I've been using the LG c1 oled since August. So I have some experience in both glossy and matte. If you have your setup where a window is facing the monitor, don't even bother getting glossy unless you get blackout curtains. The reflections is insanely noticeable. But if your setup has curtains or isn't near a window.... it is definitely 100% worth getting over matte. I've noticed that if you have a room only lit by ceiling lights, the matte actually looks worse because it spreads the lightness throughout the monitor.

I would choose glossy every time. I currently have a glossy panel that is nothing special but it makes colors and darks so much more prominent. I refused to buy a new monitor for years because we only had a choice of matte screens. BTW, thank you for showcasing the fact that having a matte screen doesn't mean you don't have to worry about reflections. In fact, it sometimes makes them worse (dispersing them like you showed). It's all preference but it would be nice if we actually had a bit of a choice to make. I worry that if they start adding anti reflective glossy coatings like they do on televisions the price of monitors will go up drastically (they're already ridiculous).

I've had a glossy panel for 10 years, and the trick is to have a warm light source that that is at an angle where it won't be visible as a reflection on the glossy panel, but still able to uniformly shine its light across the entirety of the panel. For some reason it greatly increases vibrancy, contrast and gives you deeper blacks. Matte panels can't even compare, as long as you know how to set up your lighting conditions, which is why I'm waiting for some nice glossy options before upgrading. It's like comparing a high quality photograph, printed on glossy paper, to an aged, washed-out printout on plain paper.

eh, its been the opposite case with me. I would put on my curtains and get the room as dark as possible to game on my glossy monitor, and even then, even the slightest of light coming in would be enough to show my face on it during a dark scene. While the matt screen works well EVEN when I don't have my curtains on. And sure there is a difference in image quality but definitely nothing even close to how you describe it with High quality photograph against a washed-out printout. You're being biased

I think matte became the standard for monitors due to most office buildings having those horrible florescent lights causing tons of reflections and glares. Consumer monitors follow suit because keeping the same coating across product lines is easier/cheaper. For consumer monitors, I think having the option of either coating is key depending on a setup. My home setup is next to large windows with lots of light so matte makes sense there, but I'd snag glossy no questions asked if I had a darker space.

I have won a glossy BenQ LED TN LCD in a tournament back in 2006, and I thought it was the single biggest improvement to an LCD screens ever. Gone was the bland look, everything was more vibrant, CLEAR, much more like on my CRT. Still, it was 75Hz so I sold it. In January 2022 I went on to build a new PC and decided to finally buy myself LCD as the main screen (been using Mitsubishi SB2070 all those years)... but there were none in the shops? So I just bought 144Hz AOC 24G2U, as it was a reasonable price to check 144Hz, if I'm ok with IPS, pixel density and fps vs size and resolution. I will say side by side on the strongest overdrive it is close to 100Hz on my Mitsubishi, but it is not even a competition when CRT is running on 120Hz or more (this one can go 160Hz depending on the resolution). Anyway glossy 240Hz 27 1440 IPS is probably what I would like next.

Now using my LG CX Oled and a normal monitor depending on which gaming rig I’m using is fine to use either way. My computer is connected to a LG CX (glossy) and my MacBook Pro has glossy display as well. For the CX in particular, which is a really nice OLED display,. it is far too glossy for daytime watching dark content in my living room. Just too much light reflections, especially from sun lit areas. Superior at evening though. For MBP, you do notice some reflections, but generally the screen is brighter + more of my work content is lighter, less reflections are shown.
@liamness
@liamness 2 жыл бұрын
The anti-reflective coating on the LG CX is pretty impressive, seems to deal well with any reflections up to a certain brightness. Regardless, yes, you definitely need to draw the curtains for daytime viewing of any content on the darker side. I have an LCD Gigabyte M28U monitor on my desk, with a massive window right behind, and it's fine for daytime use by comparison. But I'm open to the idea of a glossy monitor still, as long as it has a good level of brightness (not just a 5% window, or in HDR mode) and a good anti-reflective coating. One consideration about the anti reflective coating is that it does result in a display which needs to be treated with care. Monitors used in a work setting see a lot of abuse, you don't really want to have to follow special instructions to clean the screen.

@@liamness For me personally brightness was never an issue. I have a U2515H with semi-matte coating that I'm using at ~115 nits with a south facing window at a 90° angle. It's a bit dim when using dark mode applications in full sunshine but I don't like when it's too bright at night. The default 50% brightness comes out to around 200-220 nits which was eye-searingly bright. The C1 had a peak of 166 nits according to Hardware Unboxed and I would consider that very much usable for my situation but possibly a bit too dim for the average user. Above 200 nits just hurts my eyes and I don't understand why reviewers see 300+ as the minimum acceptable spec. Maybe because they're working in large studios under bright neon lights but that's just not representative of a consumer setup.

I'm glad youtubers are finally talking about glossy. I have been complaining about no glossy options for YEARS. To me the diffusion and larger reflections that are a result are more distracting and annoying than the direct reflections of glossy. With that and the vastly superior image I'd take glossy for sure. The best glossy is the kind that exists on high end tvs like the new LG oleds for example. They do a very good job of minimizing reflection intensity while being glossy.

