Over the years, people have suggested several ideas and theories for the purpose of the Parasaurolophus’s crest. Some of them are plausible theories, but others are just downright weird, with the weirdest one going to the fire-breathing Parasaurolophus theory.

Great video I'm a Christian creationist who read this book as a kid I do appreciate you actually considering the book to some extent and not just making a mockery of it. just wanted to point out a few things. Firstly, from a creationist point of view, two animals having a similar defence mechanism makes sense as we believe that God created everything and as such certain creatures would logically be similar. Secondly, while you may view a creationist worldview as silly we view an evolutionary one the same way for example for evolution to be true flight would have had to evolve four separate times (insects, birds, bats, and pterosaurs) and Thirdly, (this one is slightly irrelevant) a lot of us believe that Dragon is nearly an old term for dinosaur and stories of them are exaggerated accounts of man interacting with dinosaurs. that's all. Keep in mind I am not a scientist or (as you may be able to tell from my profile picture) an adult. I am not trying to argue I am stating my perspective I can't force you to believe what I believe any more than you could force me to believe what you believe and trying would likely just irritate you I can't force Christianity down your throat and part of the reason we have a poor reputation is that some of us try (which actually goes against the Bible which states that we are to speak the truth in love) Well that's all. Still more logical then my hypothesis on the reason that T-rex and other therapods that were slowly losing their arms was due to the gradual evolution of telekinesis to hold their prey still enough to deliver a killing blow. T-Rex don't need to outrun you, or grab you, you were dead the moment it locked eyes with you.

Small addendum: Pa-illogicalogists have linked the Telekinetic-Theropod Theory to the Clairvoyant-Calender Theory, where it's believed that the colouration of ceratopsian frills displayed a circular calendar of the future, and later species evolved bigger frills because they would be able to look further into the future (ancient Meso-American cultures would of course base their circular stone calendars on the prehistoric calendars depicted on the frills). Consequently, theropods obtained telekinesis because the ceratopsians displayed the end of all non-avian dinosaurs at the hand of a meteorite, and telekinesis was the only thing that could possibly halted its impact. Alas... the adaptation came too late, when the Cretaceous reached its end, Tyrannosaurus' telekinetic powers were too underdeveloped, and the frill of Triceratops still predicted doom for the dinosaurs. Now, their valiant attempt at saving the reign of the dinosaurs is remembered only by the ones who dare... to theorize.

Hello! I am the artist who drew the cover image for "Fire Breathing Dinosaurs? The Hilarious History of Pseudoscience At Its Silliest" by Phil Senter! Thank you for including his book, and my art, in your video! I was inspired by many modern bird species that have red eyes (the Red-eyed Vireo, Asian Glossy Starling, Black-shouldered kite, to name a few). The word dinosaur didn't come about until their discovery in the late 1800's. Before that, the only term was dragon. So who knows, perhaps dinosaurs and dragons are one and the same.

Animals that use chemical defenses like bombardier beetles and skunks usually have the defense organs in the rear so they can shoot at predators when fleeing from then. Therefore, a fire-farting dinosaur would make more sense.

If, supposing, all of a sudden everything we knew was shown to be false, the cognitive dissonance would be devastating to many who staked their whole lives on certain claims. Remember when we all used to think dinos were scalely lizards, and then all of a sudden they were feathered bird relatives? It took years for the public to really accept it, and dinosaur toy manufacturers are STILL making scientifically inaccurate scalely lizard toys and passing them off as dinosaurs (see, "Your dinosaurs are wrong" playlist) Jurrassic Park Four still thinks velociraptors are humansized.. Think of things like that, and then consider that besides a consumer product that may or may not sell, high reputations of prestigious scientists who backed one theory over another might also be on the line.

I owned this book as a child. I do remember the fire breathing picture vividly as well as the Cowboy one, I also thought it was so cool to see humans and dinosaurs together. I was obsessed with dinosaurs as a child, but my fundamentalist parents only provided me with creationist material. It’s only been in the last 10 years my interest has be renewed to continue my learning, but now without the religious propaganda.

Well it is a pretty amazing creature. The little outlets where the chemicals mix fluctuate at incredible speeds to only let out small amount of the liquids at a time because if they just stayed open the beetle would literally explode itself.

Seeing this tumbnail unlocked a long forgotten memory of mine, when i was fascinated by dinosaurs as a kid. My dad who is a christian used to read me stories from the bible and once told me how there is a fire breathing monster described in the bible. He also said how its speculated that that could be the parasaurolophus and for a long time i believed that. I was very young and didn't have much of an opinion of my own lol. Now, I am a believer of objectivity, that of which Paleontology persists on following if or until a theory is rewritten or proven wrong. Gish had something going there with his theory--maybe Hadrosaurs like _Parasaurolophus_ could concentrate some kind of projectile from their mouth. It's not something we haven't seen with the Camel and Alpaca before--including some lizards and birds. If these animals use regurgitation and spitting as a defense mechanism why condemn Duane Gish's theory for its reputation? It's paleontologists like Philip J. Senter that should be teaching the next generation of scientists to appreciate such speculations & theories, therein forming our own decisions and research not destroying another's credibility. That's is what Paleontology is at the end of the day: Art formed around facts & logic.

