I just read ‘Fanny’s Journey’ (‘Le Voyage de Fanny’ ) it’s a remarkable account of survival and salvation in that Fanny, aged 13 takes responsibility for a growing group of Jewish children and leads them to safety in Switzerland. She had previously spent 3 years at Chaumont where she was given extra tuition in poetry and literature by her ‘surveillante’ I think, house mother would be the best translation for this lovely woman. She recognised that Fanny was a specially gifted child and encouraged her to nurture her talents. She made sure the children could safely forage, read maps and get direction from reading the night sky. These survival skills proved vital to the survival of Fanny’s group later. Full marks to Chaumont!

Yes, it's a proper thing, Well done, the first door, the first rafters and the first waterproof room. The attic was a brute of a job, not many could have pulled off all that lugging and carrying and the maths, never mind hanging off the rafters to weather proof the roof. Super Dan! 😎

Suggestion: Lap the doors where they meet. Since you have to trim them a bit anyway, use the router to take the full overhang of half of the depth on opposite sides (inside and outside). Then the rain won’t get through any gap, and you can increase the amount taken off if you get swelling in more humid weather, and not end up with a gap when they shrink again as life becomes less humid again.

Yeah, seems like only one quarter to one third of the roof is up, then the windows and doors then.. the big and hard stuff... the place needs proper flooring, water, electricity, and plumbing. I am rooting for him but he has years left to go. And one more thing the place doesn't have a public sewer system, and there are things you can do as far as that goes but you need someone who knows what they are doing. It not a one man job and it's not just digging a hole putting some gravel in covering it up and laying out pipes from the building to it and covering it up with dirt. Modern septic systems are complicated high tech and not do it yourself stuff. I am sure with a little help he will manage though. help

I have been following this ruin rebuild since the beginning having seen Dan on LaLande with Stephanie. What an amazing journey this has been and no doubt a million eyes on the project is not far in the future. Thank you for the educational and entertaining channel. Ps. 8:5 says about the creation of man and prophetically about Jesus: "You made him a little lower than godlike ones, (angels who are powerful), and you crowned him with glory and splendor." (See also Hebrews 2:7,9). In our imperfect, fallen state, we have some idea of the abilities our Creator gave us. It is beautiful to see them displayed in the masterful work Dan is accomplishing.

Just needs a 2 degree taper on the mating edges and then you can probably close them. Add a stop to one door and a latch into the ceiling on the other and you can use one door most of time time and it will stop against the stationary one.

If they are too snug a fit now, you might need to take into account the expansion of the doors as the weather warms up.

As the doors,are there to keep the weather out, won't they swell in the rain? Interior and exterior joinery have different moisture contents. So some kind of oil treatment to stop the moisture content jumping around too much?

It's really satisfied g to build with mortise and tenons, dados, pegs in the old methods. One of my last large projects....timber truss for overhanging eave, and two antique screendoors for French doors. Turned out so nice, wanted to keep them! For a beginning woodworker Dan ....... super good work!

Seeing as they are in the attic, I would leave them there. Give them a bit of a sand and slap on some Osmo (Billy Petherick swears by it) and you have a lovely pair of protected doors.