For now I have completely transferred back to matte coatings for both my laptop and desktop, but if you are able to control the lighting perfectly with like a desk setup I don't see why not for going for a glossy coating for all the benefits it provides.

I have had a good matte 27'' 1440p display next to a 27'' iMac and the difference in picture quality couldn't be more dramatic. Fonts look crisp and sharp like razors on the iMac, while looking like a blurry mess on the matte screen. I will never use another non-glossy display again. Reflections on a controlled environment like a room are a non-issue. The lack of PC alternatives to the iMac's glossy panel is one of the main reasons I prefer to play on Bootcamp than on a dedicated Windows PC. Visual quality, colour accuracy and sharpness are just too important for me. I'm happy to see that may change in a few years, when time comes to upgrade. Though I doubt we will get glass on Windows PC displays anytime soon, which is the second part of the equation that makes iMacs look so good.

I even had the LG OLED C1 on my desk for couple of weeks but being used to a 5K iMac, the pixel density was just not enough for me. So I found a 5K iMac with intact screen and broken motherboard, found a display port driver board on AliExpress and now my main gaming display is a 5K iMac screen. I can't understand how some of you can stand the look of matte screens. It looks absolutely horrible to me, to the point I won't even use a matte screen. I mean, if I was stuck in an office environment or something and it was just being used for a utilitarian purpose, sure. But for entertainment? Hell no. I've modded every gaming monitor I've ever bought to give them glossy screens and it has been a massive improvement in each case. Luckily, most of my TVs over the years--CRTs, plasmas, high-end LCDs and OLEDs--have all had glossy screens.

@Koustuv Kanungo Exactly. That's why I find this argument very weak. When there is a strong reflection on the screen it is strongly present on both types of screen. It is merely smeared over a larger area on a matte screen. (You can see an example of this in the video). It looks bad in either case. The only solution is to adjust your monitor position and/or control the lighting conditions. That's all there is to it. Matte screens are not a solution.

Sometimes in certain lighting scenarios, glossy works so much better for reflection control. I worked at an office with overhead lights once that even though the lights weren't reflecting in the panel directly, you could see large, soft blooms of light in across the panel from these overhead lamps because of how much the matte coating blurs and makes the reflections larger. If I was using a glossy screen in this situation, there would just plain be no visible reflections from those lights at all -- which would have been visually preferrable.
@KindOldRaven
@KindOldRaven 2 жыл бұрын
It's simple: glossy coatings make for a better picture than a matte coating. Always. But... you can't enjoy that better picture if you're in a room where reflections are a bother. And if your screen truly is fully glossy, that's... well almost all the time. Even the 'glossy' and very reflective OLED TVs and such have anti-glare filters and while appearing glossy, actually do minimize reflections a lot more than if it were 'just' a glass panel for instance. Still, if you compare two screens (hard to do these days) that are identical, but one has the matte coating removed (you could do this on older panels) the one with the matte-layer removed will always look better in a dark room for instance. No contest. Many gamers who have a game-den or use a home office-room for gaming too do so in the evening or dim the lights. Then such a glossy monitor could make a lot of sense. TL;DR Matte coatings or solutions affect light diffusion, even in a dark room, and will agressively diminish contrast when light from the outside hits the screen - as a trade off for negating horrible reflections. So there's a place for matte, glossy and in-between solutions.

"Back in 2008" I bought a Dell glossy monitor and I hated it until I changed it (found the 2nd big thing against it: latency). My monitor is perpendicular to my window, and the room is "lit" by it behind me and I always had my contour visible in the screen. If something black was displayed, it would turn as a darker mirror. In short: if you want/have ANY LIGHT in your room (natural or otherwise), DON'T BUY GLOSSY. You will just try to justify your purchase with dumb reasons afterwards. If you really want the extra "quality" from glossy, you need a theater room where you can only watch the screen (I would even say no RGB keyboards). Otherwise you will just raise your brightness and defeat any advantage of glossy (i.e.:better contrast).

What's interesting here is that both coatings have anti-glare properties. On the matte it's much much more aggressively dispersed, but there is a coating on the glossy surface to attempt to reduce reflective light. On the LG C1 this coating does a decent job at removing reflections but it's not like the anti-glare on say an iPad Pro or Macbook. Apple having decades of experience dealing with glossy screens they've become very adept at utilizing their technologies for this. The Eve Spectrum coating seems to do a decent job however, but it's still very reflective. Overall for color accuracy and true punch the glossy wins out every time, but if you mainly game and sit in brightly lit rooms instead of say a more dimly lit office area matte can be a good choice. For me with the C1, glossy just underlines the OLED capabilities so well and there's no turning back for me.

I wouldn't say it's the first of it's kind. I had a glossy 144hz, 2560x1600 Yamasaki monitor about 8 years ago . It was a random Korean brand you could only get off eBay and made with reject panels from some big manufacturers. Despite the poor color accuracy (10bit and poorly calibrated) and backlight bleed it looked amazing in the dark.
Matte vs. glossy OLED - was I wrong?
