It was the very first MMORPG--even created the term--and it's still online
In 1989, Brad Lineberger would partner up with James Hettinger, the founder of a brand new company called Tantalus / MPG-Net, and they would release Kingdom of Drakkar--a "graphical MUD."
This game would change hands several times, surviving from the days when you would pay $5 an hour to play all the way through the free-to-play revolution, and it's still online today.

My dad, was one of the original player of this game, went by Ender, and got me into it in middle school (~2003). We spent so many hours on this and loved it! He was first in the game to kill several bosses, got "eaten" by the bosses and lost a lot of stats. I was a Barbarian tank and there was feature that increased HP and damage delt called berserk. It made my barb insane with rage and caused me to sometimes step on the deathpile and not having control picked up the special gear dropped (which permanently tied ot to me) and breake it....good times.

This game is tough now because the original players really had to grind and figure out all of these boss fights and new dungeons, while suffering consequences of death! You have to recover your gear from the boss lair and some bosses take stat points on death. Players built databases on websites with guides to all of the areas, weapons, quests, bosses and more but a lot of those pages servers did not last. The lingering players I'm sure are very helpful still though and some of the guides may still be up, and the game tuned down a bit. Also most of the mid and endgame bosses require a group/ your guild in order to defeat them. If you decide to play you'll have up ask some of the big old timers in the chat lobby to help you out.

This was my first online game I ever played. I was 6 and my brother was playing and I begged my dad to let me play. I promised I wouldn't talk to anyone. He finally relented and I hopped into the game and what is the first thing I did? I rolled up into the tavern and said "Hi everyone I'm AnarchoYeasty and I'm 6!" -_- this game brings back memories

I played these so much in the 80s in university. And when I went to bed I would fantasize about what it would be like if the game had graphics. Inevitably, I would conclude it would never be possible. Then came World of Warcraft....

The first game that shown was text was Zork, but while you talked about Zork, that was Angband. Drakkar was my first MMO game I played online. I watched a friend who went by Belg in "Classic" play when we had just graduated high school. I was hooked and would work towards getting a ibm-pc that could access these online games. I started playing Drakkar when MPGN restarted Drakkar on a monthly sub vs the hourly of Classic. This game would never have a huge player base because it would not resonate with all of the soft players of today. It took YEARS to finish quests, which required lots of players doing steps of the quests for months at a time. When you died to big npcs or bosses you risked losing stats and experience. They would add holiday bosses/events that would require multiple guilds to band together to defeat and even then it was almost impossible because as the bosses killed more players, they gained experience as well and leveled up. Sometimes to the point where they could pick up players gear, "untie" it and use it themselves making them unbeatable. It was so fulfilling beating things in this game, completing goals, etc. Now the games out there its rare to see one require more than a few hours for you to achieve anything notable. The risk vs reward in this game is very skewed and brought a different satisfaction most people will never know. I stopped playing before Cobrahn (Classic) was reintroduced, pulled away by a new game at the time called Everquest. Later came back to Drakkar with some friends and we hit max level with just 3 of us playing multiple characters. We quit when Nameless came out. Just didnt feel the same. Plus it was like $50 a month with all the nickel and diming done per account. Wonder if my account is still there. I remember having "Reggies" that didnt glow. They were pretty much collectors items even then. I am still friends with fellow players Belg, Armageddon and Lothorn from 35 years ago. So many good memories! Thanks for the video!

Yep ...I played original game was it was on dial up modem and cost 2 dollars an hour to play. The real fear you got playing this game can't be understated. When you died ...everything you had on you dropped to the floor. So if you died in an area with your best gear ....getting it back was a problem. And the game would reset every day ....anything on the ground goes poof. Great stuff.

Of all the "history" pieces i've read on my life long labor of love, this was the most accurate. Some of your details are "spooky" accurate in fact. A couple of the dates I had to actually remember :). Thanks for the trip down memory lane! (One small bit of trivia, i bought it back from iEN after the collapse of the advertising market (Where you could incent ads with in game prizes), and they just didn't know what to do with the product.

People saying about all your items being dropped on the floor acting like no other game ever did it
@damastashonuff640
@damastashonuff640 4 ай бұрын
The difference was some of these items took years to get. To top it off, some items didnt "tie"/attune to your account so if someone happened upon them, they could take them. When the monsters killed you, some "ate" you and took a % of your total experience and could themselves level up, making them harder to kill, sometimes gaining new abilities as well. They could even pick up, untie your gear and use it if they got big enough. Imagine a boss that already is hard enough for 12 people to defeat, killing a few of you and then picking up one of your shields that was the best blocker in the game.

Played it for years. Epic gem. They have dramatically increased the speed of play, level and skill wise these days. It used to be a very intense grind game. It's a good world to explore great lore and dragons and other bosses to defeat. A beginners challenge would be to kill the Gryphon and obtain his Gryphon Longsword. Next would be up slay a Red Dragon and tan his scales into an armor.