Wow, blast from the past, I definitely had this book as a kid, it was one of many that sparked a love of dinosaurs. Still do love dinosaurs, and still a Christian, but not a young earth creationist type, in spite of how awesome fire-breathing dinosaurs sound. It's a combination of weird, funny, and frustrating seeing how they try to twist evidence to fit a hyper "literal" interpretation of the Bible, and they still have to bring in a bunch of random stuff that's not even in the Bible to make it work (i.e. calculating the age of the earth at 6,000 years or whatever). The Bible isn't a science textbook, and isn't trying to be one. If you read the writings of the early church fathers its clear that many of them already understood the Genesis creation account symbolically/poetically. Frankly, to me it is much more in keeping with my understanding of God that he would create a universe of mind-boggling complexity, where life can develop, adapt and "be fruitful and multiply across the earth" as Genesis puts it, rather than plonking down everything fully formed in one "literal" week and hoping nothing changes or the whole thing breaks down. Since I don’t think anyone has mentioned it, the verse in the book is from Job 41, which is talking about the Leviathan. To TLDR it, it’s a sea serpent that’s more or less God’s most powerful creature, at least on earth. It was irresponsible of him to use it for this argument about a obviously unrelated animal, as the Leviathan is specifically mentioned as a sea creature.

As a Christian, I really appreciate your kindness and gentleness to Christians who are rather ignorant on this science, and it is obvious you are going out of your way to be polite. That takes genuine character and true kindness. I believe God is real, but a lot, if not most, of the creationist science is ridiculous. But I understand Christians who are rejecting it. You would, in fact, be able to find vast amounts of scientific data that proves all historical events in the bible to be true. @@swanqlord3048 I personally don't think that science necessarily contradicts the Bible, but every Christian interprets scripture differently to some degree, so I think the best idea would be to study the Bible yourself and make your own conclusions. As a disclaimer, I am no expert on the Bible nor am I a scientist, but I think I have adequate understanding of both to make my conclusions. As a side note, some of the greatest scientists in the world are devout Christians, so, maybe that speaks for itself. Thanks to everyone out there keeping discussions respectful, God bless!

I wouldn't discount the fire breathing on the account of it being harmful to the user, nature has a way of not caring how harmful it is as long as it promotes survival. From lizards spraying their own blood and having easily detached limbs, to certain sea creatures voiding their bowels to escape, it doesn't matter how self harming it is as long as it helps them survive. I think it's unlikely any dinosaurs we know of would breathe some sort of fire, but I'm sure there could be one out there somewhere, after all we have barely scratched the surface on extinct species.

What do you think about this: herbivore digestion creates lots of flamable methane (natural gas). Herbivore dinosaurs also had large smooth quartzite stone in some kind of gullet. Stones, which if struck together would spark. And light any flammable gas in the area. I really don't know, but the idea crossed my mind yesterday.

I had this very book as a kid, and I found it fascinating. Though my ideas on history have changed over the years, it was one of the first books on Dinosaurs I read and it inspired my fascination with paleontology. Regardless of the accuracy or contents, I'm still quite fond of the book as it's really what brought me here today. Honestly I was incredibly shocked when I saw a page from it as the thumbnail and the memories flooded back. Fantastic Video and a really fair look at the topic.

I had this book growing up!! It was one of my favorites because it had so much info in it and the little maps of where the dinosaurs were from. Not gonna lie, I understood that the fire breathing thing in was just a neat idea in the book, but I later went to a creationist conference where the guy fully claimed that they had found a fossil of a fire breathing dinosaur. I was pretty disappointed when I got older and found there was no such discovery. RIP fire breathing dinosaurs, you would have been so cool!

Because humans from hundreds of years ago found fossils of dinosaurs from millions of years ago and didn't understand where they came from so they chalked it up to dragons. Chinese emperors had fossils ground up and stirred into a tea because they thought it would give them the powers of a dragon. Kings sent out knights to kill dragons because they found dinosaur tooth fossils, then blamed dragons on dead livestock instead of making fences bigger so lions couldn't sneak in for a quick meal. Dragons are a universal concept because dinosaurs were all over the world.

You know, this video reminded me of a quote from Jack Horner, Comparing science and religion isn't like comparing apples and oranges - it's more like apples and sewing machines. I can't exactly say I agree with this, in fact, I'd argue that comparing religion to science is like comparing a green apple to a red one. They both fundamentally are the same in terms of providing answers for the origin of our existence. I don't agree with the thought process that science should completely surpass religion nor vice versa. Whilst an argument could be said that most creationist theories are rather baffling, to say the least, people act as if there haven't been any such theories in the scientific field either, or should I remind everyone that we once believed this diverse group of prehistoric animals to all be nothing more than giant Iguanas? No theory can be ruled out unless there is a 100% possibility that it can not be fact. I urge everyone to keep an open mind and don't close the doors to such possibilities. That being said, a fire breathing Dinosaur is a bit out of the realm of belief in my opinion.

While I never believed Parasaurolophus could breathe fire, even as a small child, and thought it always made more sense for the crest to be related to acoustics, it's obviously a very cool idea and that image is pretty awesome. To my knowledge, the most likely explanation for what leviathan was is a crocodile, it fits very well with how an ancient would view it. similarly, behemoth could be describing a hippo This makes sense to me, and isn't my own idea, just adding info to the discussion :-)

No one is trying to take your beliefs about god away from you but it's pretty obvious to anyone who's willing to apply skepticism to every idea they consider, including the ideas they cherish, that the only reason to believe in the young earth concept or any other aspect of magical creationism is fear of not living forever. This is why the only people who don't believe evolution makes any sense as an explanation for our origins are people who believe in some magical afterlife and even many religious people acknowledge that evolution makes sense. The idea of finding evidence for the supernatural goes against the notion of faith since faith means believing regardless of the evidence and if the supernatural is real, it isn't bound by laws of physics and can therefor contradict any proven evidence and still be true. The fact that you try to find evidence for your beliefs proves you have no actual faith.
