Somehow if the show ended right here, this one episode would've been a satisfying conclusion to 54 years of Doctor Who. Not only did it bring back the 1st Doctor, but it even brought up his reasoning for leaving Galifrey in the first place, tieing everything together neatly.

this episode, while flawed, does actually inform the Second Doctor's character a bit. the First Doctor seemed opposed to getting involved in anything unless the situation demanded it, but all others take willingly inject themselves into whatever they come across. the Second Doctor specifically said very early in his life that evil *must* be fought wherever it's found, possibly because he retained - perhaps not a memory, but maybe an urge or gut feeling - from the events of this episode

There's an idea that the First Doctor, being fresh from Gallifrey, still had quite a bit of the old Time Lord ethos about him -- non-intervention and all that; and was an arrogant soul to boot, just like the other Time Lords -- feeling himself intellectually and morally superior to humans. But as time passed and he was exposed to the many huge threats out there, and came to see humans in a better light, he softened and began to bend the "rules" to actively favor good over evil, until by his Third incarnation he had transformed into the cosmic crusader we witness to this day.

It's all the more heartwarming when you remember the 1st Doctor was afraid of regenerating too. The TARDIS brought him comfort twice. Also, if you take certain expanded universe material as canon, 9 was involved in the Christmas Truce. So the first Doctor, first post-Time War Doctor, and first Doctor of a new regeneration cycle all witness to the one day, in one of history's worst days, where everybody lives

It's just occurred to me how clever this ending is for the First, and how well it matches up with the lost/recovered footage of Episode Four of The Tenth Planet. In the original footage, right before he regenerates, the Doctor has an odd moment where he just stares at the Tardis console as though it's acting by itself. Then, when Ben and Polly enter the Tardis, he's down. There's no given reason for it. This, however, offers an explanation as to why. The Doctor returns to the South Pole, to Ben and Polly, and he immediately forgets about everything he's gone through with his later incarnation. He looks at the Tardis, wondering why it's activated, before succumbing to his regeneration. This time, though, he accepts it. Anyone else agree or have I blasphemed?

In the classic series, the Doctor always seemed to remember meeting his future selves. Only in Day of the Doctor was it mentioned he would forget, but Moffit never was one for continuity. My theory has always been that whenever a Doctor meets his future self, it creates an alternate reality. That is why a current Doctor does not remember meeting himself in the past. So if the original Doctor met his future selves in The Three Doctors, The Five Doctors, Day of the Doctor, and this episode, he has five different realities, including the original line. It also explains why the fourth Doctor appeared in Day of the Doctor as an old man.

The second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) was underrated and perhaps the most important Doctor; if the burgeoning fans of the '60s did not accept him - or the concept of regeneration - the series would not have been around to be reinvented by the BBC and introduce Doctor Who to a new generation.

Its unfortunately so few of his episodes survive. It's very difficult to get attached to him when over 50%of his episodes are either animated or missing. I started with new who, then went back to watch the classic series. While he had some great stories I felt like I was missing so much of him that every time I watched a story I felt like I missed something. I know this has nothing to do with DW but I just can't help but feel sad about the Christmas Truce... These men may have layed down their weapons... But it was in a mutual understanding that they were simply poor men in a war between Kings. The next day they'd be once again enemies and now maybe the pain would only be worse These poor soldiers would probably be gunning down the same men who they, just the other night, had been joyously singing with. The miracle of the truce is not to be understated... But neither is the tragedy that was to become the Great War.

Levi Brennan. It was that and other things. Without the rise of Leninist Communism, with aid from War Germany by sending him there to destabilize Russia, and then the communists coming back on Germany the last weeks of the Great War, then politics of the peace would be different. Without the workers democratic party making ultimatum demands on the Kaiser and urging German military mutinies in July-Oct 1918 even though Germany was relatively untouched by the war physically before surrender. If Communist youth groups did not spar with Nazi youth groups in the streets of Germany in the 30s, destabilizing the moderate government, requiring a heavy hand of martial law, and adding to hunger and chaos. Providing the proCouncil an avenue in, just as had happened in France 140 years before. Then the border expansions of Italy and Germany. At first a quest for more farmland, quickly becoming an oil war, since oil is needed for the Haber Bosh nitrogen process (just like in WWI) and the growing war machine ran on oil. Oil the Russians and British controlled. So lots of stuff.

It's still amazing that someone came up with the idea back when this show was on and Hartnell was starting to fall ill, instead of just replacing the character with someone else and adding a new person, to make it so the Doctor was an alien who could regenerate into another person. This was back in the early days of sci-fi television, no Star Trek, none of that. The idea was sheer genius.

