I feel that first 'breaking the game' actually really added to the level. It drags the first part of the 'final route' into the second act rather than the third. It gives you a false idea of what to work towards while thinking you're being smart and you actually broke the game. The second one feels a little sloppy and might have needed a little work either hiding it or requiring another knowledge checkpoint to actually get through this route

I think they just needed to make it three times instead of two, to prevent accidental discovery. People might mistakenly go back through a door twice, but three times without dying is very unlikely without the knowledge checkpoint.

There are two lessons to be learned from this level: 1. Make sure your knowledge checkpoints can't/wouldn't be accessed early, either by accident or through people doing a 200IQ solution to some puzzle. 2. The more opportunities for someone to access a knowledge checkpoint early, the more likely it is to happen.

Dying between checkpoints is actually a really clever cheese strat to check for safety keys in red coin levels, and it only just occurred to me why. If you make a red coin troll level, and you want to put trolls after the key door (especially multiple trolls the player shouldn't feel bad for not being able to dodge), you want to make it so a safety key appears when respawning at the checkpoint after the keydeath. But since you can't really check for where the player died, the only way to know if they keydeathed is to see if all the red coins are back when they respawn (probably via entity limit). In order to prevent this from going off early, you just have to make sure the player can't respawn at the key door checkpoint before saving a key coin. This level, and many others, do that by making the player attempt red coin rooms from the other checkpoint, and not putting any hazards in between the two, the idea being that that checkpoint is just used to reset the other one, and you wouldn't even respawn next to the key door except after a keydeath. However, the forced timer means this is always possible to circumvent by timing out, if not by other clever means of intentional death; it's just hard to do this by accident, as Carl managed. From the perspective of the level designer, the best way to avoid this happening at all is to force a red coin at the beginning before the checkpoint is reached. That means even if you intentionally die, you can't activate the safety key early because you always have at least one coin saved (except after keydeath). I've seen a few levels do this, but never understood why; now I know.

Left this comment before realizing (spoilers if you haven't finished the video yet) this level REQUIRES you to abuse the safety key as a twist, in order to get the final knowledge checkpoints, and it is not in fact entity limit checked at all. The "you should theoretically never die at the key door checkpoint" is intentionally used to prevent most players getting the safety key any old time, and the fish is used as a secret way to kill yourself and get it early. In order to figure this out the player will need to play through the entire level at LEAST twice, which of course means the safety key isn't a safety key at all. Kinda genius in a twisted way, and might have actually interacted with Carl's accidental cheese in an interesting way since he could have seen the full hint at the start (provided he had any clue what he was looking at, which of course he did not).
