. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair

15:19 What about covering our face with a mask in salah during this pandemic? Can you explain more on the concession and permissibility of such practice? Some individuals in our community are using the hadith that you mention to dispute the mask mandate in jamaah prayers.