One of the original ideas was to find someone who looked like William Hartnell and have him be the Doctor, still one person. The term regeneration was introduced in the Third Doctor’s era. The original idea being the TARDIS “rejuvenated” the Doctor, almost like it made him age backwards. Course looking at Troughton and Hartnell it’s a little hard to believe they’re the same person if we’re going with the deaging idea.

I honestly believe this was a very good episode for Moffat to go out on especially with the really neat tie in with the legendary Stewart family! Capaldi was a fantastic Doctor, really wish he would have stayed a bit longer. I was also delighted with David Bradley's performance as the First Doctor and was a great way to remember the character along with the legendary William Hartnall, it would be brilliant if he (David Bradley) came back for another few episodes at some point but that's entirely upto Chibnall.

You know, I feel this scene gives the First Doctor the send off he should have gotten back in 1966. I feel the original episode was more going for the shock value of the Doctor changing his face for the first time, which is understandable but, seeing as he's the one who started it all, he absolutely deserved a bit more of a farewell than he originally did.
@peterkorman77

I kinda like how it was before. No overly dramatic sendoff. He changes and he moves on. For the first regeneration, I can't think of a better way to do it. These days, each Doctor gets an entire episode dedicated solely to the concept of regeneration, which feels like overkill to me. Imagine if Capaldi had regenerate in The Doctor Falls instead of in TUAT. It wouldn't be an overly sensationalized sendoff, it would be fast and kinda sad, but true to the nature of the character. Or maybe that's just me. I still enjoyed Twice Upon A Time.

Either he's acting like that to make the Captain more comfortable ('cause the captain is actually present every time, even during the "smack bottom" line he's INSIDE the ship. The Brigadier saluting always gets me, with the music swelling so perfectly and powerfully and sadly. The doctor talked in his tenth incarceration that he hated saluting. The eleventh doctor would then go on to salute Kate. The Brigadier, come back as a cyberman to save Kate from falling out of the airplane, then gave a salute to Capaldi in the graveyard, and looked sad when he returned it finally. And here we are. Twelve watching as Brigadier's father gives him a salute, and looking so strangely melancholy about it...and the perfect segueway into Hartnell's regeneration.

This isn't just a heartwarming ending to the show, its a perfect addition to the Who mythology. From what I've read, the First Doctor didn't really think much of us humans - it was starting with Two that he considered himself mankind's protector. Well look at that, the end of Doctor Who. And it's not a bad ending. Sure, the episode wasn't amazing but the lesson that 12 teaches 1 in this story is the important part. The line "The universe generally fails to be a fairytale. But that’s where we come in." really encapsulates most of the series and provides an answer to the question 1 asks earlier in the episode (that being he left Gallifrey to find out the reason why good always wins over evil despite logic). The Doctor becomes that reason and I feel that this is honestly the last great message of Doctor Who, at least for just now.

The negativity surrounding 'Twice Upon A Time' (i.e sexist First Doctor) really overshadows the beauty of such powerful storytelling. The sense of foreboding yet acknowledging their destiny is beautifully underplayed by the First and Twelfth Doctors in this scene. You can hear the choral chants of 'Auld Lang Syne' in the background - the popular Scottish folk song roughly translated in English as "for (the sake of) old times" is symbolic as a traditional farewell bid to the old year (or old times). Also, the lyrics themselves are "And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet, for auld lang syne" which is the epitome of the Twelfth Doctor's era - just be kind.

Love this part. This rlly was the best Christmas element to a Christmas special. I find this episode while it gets flack for not even meant to be existing I think it’s the best BBC ever made, it doesn’t feel like a finale cuz it’s not the finale was the episode before...this was the epilogue for twelve and it rlly impressed me.

I have binged the entire series from Hartnell all the way up to this point. I have to say them using Hartnell's footage was such a love letter to the past in my opinion. Adding depth and layers to a scene back then when no one knew what was happening to the Doctor.

David Bradley is amazing, he not only played the First Doctor in memory of William Hartnell, he also played William Hartnell playing the Doctor in 'Adventures in Time and Space' the story of how Doctor Who got made originally.

Don't know why, but that ending gives me chills... From 3:07 onward. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the Second Doctor is my favorite. I don't know. It's brilliant that they used the actual footage. Good old Pat got one last chance to play the Doctor... Edit: I think it might be because it brings things back to where it all started. In a sort of re-beginning. And it makes me feel like it's all starting over again, all the adventures, the loss, the happieness, the universe... Makes me feel excited for what I know he gets to do in his future.

Anyone here (like me) who remembers that regeneration the first time around on television in the 1960s, as William Hartnell became Patrick Troughton? As a child I didn't know what was happening, but all these years on, that scene of the first regeneration remains in my memory.
