Agreed. And its sad that he didn't realize that those qualities are why good wins. Because when you love and are loyal to others, you are willing tosacrifice for them. You are in for the long haul, until the end of the line. As another commenter on this scene said to victory or death. Good beats evil because evil is basically selfish. AT least why it works in fiction:)

@@danielhaire6677 Good is higher-effort than evil. Thus, those that commit to good over evil tend to be more determined. Evil, being easier, is more appealing to the cowardly and lazy. @@Blazieth another detail on the continuum: on average, good is more sustainable long term. The morality of an action tends to determine the morality of actions taken towards you, therefore meaning the more pain you cause, the more people will try to pain you. This reflexive nature of morality makes it so that, as time progresses, evolution favors the kind over the cruel, as the cruel will kill themselves and anyone they rely on out before too long, while the kind will make things better for themselves and others. In that, what the Doctor does is not to save a couple of lives, every so often, but instead, by promoting kindness on a universal scale over time, he has slowly increased the lifespans of many species that would have killed themselves off without interference. He prunes the cruel from the universe more swiftly than natural so that the kind can truly grow.

I watched An Unearthly Child (all four episodes) and, no, he wasn't entirely good. He was very much protective of himself and Susan. It took time for the Doctor to learn how to, well, Doctor. There are aspects of the Doctor in all three of the companions in that story. My personal take is that there were deeper reasons for why he left which have maybe only been lightly alluded to. I believe he was, for reasons unrevealed, trying to hide the Hand of Omega (Remembrance of the Daleks), and maybe other items, in order to protect Gallifrey. When Ian and Barbara showed up and got into the TARDIS, the Doctor had to act and act quick as he and Susan had been found out. Eventually, the Doctor realized that they weren't enemies, their intentions were true, and he gained a greater understanding of his role in the universe. When he had to summon them in The War Games, the Doctor used a story of being bored, etc., so as not to give away his real reasons for leaving, though he did point out the evils which exist in the universe. He even kept his real reasons hidden from the Tribunal and from the Celestial Intervention Agency.

In his first episode he literally kidnaps two people. The First Doctor went through an arch of slowly warming up to his human companions over time. At first he was quite cold and detached, as well as occasionally confrontational and cruel. But then he warms up to those around him and becomes more of a caring grandfatherly figure, though retains a bit of a short temper and rather irritable nature.

That’s why it’s called like that. It’s just “The Doctor’s Theme”. He is the same person. I sort of get why you think it’s lazy but I’m pretty sure that it was like a way to close off Murray Gold’s run as a composer for the show by recalling his best work. The episode is filled with almost every significant track he made.

The issue is, Season 11 showed the battles and villains getting even worse than even Season 10, while this Doctor refuses to face them at their worst. She faces them after they have won. That is more Missy than the Doctor, which is not good to see. She seems to ultimately give in to the far bigger problems and deal with the smaller problems attached. She is not the Doctor. Not yet. Why is evil so equally balanced by good? It's simple: *Evil is easy.* Most, if not all, people who turn to evil do so because being evil is less personally taxing: When the plans of the evil fall apart, they run away to scheme another day. Evil won't throw away valuable resources to salvage a bad plan: They'll cut their losses, abandon their allies, and flee. Someone prepared to do good is prepared to do it for the long haul, and won't stop until either victory or death.

I'll take it a step further... evil is NATURAL, while good is UNNATURAL. We, as humans, are really the only species to actively try to seperate good and evil. We do "good" things for... no reason at all, really. It makes us feel good maybe, or sometimes someone believes in "karma" and hopes to be rewarded in some way... but there's always a reason behind it. Evil, selfishness, etc.. is as you said easy, but it also comes natural. The basic survival instinct is simply "I need to survive, and pass on my DNA". Animals do it, insects do it, and to a degree even trees/flowers do it by taking over other areas through pollen/nuts/etc. The reason why Evil wins in most scenarios is... it needs no real reason to win, and it is the easy way. But good? Good always needs a reason, and continous effort. Without the continous effort, it falls into neutral and evil in time. Its a depressing thought.

