When I was a kid growing up in the 1960’s I remember those buses on the highways. Those were the best looking buses Greyhound has ever had.

My Brother and I used to ride one of these beautiful buses when we were youngster's. Dad used to put us on the Tarzana Greyhound to Thousand oaks Ca. to visit our mother who lived there. Our father and stepmom lived in Lake view terrace around 1964. My Bro and I are now in our early 60s

My great-grandfather drove one of these and toured it when it first came out with the white walls on it my grandfather was there in Harrisburg when he brought it in for the first time and he couldn't believe his dad was driving it his name was Fred R Kellner Sr

From information posted on the BusTalk forum... The GX-2 was built by GM in 1948 as the prototype for the Scenicruiser. After some modifications this coach went into service with Great Lakes Greyhound until 1957. In 1958 it was sold to the Ralph Marterie Orchestra for use as a tour bus, then sold to the Blue Ridge Quartet. It ended up in a scrap yard in Nashville where it was presumed to be scrapped.

Nice footage of one of the "granddaddys" of the famous Greyhound GM Scenicruiser. I too recommend the book "Scenicrusing," by Paul von Fange, if you're interested in a well written, detailed history of Greyhound's GM PD-4501, "Scenicruser," intercity buses.

Does it have any record of the drivers in it or any mention of Harrisburg PA my great-grandfather was a driver
@WAL_DC-6B8 ай бұрын
@@mikesmotorsportsgamingrevi4814The book is mostly about the development, building, mechanics and operation of the PD-4501 while it was in operation with Greyhound and subsequent operators. No mention of Harrisburg in the index nor a list of drivers.

@@WAL_DC-6B from what I understand he was a very decorated driver even had a ring that they gave to him for commendation and was one of the first people to show off one of these buses he toured the country with it

I've read that in addition to the four speed standard trans that this had what the actual S'cruiser and the Trailways 4104s at the end of that series's era (1958-1960) had---two speed rear end, just like many other vehiches, but eventually this prototype didn't go through (and of course was the Scenics and except for those Trailways PD 4104s I cite had were just the same four speeds that the Suburban FIshbowls had. :))

Good questions! No one has proof today, but the stories are that GX-1 was cut up and scrapped (?) during the mid-50s in Chicago and that GX-2 ended up in a junkyard in Tennessee.

Tom McNaley (spelling) owns this bus now. It was modified and issue from GM with serial number PD4501-1001 making the full scenic production run total out at 1001 buses made.

Actually, the 1001 coach Tom owns was the first Scenicruiser built after GX-2 and it was known as EXP-331. It was the pilot vehicle, built in 1953 as a proof-of-concept before Scenicruiser #001 came off the production line in July, 1954. See my book Scenicruising for all the details: www.scenicruising.com

LtPiper, Unfortunately I do not own the GX-2. Like Paul said, the story says this (original prototype No. 1 of 2) was scrapped in a Tennessee junkyard. The bus I own is PD4501-1001, which started life as the second prototype or as it was known EXP-331. Take care, Tom McNally

The top portion profile reminds me of a 1957 Chevrolet Nomad Station Wagon. Here are some pictures of them: www.google.com/search?q=1957+chevrolet+nomad+station+wagon&rlz=1C1TSND_enUS431US431&espv=210&es_sm=122&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=7gQMU4WVHcPO2wXPyoHwAQ&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAg&biw=1366&bih=639
