The First Computer Song Ever. Is it creepy?

The computer in question was the IBM 704, which was one of the first computers capable of generating sound. In 1961, John Kelly and Carol Lockbaum, two engineers at Bell Labs, programmed the computer to "sing" the song. The computer's voice was produced using an early form of speech synthesis, which involved generating a series of tones that were then shaped into words using formant synthesis.
The resulting performance, which is often referred to as "Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)," was a landmark moment in the history of computing and technology. It demonstrated the power of computer-generated sound and showed that computers could be used to create art and music.

I’d personally have to disagree. Sure, it can sound monotonous, but for one, the voice was built on an actual human one, so if just thinking of A.I. makes you gag, then you’d be pleased to at least know this. Second, if anything, it can be more of an ear worm and/or ear-sore in my honest opinion, and otherwise, it’s fine; it sounds ditzy, and that’s good enough for me and TikTok on a daily basis.

TikTok is right in the Uncanny Valley, it sounds like an alien trying to lure humans. With IBM, part of its charm is that it's a computer speaking, it's not trying too hard.

I hate how some people use this song to scare people First I did thought that this was a scary song but when I saw the lyrics I felt lied to, this is a piece of history, the first ever singing computer, lyrics are so sweet, its about a male showing his love to his soon-to-be wife The "It wont be a stylage marriage, I cant afford a carriage, but you look swet on a seat of a bicycle built for two :)" is so sweet 😭

"a male" 💀 oof, a very brave choice of words, people get offended at such terms nowadays (well, women do about "female", claiming it to be dehumanizing, men don't seem petty enough to cry about "male" because we generally don't have a huge persecution complex (nor a giant ego cos, let's be honest, women think they're the center of the universe, they've made up an entire "patriarchy" theory to claim men are in some great conspiracy against them when, again, we're not that petty - women are though, they really looked at this world, filled to the brim with men's suffering, completely ignored it because they don't even perceive us as human and hyperfocused on the few bad things that happen to women too (even if they happen to men more, like assault, violence)) and we don't double guess every little word, trying to find evidence of oppression against us which exists purely in our minds as a presupposition (even though systemic oppression against men definitely exists and it's easy to prove: the forced conscription to the army/military, literally killing us because the world doesn't see value in our lives, this one's worldwide (with like 3 countries being an exception), but there are plenty cases of systemic oppression limited to a given country, like in my country men are forced to carry more weight than women and we can retire a few years later than women despite us living shorter (the government also bans life-extending medication for men), there are also plenty of funds, scholarships etc. only for women - and these are only the systemic cases, enforced by the law, the ones you can point at in legal documents, the ones our governments enforce and there's no way to run away, don't even get me started on our bullshit culture which kicks men when they already lay down)

I heard Vocaloid was going to be called Daisy after the IBM7094, but changed the name to Vocaloid before release. So Yamaha considers the IBM here to be the first Vocaloid, and that the 7094 is canonically Hatsune Miku's grandfather.

The accompaniment was easy, because the could tell a computer to generate a, for example, 750 hertz sine wave. The vocals were harder. You couldn’t tell it to just sing, you needed to tell it what vowel sound to make, and it was a lot harder. This was groundbreaking back then.

For me, this is really nice, the voice sounds like that of a man really in love and you can even feel the feeling in his tone of voice and as a Vocaloid fan it makes me nostalgic to know that from a computer I sing a little love song A whole project would be born that has become known throughout the world It is also seen that one of the engineers was quite happy to see that he managed to make a computer sing.

The voice tends to be the heart of any discussion surrounding this artifact in computing history, but what really interested me were the instruments by themselves from the voice. They say it’s the small details that matter most, but it just goes to show that one could argue that computers were already starting to get worse and worse by the 1980s, even before the first PCs started rolling out to the general public. What I mean by that is even for its time, the overall audio of IBM’s “singing computer” was incredible, and had none of the grating beeps and buzzes that later devices like the ZX Spectrum and the many that ran MS-DOS suffered from; it sounded like real instruments, not some sort of chiptune that would make the airwaves only six decades later. (I want to make it clear that I have my own soft spot for these beeps and bloops, especially when playing Christmas songs, and in particular my childhood; I’m just pointing out that such an “ancient” device in my honest opinion was far ahead of its time, and later computer technicians in my eyes really should have learned from these folks.) This further reinforces why I have a cozy atmosphere for my home similar to the mid-20th century A.D., in which that period had its own set of aesthetics. It’s following in all my elders’ footsteps at this point, and besides, without tradition, we wouldn’t have modern.