MrCyion I agree. When I started watching Who twelve years ago, I was being bullied, had little friends, and home life was sorta falling apart, so I didn’t ever feel hopefully or important, didn’t ever feel like I matter to most people. Then my mom showed me Doctor Who and went as far as to record re-runs of classic who so I could explore and learn more of the show and it honestly changed my life and I couldn’t be more happy than I am now. So this episode totally embodies how I feel about the show despite the ups and downs it’ll have.

Given the mindset Twelve was in, I do not think that this is likely. On the other hand, the TARDIS, and the Testimony, which contained the memories of possibly all of the Doctor's former (and future) companions, might set up this adventure, just as you said. It makes more sense to me than to say that the Testimony, needing to get to know his character. Ian, The Brigadier, Sarah-Jane, Martha, and so many others would have already given it all it needed to know. "Everyone who has ever met him" knows. It would not need more evidence.

Probably still my favorite special. The First Doctor wasn't a "problem solver" he just floated about and occasionally fixed things because he or his companions accidentally broke something, and occasionally coming across people like the Daleks and Cybermen. It wasn't until the Second Doctor where he began going out of his way to help and save others at his own risk. Even in the early Hartnell stories, he was more concerned with "leaving" than helping. This special in a way helped explain the transition of the First into the Second and why the Doctor does what he now does best, helping and saving others.

@Basil Serpent you're right but 9s theme has been adopted as the universal theme of the Doctor in recent years. Personally I like it, it's mysterious, haunting, dark, and hopeful all at the same time. Perfectly encapsulates the character imo. Different versions of the theme can be heard at moments of 10's and 12's run as well. I can't recall if it was ever used during the 11th era instead being replaced by "I Am The Doctor" and "Madman With A Box" which are also great themes I'd like to be used more lol

This really is one of the best new episodes ever and personally my favorite Christmas special. What an ingenious idea, teaming the first Doctor with the most recent one and examining the Doctor's ability to move on and keep going--not his power to regenerate--but philosophically, what keeps him going and why doesn't he just stop? I applaud this episode's ability to stay interesting and maintain energy despite actually having no true threat. It's great to finally have a more relaxed episode in the show where we can just look back fondly on its history and then look ahead in excitement--no invasions or universe destroying cataclysms, just one man (in two incarnations) thinking about his life. It's a testament to this character that he's fascinating enough to make us want to see that.

@@obiwankenobi687 I have near enough said that exact line haha. RTD's era was excellent for many reasons, and so was Moffat's. Both had different strengths in dialogue, for me, and I'll take both, thanks. Chibnall seems to be giving me something all-new too, something a lot closer to home than either of the former, and that feels very cool. Plus, if you're claiming that Capaldi can't act then... uh... I don't quite know how to tell you that he's quite possibly my single favourite actor ever. He can evoke any emotion he damn well pleases and launch it straight into my heart with those railgun eyebrows, before using every single line on that brilliant face to express every single emotion his character is feeling and then rounding it off with a joke and a grin that has me on the floor laughing and yelling "THAT FUCKIN' EEJIT". I love Tennant too but... damn. All four of the core cast in this episode were amazing to me, and even (I presume) Briggs managed to get some serious emotion along through Rusty. All just my opinion of course and I'm trying to respect yours as well but I just don't understand how you can possibly think that none of the actors in this episode can act. I love that they took time to (sort of) answer the question of the Doctor leaving Gallifrey as this is the original Doctor. The one who did it. It's one of the things I love about this episode. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate how Bradley takes his time to find the right sentences, as if he is having difficulty remembering the lines, which would've been the case with Hartnell, certainly around the time of The Tenth Planet. A little detail perhaps, but a fitting one.

Almost like it acknowledges how much more aloof and standoffish One was - how he was willing to lie, cheat and straight up murder for his own benefit - but that he was still a good man under that crusty worn-out exterior... He spoke the prophecy about the Hybrid and admitted he was scared, but gave no information about what it was. But people seem to forget that Bradley isn’t just playing the first Doctor he’s also playing Hartnall in his very last episode/scenes when his health was is serious decline in real life. Bradley got all of Hartnall’s mannerisms during his final season especially his final episode down to a T! While nobody will ever be able to replace Hartnall, Bradley did a brilliant job of playing him not just in this episode but also the special episode for the 50th anniversary. With Bradley never actually meeting Hartnall and most of his episodes are missing I personally think he did a brilliant job of his portrayal of both the original actor and the character and was perfect for the casting. Bradley did a much better job then the other actor who stood in as the first Doctor during the five doctors. Edit: also it’s not shown in this clip but it did make people worried for the first Doctor when Bill started to creep up on him in the glass looking form.

