When it comes to pulling to the sides its generally the tierods going bad. Best test is to jack the car up and move the wheel from the 9 and 3 position. If it moves its tie rods.

@@ricky107_ not sure if modern seats are as comfy as of 1980s and 90s but are more safer. It's as old Mercedes benze's and Volvos cars of late 80's and early 90s were overengineered that its was almost impossible for them to break down further more are quieter and comfortable than modern cars. May be a function that only modern Mercedes S class can near.

Just 'inherited' my ex-wife's '92 240 brick. Actually it had been in the family for the 13 years we've been 'not' a couple, and I've done a lot of maintenance on it over that time; but now it's mine. It's low mileage (for a brick...150k or so. Speedometer was changed, but I have records), no rust, peeling clear coat, suspension is shot. The struts and shocks she had put on when it was originally rescued over ten years ago have all died, along with most of the rubber underneath. AC is not working, so it's going to need some work, but I'd like to make it a DD again. Not sure how much beyond that I want to do...maybe fix some minor front sheet metal collision damage. So...I'm off to Pull a Part for some pieces/parts. [Note: these things are disappearing from the the U-pull yards around here in Nashville. They were common on the lots when we got the car 10 years ago, so word to the wise: buy anything you think you might need when you see it. It may not be easily available when you do. Many parts are even disappearing from the online suppliers]

Creepy sound after shutoff may be a vacuum leak. Not sure of your 245 year, but there used to be a set of three or four spheres on the firewall that served as a vacuum tank and holds a vacuum after shutoff. These cars are tanks - and the engines are indestructible and easy to work on. It will be fun to watch you bring this one back to life!

To make it a bit better you should: With the risk of being completly obvious :) 1: Get the filters shifted. Maybe drain the tank. 2: New sparkplugs, leads and distributor. Check for air leaks in the hoses and and around the manifold. Check the exhaust for leaks forward from the lambda. Makes the engine run alot better. 3: If you want a bit more power you could change the camshaft to a "hotter" one. 4: Change the tires to a bit narrower and higher profile = quiet. Handling doesn't really suffer. 5: The rails on the front seats are probably full of crap and probably not fastened correctly or loose. You should not feel that you are sitting sideways in a 240. 6: Keep the handbrake in good working order at all times and use it always and "lightly". If not it will get stuck (weak point on the 240, 850, V70 and all Volvos with the 2 wire handbrake design) All is pretty straight forward and durable on the 240. If not driven in places where ther is snow and salt you will not have much problems with rust either.

I love that you've got a Volvo 240, but don't be so terrified of it. These are old, yes, but they are nice to drive when they're done up right. I drive one that is much older than yours (1983) and everything works on it. Yours has more power than mine, but it really isn't slow. It's not a fast car, but they are really good performers. The seats are very comfortable when they have good foam, seat springs, and working lumbar. Please fix this car up, it's an incredibly safe car that is super reliable and is a joy to drive when it's fixed up. Great video, thanks for posting!

My 89 240 had 3 out of 4 frozen calipers. That made mine pull funky directions. Front brakes are 4 pistons with dual circuits. Both back parking brakes had the lining falling off one shoe, also a dragger. And then one of the front wheel bearings was so bad it fell apart when I took off the hub. Flushing the trans fluid was easy by disconnecting the return line from the radiator. Don't forget to service the flame trap. It got faster with every repair, but still not quick. Enjoy!!

If the Volvo hasnt been driven or run since the battery was fitted it might be worth checking for a boot ( trunk ) or interior light stuck in the on position or more likely the head unit , being that the speakers are missing it would be very easy to not notice and leave it switched on . Over here in the UK they have a reputation of being an " old timers " car but i quite fancy one , rock solid built and safe for the family and its not entirely detrimental that they are so very tunable . ;)

If you want it to be cool for small money, just mill head, adjustable cam gear, vx3 camshaft bigger injectors, change suspension springs for heavy duty and buy gas shocka, also wider wheels with spacera +50 on all 4 wheels. You will get cool drivers car and engine about 150 hp with good torque and sound. I hope to see you guys do the work on this car. You can start with 2 screws holding the regulator and brushes on the alternator (assuming that you don’t have bearings on it and that the battery is good). That could be the problem...$20 for a regulator on eBay. You mentioned no down shift, first check adjustment and look to see if it is broken at the mount near the throttle body. It should be replaced every 6 to 10 years or 75,000 miles, which ever comes first. I hope that you keep the wagon all Volvo, they are getting rare. The old professor