I have to say I really loved the way, TUaT introduced the first Doctor to the modern Who Fans. Beside a few little flaws it was a lovely portrait of Hartnell's Doctor at the end of his lifetime. Hartnell's era was so different from what we know as DW today , but it's still always worth a watch, seeing how far the Doctor has evolved and came. It's a lovely tribute to 1 and 12 and him meeting is especially fitting considering all these connections/similarities between them. And I thought it also was a lovely look back at (the sadly incomplete) "The Tenth Planet" (still hoping TP Episode 4's going to be recovered).

Geheim Leise Making him a sexist is a minor flaw? Lol. (When nothing in classic Who, even if all the society before 2018 was evil and misogynistic, gave a hint of that sexism in the Doctor’s character)

Doctor Who today is completely sexist. Doctor Who in the 1960’s was far more egalitarian. It’s just 2015-17 Doctor Who is misandristic rather than misogynistic.

Serge Kent Yeah, though it also annoys me, because, as you say it's untrue to Classic Who and the First Doctor, those were only a few lines in an else stable and enjoyable portrait. It is a flaw, probably the biggest disappointment in the hole episode, but it's not such a big deal, as many say. Yeah, it's stupid, but it's a really minor part of the episode. A mistake, but nothing that destroys the episode nor even Bradley's portrait of the First Doctor. It would be way better without this flaw of course, but it does not ruin it for me in any way.

I think Bradley did a great job portraying the first Doctor considering the extremely sexist writing that was given to him. For me Moffatt's blunt, hit you over the head, approach to his plot point of "The 60's were very sexist!" was WAY overdone and continually annoying. Especially as this was the first Doctor at the END of his travels, not the beginning. If you watch his actual stories he'd mellowed quite a lot by "The Tenth Planet". Frankly if you want to experience Bradley performing in a much more accurate piece as the Doctor, listen to the ""First Doctor Adventures" Box-set from Big Finish. Not only do you get several more fun adventures with him as the Doctor, but you also get James Dreyfuss portraying the never before seen "First" incarnation of the Master too!

Yes, they exaggerated One’s 60s attitude a bit- but scenes like this are too good to pass up. I feel like this scene is really supposed to be Moffat’s defense of the First to fans who have tried to watch him and struggled- he has his faults, occasional sexism included, but deep down he is still the Doctor we all know and love, and is worth sifting through the baggage of the 60s.
@UnchainedEruption
@UnchainedEruption 6 жыл бұрын
What "baggage?" There is no baggage. The original Doctor Who is far superior. Moffat is doing the opposite of defending that era. He's lying about it and misleading people who have never seen it before into thinking it's sexist or something. It's not. Bradley does a very poor impersonation of William Hartnell; I don't know why people think he's good. Hartnell the actor was extremely talented, able to easily go back and forth between a loving grandfather figure to being in a furious rage the next, to having a spark of curiousity in some historical or scientific thing the next. Bradley has a very cold, monotone performance, by contrast. The stand-in's for Ben and Polly are even worse. No, the original Doctor Who, and by that I don't mean just the William Hartnell incarnation, but all 7 from the original show, are nothing like the modern Doctor. The modern Doctor is basically a God (which the show itself was even cognizant of in the episode titled "The God Complex," and he has quirky mannerisms to appeal to tween girls. The original Doctor was a father figure, someone you looked up to. He wasn't invincible, he wasn't indestructible, and he wasn't known or feared throughout the cosmos. He didn't fall in love with companions. In fact, there's a famous quote from producer JNT, the 80s equivalent of a showrunner today, "no hanky panky in the Tardis." Doctor Who is meant to be suitable for children, so no matter what, there can never be any hint of sexual tension, no innuendos, and certainly no romance.

I've always loves the Doctor's original theme from the earlier series. It always gave the Doctor a sense of mystery but also sadness. The sadness can apply to not just the how he ended of the time war resulting in being the last of the Time Lords but also to the loss he went through losing his companions and being on his own all the time.
